My lil man Ricky is starting to shape up. He will be 18months at the end of June and I couldn’t be happier with where we are in training. To those that have helped me along this journey I truly can not thank you enough. Our first trial is this weekend and we are going just to get a gauge on how he handles the goings on of a trial. Here is a snippet of our work yesterday morning.

Located in Liverpool, Pennsylvania but with transport options all over the US through trusted transports.
Parents are health tested
Dam: hips good - elbows normal - CEA 1copy carrier - rest of the panel is clear.
Sire: hips good - elbows normal - full panel clear
Both parents are proven herding dogs.
Mom is the split face. She started going to the head on cattle at 6 months and will clean bite both ends when asked. She is powerful on sheep all kinds of livestock but rates down when asked to very well. She’s pictured with her November 2022-November 2023 awards on sheep and cattle. She’s run in AKC area a trials and NEBCA Pro novice trials. She will work anything you point her at and has a wonderfull off switch in the house.
Sire is imported from the Czech Republic. His littermate sister at 9yrs old is still competing in open level trials in the UK and winning. The sire has competed in and moved onto the final rounds of double lift trials here in the US. He is powerful on sheep but reads his stock and rates down very well. Beautiful natural wide outrun.
Willow’s litter was 3 weeks old this past weekend! We have 2 maybe 3 medium coated pups! They are starting to get quite the little personalities! Indy is NOT a fan of being held where Azara is the most outgoing pup ever.
Rae’s litter was 7 weeks old on Sunday! They got to spend the day adventuring with momma. We went on a ride to Teri & Gene’s place to meet some potential families. They did wonderfully! No accidents or sickness in the crates and they were comfortable in the new place almost immediately. Also we have some ears that are starting to stay up! I suspect most of the litter will be prick eared!
They got a pan of fresh kitty litter to play with this morning. I may or may not be regretting that enrichment toy idea 🤦♀️ but hey they had a blast. I’ll just be vacuuming up kitty litter for the next three years. 🙃
Cuteness overload at our property! Rae’s litter was 6 weeks on Sunday! Willows litter was 2 weeks on Saturday and 3 of our 4 bred ewes have lambed!
I may be grey or just plain bald by the time they all go off to their new homes. But they make it worth it!
Puppies galore.
They are all growing like weeds and the older set are about 90% accurate on using the puppy pads to potty which is making my life a whole lot easier thankfully!

Results haven’t been updated on the website yet but Pawprints just called and confirmed that Rae’s litter was sired completely by Aron!
I can not wait to see how thes pups turn out! They are backed by some of the classiest dogs out there!
Willow gave us 5 big and healthy pups today. 2 females 3 males. She’s one proud momma!

We had limited time to trial this past year. Most of the trials we attended were 2/weekend some of them 4/weekend. We walked away with top 5 in all but 1 trial.
Once she has her pups and we get back into training I hope to move up to the next level. Time will tell if either of us are ready for that yet.

Willow worked lovely for me. We have very limited availability to work cattle. In fact she had only seen cattle one time since November of 2021. That was the weekend before this trial as a tune up. But clearly she can handle her own and retains everything like a sponge!

Next up is hopefully a litter by Czech who is owned by Becky Bellaman. They should arrive around 01/20/2023.
A little over a week until Willow’s D-day! She prefers a shirt “pillow” to the cushy bed under my desk. She’s purely uncomfortable most of the time. Puppy count X-ray is tomorrow! I am thinking we have 7-8 on board. Keiffer thinks we have 9!
Rae’s litter has taken off and are growing like weeds.
We have open eyes, are scooting around pretty well and are starting to play. Here are pictures from one week old and two weeks old.
Rae decided to bless us with 6 Christmas miracles. 2 males and 4 females! Blue and Green collars are the males the rest are girls.

1 years worth of ribbons. We didn’t get out a whole lot this past year but every time we did we improved our scores a little bit more. Willow is such a willing partner. November 2021 - November 2022. Can’t wait to see where the future leads us.

