My hair is a hot mess I’m still in pajamas, clearly no makeup but I wanted to share this because this was a BIG moment in our house.
This is our big male leachie Zatt. We’ve had him for a few months now and he’s been territorial . I haven’t been able to handle him at all. Generally if I get close (even through the glass) he launches at me and bites. He’s evasive and angry.
There has never been an animal in my house I don’t handle at least from time to time until Zatt. I was not ready to accept defeat. On a regular basis I began trying to touch him. He hated it... Over and over again I’d extend my hand and he would try his best to attack it.
The final straw came last night when he demolished his cage. The back wall came down, he got wedged behind it. Something had to give. I attempted to pick him out. I couldn’t see another option to fixing his home without removing or fixing his wall. As expected. He bite me. I still hadn’t had enough. I needed him to be comfortable and safe. I tried again. He bit me again.
We took the night to calm down and make a plan. First thing in the morning I went to him ready for another good bite. I touched his back like I always do. It was time. I was ready to pick him up. I extended my hand, slipped my fingers under his belly. This time he let go of the wall. I was holding him. He was sweet and gentle and I could not believe it took us this long to get here.
Animals were wild first.
They have instincts for survival and that’s what they know. This has been my longest bonding experience in the animal world to date and it was SO worth it. Taking the time to show trust and respect to animals pays off and builds healthy relationships. Could I have pulled him out on day one? Yes but I would have gotten bitten. I would have shown Zatt that he lives in my world and the fight response would have become a regular thing for us.
Grow with you animals. Show them love. Show them safety. Earn your trust and never give up.
