Pidgie love
It has been a tough week for intakes with injuries, predator attacks, starvation and illnesses. But even in sad moments there is still much joy to be found. Barbossa, the one footed pigeon found on death’s door, has made a full recovery and has found love! For the longest time he just kept to himself and didn’t interact much with my home flock but my sweet girl Moon, finally won him over and they haven’t stopped hooting, dancing and snuggling each other since I placed her in his bachelor pad. I am hoping this will encourage him to venture out more! Congratulations love birds 🍾🥂♥️
Nugget is coming along beautifully!! It is extremely important that rehabbing squirrels get a very specific diet to avoid developing MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease) we do not offer nuts and fruits as anything other than a tiny and occasional treat because foods like that will not contain the proper nutrients for them. Alongside his formula, Nugget receives daily vitamin blocks from Henry’s, a variety of calcium rich greens and other veggies and Oxbow garden rodent food 🥰. A proper diet will make all the difference in giving him the best start to life and making sure he is strong and healthy for spring release!
Happy pidgie purring 🥰. Goldie’s Mama loved her very much but unfortunately could not keep her, so this precious little love bug has joined our crew. Today was her first day of freedom out of her quarantine kennel and I am absolutely smitten 🧡
Precious Phoenix has had one heck of an uphill battle since arriving. I will share his harrowing story once he is further out of the woods but for now I just want to celebrate this little win. He’s spent the last two weeks dancing a very fine line between life and death but was finally strong enough for a bath to help rid him of some oil residue from the gas station where he was found. Needless to say he hated his bath but he LOVED the hair dryer!
One of the most rewarding parts of rescue is watching the birds we’ve raised and rehabilitated, graduate into the soft release aviary. It is magical watching them find their instincts and get ready to take on the big world! Whenever a new group goes in, the yard is instantly filled with local birds coming to say hello, by the time they are ready for release, they’ve already picked out their new flock mates and the transition is smooth!!
Barbossa is doing so well!! His wing injury is unfortunately quite old and has just healed off kilter. Considering he has not been able to fly for who knows how long, and with only one foot, this brave boy has beaten every possible survival odd. He’s an older pigeon so he truly just loves sitting quietly in his plushie bed watching the other pigeons antics from the privacy of his condo. He’s still got a long road to being back up to a proper weight but he is FINALLY starting to eat and drink on his own alongside our tube feeding schedule!! He is not a fan of people so I try not to poke and prod him any more than I have to. Pigeons normally love interacting with us through the healing process so Barbossa’s aversion makes me strongly suspect that his injuries were the result of human cruelty 💔. He can take all the time he needs, and if he never fully warms up, that is okay too! We understand and will meet him wherever he is comfortable in his journey. We know all too well that some humans are truly horrible.
Bubbles is doing AMAZING!! She still has lots of bumps and bruises to heal from but every day she’s feeling better! She’s a champion eater as most baby pigeons are and insists that she’s never been fed a day in her life the second I’m done feeding her 🤣
Aughra, our friendly neighborhood grackle has molted his entire tail at once and now looks like a spooky potato 😅
We’ve been helping our local flocks beat the heat with lots of ice cold watermelon! They are all so used to being spoiled that this little mockingbird will stand outside and beep his displeasure if the watermelon plates are empty 🤣
Gemma and Jewel, the two orphaned doves whos mama gave her life protecting, are coming along beautifully and will be ready to go into the aviary next week ❤️. Time has flown by and it’s been such a joy to raise them!
Lullaby was found in a parking lot unable to fly. After some coaxing to get her out from under a car, I found that the reason looks to be muscle wasting from severe malnutrition. She’s still a squeaker, only just recently fledged and it looks like she wasn’t navigating life on her own all that well. She is tucked into an incubator, has been given emergency electrolytes and formula and will have nothing to worry about from now on. With a full tummy and a safe warm bed, she can finally drift off to peaceful sleep 🥰. Welcome to Hopes Wings, Lullaby.
Today we got a call about an adult female dove that had been attacked by a stray dog on a job site. Unfortunately the dove succumbed to her injuries immediately but then the finder spotted her nest, with two tiny babies inside, one born just today. That beautiful Mama gave her life protecting her babies and we will honor her by keeping them safe. Welcome Gemma and Jewel to Hopes Wings. Rest well little Mama, we promise to take good care of them.
When the neighborhood residents know you are the best breakfast spot in town 😅
