Happy St. Patrick's Day! What better way to celebrate than to highlight one of Ireland's native breeds, the Kerry Blue Terrier? 🍀

According to the AKC, the breed is thought to have developed after a shipwreck. After the Spanish Armada suffered an upset in 1588, a lone canine survivor (likely of Spanish Water Dog ancestry) found himself on the Irish coast without human companions. Impressed by his survival, Irishmen took him in, eventually breeding him with their Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers.

Today, the Kerry Blue Terrier is relatively rare: if you have one of these hardworking, iconic dogs, consider yourself lucky! 💚

Yesterday evening, Messi attended the 96th Academy Awards. The last dog to attend an Oscars ceremony was Uggie the Jack Russell Terrier in 2012—we could get used to seeing more canines on the red carpet!

Terriers' small bodies are ideal for tunneling into burrows. Per the Oxford Dictionary, "terrier" comes from the French "chiens terrier," meaning "digging dog." "Terrier" is also thought to stem from the Latin "terra," meaning earth.

Many puppy mills function legally in accordance with USDA regulations, where dogs are seen as livestock. 🐾Today, we're putting ourselves into one of those dog’s living spaces. Per baseline USDA commercial breeding regulations, dogs are allowed to spend the majority of their lives in a “primary enclosure” just six inches longer than their bodies. Cage size does not increase when a mother whelps a litter: her pups stay in that same space with her. Wire flooring and cage stacking are also allowed in these facilities. This is only one important facet of why you should avoid puppy mills. If you’re looking for a breeder, watch out for these 5 red flags! 🚩

Many puppy mills are operating in plain sight. If you can buy the dog without conversing directly with its breeder, that’s a big ol’ red flag. 🚩 Never buy dogs in pet stores: the requirements of a “USDA licensed breeder” leave much to be desired, and ethical breeders will want to be sure you’re a good fit for one of their pups. 🐾 #adoptorshopresponsibly

Many commerical breeding facilities hide under the guise of being a “family farm.” These facilities are USDA licensed, which gives the appearance of federal sanctioning, but USDA certifications leave a lot to be desired. The dogs in these facilities are essentially treated as livestock. Be sure to do your research when selecting a breeder!
