Talking about the Longshots - by Steve Haskin

" With that said, the horse who ranks way at the top of that list is SOLE VOLANTE, who was ranked in the top six 16 times, and as high as No. 2 six times. I am not crazy about his lack of racing and not having run a meaningful race since June 10, but here is what I wrote about him on Feb. 11 when he made his debut at No. 2:

“The reason he debuts so high on the rankings is because this is what a Derby horse is supposed to look like. He has a devastating closing kick on dirt and grass, in the Sam F. Davis Stakes he blew right on by an undefeated dual stakes winner and one of the leading Derby contenders and won going away with his ears pricked, with a gap of 11 1/4 lengths to Remsen runner-up Ajaaweed in third. To show what a spectacular move he made, he ran his third quarter in an eye-catching :23.26, according to Trakus, making up 13 lengths, then just kept going, coming home the final sixteenth in :06 flat. What makes his story so great is that you had to go through 3,493 yearlings at the Keeneland September sale to get him for a paltry $6,000. He was pinhooked at the OBS April 2-year-old sale and went for only $20,000 to Biancone.”

He has run back-to-back 108 Brisnet late pace figures, which at the time was the fastest late pace figure by a 3-year-old, and I trust Patrick Biancone to put a lot of bottom in him with those two-minute licks on grass, his pair of mile works on grass, and a blazing five-furlong work in :57 4/5, also on grass. I feel he will appreciate going back to the dirt and Churchill Downs dirt has always been conducive to grass horses. Of all the closers, he has the quickest turn of foot and can get into the race in a flash, and I know he will relish every inch of the mile and a quarter."

This column marks the end of the wildest, wackiest, and most perplexing Triple Crown trail ever. Hopefully, next year we will return to a sense of normality. I

Sole Volante blazes 5 furlongs on turf in :57.80 in final Derby tuneup - Horse Racing Nation

Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and Andie Biancone’s Sole Volante turned in a sharp five-furlong workout on turf Friday morning at Palm Meadows Training Facility in preparation for a scheduled start in the Sept. 5 Kentucky Derby (G1).

The Patrick Biancone-trained son of Karakontie, who was ridden by jockey Luca Panici, was timed in 57.80 seconds, the fastest of four recorded at the distance on turf at Gulfstream Park’s satellite training facility in Palm Beach County.

“He worked really well. We did a shorter work today to get a little speed into him,” said the trainer’s daughter and assistant Andie Biancone. “He worked very well and came back great.”

Sole Volante is scheduled to ship to Churchill Downs Saturday at 6 p.m.

Sole Volante captured the Pulpit Stakes, in which he defeated Tampa Bay Derby (G2) winner King Guillermo on turf, and finished third in the Mucho Macho Man during Gulfstream’s Championship Meet. He went on to win the Sam F. Davis (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs and finish second behind King Guillermo in the Tampa Bay Derby. He won a stakes-quality handicap at Gulfstream June 10 before sustaining his first out-of-the-money finish in the Belmont Stakes (G1).

Panici, who has worked closely with the Biancones in the development of Sole Volante, will ride in his first Kentucky Derby Saturday.

“I’m excited to be there. I’m thankful to the connections for giving me this opportunity with a good horse. I’m very, very happy to be a part of this team,” Panici said. “I’m very, very proud and proud of the people who work with me.”

The son of a jockey, Panici grew up playing soccer with Frankie Dettori across the street from the racetrack in Milan, Italy, Dettori, four years his senior, inspired Panici with his immediate success as a jockey at the age of 16, as well as the subsequent fame and fortune he earned in England and across the world. Panici went on to enjoy success while riding more than 500 winners in Italy, but racing in the U.S. first caught his attention in 1996, when he spent a winter in South Florida galloping for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott for free in exchange for one mount (fifth-place finisher Yokama in a Feb. 19, 1996 allowance at Gulfstream).

Panici, who returned to South Florida the following winter to gallop from trainer Gary Sciacca, moved permanently to the U.S. in 2009. He has won nearly 700 races in the U.S., none more important than Sole Volante’s Sam F. Davis score that put him on the Triple Crown trail.

“When you work with a baby, you think always maybe they can take you to the Derby,” said the 46-year-old Panici, who will travel to Louisville following Sunday’s Gulfstream program. “Finally, this is the time.”

Sole Volante breezes on turf at Palm Meadows, will train up to Kentucky Derby

Sole Volante breezed five furlongs over the turf in 1:02 on Friday morning at Palm Meadows, his first work since a disappointing sixth-place finish in the Belmont Stakes.
son of Karakontie up to the Kentucky Derby on Sept. 5.

