When working with a reactive dog we often see owners interrupt, correct, or redirect after the dog is already reacting. By interrupting earlier we give our dog a better chance to be successful. Typically you’ll notice their ears perk up in the direction of the trigger, then other body signals start happening (hackles raised, tail up and high, weight shifts, mouth ajar, etc) THEN vocalization occurs Interrupt your dog the moment those ears perk up, interrupt the moment they are fixating -don’t wait for the bark and the lunging The fixation is like leaving a boiling pot of water on the stove and the reaction is the water boiling over Allowing your prey driven dog to fixate on something and reinforcing this can often lead to frustration which then builds in to reactivity or leash reactivity. Paying attention to your dog’s on your walk will go a long way in being able to see the signs early and prevent any behavioral issues to arise.
Orange County Transportation Association hosted their wonderful service dog training day. Its a training opportunity that can not be easily replicated and is very necessary for a lot of these dog’s journeys in becoming well rounded service dogs and guide dogs. It gives them an opportunity to be properly socialized with public transportation, get them used to different surfaces, sounds, vibrations, spaces, etc and continue building their confidence in environments like this. Hanging out in front of a store is just as beneficial as going inside the store. If your dog is not confident at the entrance of the store, and isn’t confident with the sliding doors, the noises of the carts, the different people, etc don’t move on yet. Work outside before entering, get them to a place of security and positive association before accidentally flooding them by working past threshold going inside too fast. Please make note that any non service animals or guide dogs should not be entering in to non pet friendly stores. Seriously, it affects these teams way more than you may even realize and it’s not worth it. It’s not appropriate. As trainers we want our clients to be successful for themselves and for the dog’s success. We ensure we adjust to their learning styles, we are patient, have reasonable expectations, and are understanding.
We came across a very disappointing video posted by a dog trainer who has a large platform on tik tok. Due to this “trainer” having such a large audience we worry that someone who is on the fence or has been looking for a trainer may see something like this and be deterred from starting formal training. We want to ensure people that not all trainers are like this.
Difficult clients, clients who are frustrated, or those who aren’t natural handlers should NEVER be belittled. Even clients who do the exact opposite of what you recommend. There is a time and a place to have appropriate conversations, handle it professionally, get your client on a path that has the dog’s best interest as priority.
Helping your clients understand a concept or technique is the reason your dog training is successful. Trainers need to start adjusting to the clients needs that will help the dog be successful. We pride ourselves in how we prioritize our humans just as much as much as the dogs. We ensure we adjust to the human’s learning styles & have reasonable expectations for our clients.
If your client isn’t successful the dog won’t be and dog trainers don’t just train dogs they 100% train the humans and being empathetic, patient, & kind is not that hard.

The two girlies working on being out and about in a new environment. They had lots of dogs pass by, some barking, some overly excited, some super calm and all different sizes. There was a ton of people some running, walking, talking on the phone, different genders and heights, hats and no hats, some people wearing hoodies and some playing the guitar. Plus all the different smells, sounds, & surfaces.
Saisho got spooked from a doggie poop bag that was flowing in the wind attached to the poop bag dispenser at the harbor. So we took it slow allowed her to sniff, made sure there was exposure and when she successfully approached it she got a treat and love to associate all of this with something positive and she was fine with that object with no issues afterwards.
Gotta love working with puppies😍