“Patrick said he was really happy with the way he worked coming back this morning,” said Dean Reeves, the principal owner of Sole Volante along with Biancone’s daughter Andie. “He said he was blowing a little bit, but not much for his first work. It was something to get him started and now we’re ready to move forward. He just wasn’t ready to push to make the race at Ellis.”

Reeves says Biancone plans to do all his work with Sole Volante at Palm Meadows before likely shipping to Churchill Downs about a week before the Derby.

“He has the turf course at Palm Meadows and that’s what he’s most comfortable training him over,” Reeves said.

SOLE VOLANTE dons his new swag and looks forward to exciting news ahead!

BOSTON, MA – June 19, 2020 – Sentient Jet, a Directional Aviation company, pioneer in private aviation, and passionate supporter of the thoroughbred racing community, is furthering its commitment to the sport of kings and anyone excited by the thunder of hooves around a race track through its partnership with American Thoroughbred racehorse Sole Volante for the 152nd running of the Belmont Stakes.

Traditionally the last leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes is going first this year and is scheduled for this Saturday, June 20, 2020, at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. This year’s Belmont Stakes will also have a different feel to it as it will be free of spectators and even horse owners, in keeping with health and safety guidelines in New York designed to inhibit the spread of COVID-19.

Regardless, Sole Volante is set to shine at the race. The 3-year-old thoroughbred – whose Italian name translates as “Flying Sun,” and reflects the illuminating travel experience guests can anticipate on Sentient Jet – is majority-owned by Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, headed by Dean and Patti Reeves, and will be ridden by Jockey Luca Panici. Sole Volante was purchased for $20,000, an unheard of price for a Triple Crown contender, and its participation in this race shows how far the thoroughbred has come.

Whatever its win, place or showing in the Belmont Stakes, Sole Volante is well-positioned to bring great visibility to Sentient Jet’s new Be Ready campaign launched in late May in response to the new ways people are traveling amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, including avoiding crowded locations, high-touch TSA checkpoints, and commercial aircraft. Indeed, Sentient Jet is helping longtime clients Dean and Patti Reeves “be ready” to travel to the remaining legs of the Triple Crown – the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes – later this year, providing a private aviation solution to get them there against a backdrop of important standards for health and safety. For this particular race though, the Reeves will be hosting a watch party on Saturday in Suwanee, Georgia.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and to join our clients Dean and Patti Reeves in cheering on Sole Volante in this year’s running of the Belmont Stakes,” said Andrew Collins, President and CEO of Sentient Jet, which is a full sponsor of the thoroughbred. “This horse brings a consistent record across six career outings into the first leg of the Triple Crown, and with the backing of all of us at Sentient Jet, it has a lot of enthusiasm behind it.”

Dean and Patti Reeves added, “This year’s Belmont Stakes is a singular race in a singular time for our country and the world. But like the champion we believe Sole Volante to be, you can’t keep a good horse down. While we won’t be trackside at Belmont Park, the cheering is going to get pretty loud come post time in Atlanta!”

Sole Volante Worst To First in Salty Gulfstream Allowance

Sent off as the 12-5 second choice to his slightly more accomplished stable companion Ete Indien (Summer Front), Sole Volante (Karakontie {Jpn}) was dropped out the back early by Luca Panici, but came with a flying finish in the final furlong to defeat longshot Jesus’ Team (Tapiture) by 3/4 of a length in what could be a prep for the GI Belmont S. in New York in 10 days’ time.

“If he’s really well, we may go to Belmont,” trainer Patrick Biancone said following the victory. “If he’s tired, we’ll wait for the [July 11 GII Toyota] Blue Grass.”

It's not often that once received, a birthday present continues to keep on giving. But that is exactly what happened Feb. 8 at Tampa Bay Downs when 3-year-old Sole Volante sailed beneath the wire to win the $200,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3).

"I bought the horse for (my daughter's) birthday last year when she turned 22," said trainer Patrick Biancone, whose daughter Andie Biancone now owns Sole Volante in partnership with Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and Limelight Stables Corp. "I told her when I saw him, 'If he brings less than $22,000, I'll buy it,' so I bought it for her."

With the schedules for the 2020 Triple Crown and other major stakes for 3-year-olds finally firming up, Patrick Biancone is stepping up training for Sole Volante and Ete Indien at Palm Meadows Training Center, Gulfstream Park's satellite facility in South Florida.

"I gave them an easy time in April. They should be perfectly ready and fresh and happy for the second part of the year," said Biancone, who backed off on the training of his graded stakes-winning 3-year-olds due to the disruption of racing at most tracks amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