Dual sired litter
IMP ARON & IMP KEELAN x IS RAIN LILLY
Due Date: 12/22/2022**
Puppies will be DNA tested as soon as they are born to confirm sires. This is a dual sired litter that we expect to produce pups that are biddable and have smooth natural working styles. They should be naturally mindful of stock but able to handle both heavy and light stock with ease.
Rae :
This female has not yet proven herself on the trial field. Being a Covid puppy set us behind on training. However, once we got hooked up on sheep there’s been no looking back. She is proving to have a lovely natural pace and is just wonderful to watch work sheep with natural fluidity. She will also work poultry and geese.
She handles sheep with just enough grit to keep them moving but doesn’t unsettle them. She has confidence to spare. She will walk right up to a group of ram’s faces and hold her ground with out blowing up. She has proven to have nice, natural flanks, is starting on her inside flanks, and shows enthusiastic shedding ability. She is a quick learner. She’s been with Teri Rhodes for the last 60 days and in that time Teri has brought her further along then I was able to in the year I had spent with her working on just basics.
Which brings me to the next thing that I would like to highlight. Rae is a fantastic house dog. She lives with 4 dogs, 3 cats and the odd small fuzzy or scaly creatures we keep and easily integrated into Teri's household. She knows when she’s in the house that it’s relax time. You can often find her curled up somewhere snoozing or engaging Willow with a game of keep away with the toys. My 4 nieces ranging from 4-14 are around her constantly and she loves each of them. Because she was a Covid pup and did not get as much early socialization as I would have liked, she can be a bit reserved when first meeting new people but quickly becomes your friend.

IMP Aron :
He was imported by Gene Scheninger from Angie Driscoll and comes from the proven Kinloch dogs, a proven winning line of dogs. He has sired winning dogs across the pond. He continues to place in the top 100 in USBCHA Open dogs. His highest ranking at one point was 5th!
Aron is a wonderful dog, level headed and unflappable, and yet he has an infectious enthusiasm and contagious zest for life. When working he is extremely cool headed. He will walk into the face of sheep and hold a terrific amount of pressure with his quiet power. Being a kind dog to sheep, he easily 'makes friends' with sheep helping to keep them relaxed. Aron is always working with you and not against you, and is highly adaptable to any situation. Aronnis biddable and an easy dog to live with. Often times you can find him self entertaining with whatever he finds near by (his favorite toy is an empty plastic water bottle). However, ask him to fetch sheep and he's off for the task.
Aron’s puppies from previous litters are proven to be versatile working dogs. His one pup Kinloch Taz is proving to be a wonderful trial dog for Angie. His trial results so far are posted in the pictures.

IMP BCZECH x WOMPING WILLOW
Due Date: 01/20/2023
Super excited to get this opportunity to pair my girl Willow with Becky Bellaman’s Czech.
We expect this pairing to produce pups that are biddable and balanced on all types of livestock. They should have enough presence to handle the both heavy and light stock with ease.
Willow:
This female has proven herself to not only myself but to anyone who has watched us run that she is adaptable to different types of stock.
She handles cattle with just enough grit to keep them moving but doesn’t unsettle them. She has limited experience on cattle but she has walked away with High in Points Cattle multiple first and seconds and two Reserve High in trial awards.
We train and trial primarily on sheep. NEBCA year of 2021/2022 being our first year of trialing. We currently run in the Pro-novice level. Not that either of us are pros by any means. But Willow is better suited for the larger field. Which with bumping her to that class she has excelled. Continually placing In the top 5 of the trials we have competed at. The only exception being the NEBCA Finals due to human error on my part. She has enough grit to turn around and move on a stubborn ram but she can go right into a pen with ewes and lambs and is as gentle with the lambs as she is with my nieces.
Which brings me to the next thing that she has shown she excels at. She has been raise IN our home along side of multiple dogs, cats, rabbits and all sorts of scaly creatures. She has a wonderful off switch and knows when it’s time to work and time to relax. My 4 nieces ranging from 4-14 are around her constantly and she loves each of them.
Czech:
This boy really is the best boy. He was imported by Becky Bellaman as a pup from the Czech Republic. He comes from a proven winning line of dogs based in the Czech republic. Most recently his littermate sister won the Czech Open at 9 years old!
Czech has excelled at every level he’s competed in with Becky. He has won open level trials and competed in double lift competitions! He handles pairs wonderfully and will move the heaviest of rams and has helped round up escaped cattle from a heavily wooded area before as well!
I have had the pleasure of running Czech a few times as a learning experience for me since Willow was my first herding dog. In our first trial together we placed 3rd! The second trial we timed out at the pen due to my timing being off. (Still working on that)
Czech’s puppies from previous litters are proven to be versatile working dogs in the real world. A pair of pups have made wonderful farm hands on large scale sheep and Cattle operations in Wisconsin. There are multiple pups in Pennsylvania that are proving to be wonderful sheep hands and promising trial dogs. Not to forget the one pup who is a great ambassador for the breed being used as a goose dog. Even with being proven to be hard working dogs they all have the same wonderful demeanor as Czech. Who I don’t believe has ever met a stranger in his life.
Dog introduction:
Name: Willow
Willow is my first border collie. I had grown to love the breed over the years prior to bringing her home. But when I saw her newborn picture I knew she was the one. I will admit I did not do my normal due diligence on pedigree and breeder research. But turns out I got lucky with her being Clear of all possible defects.
She has been started on stock as I am attempting to self train her and myself. (pretty sure she’s training me now) but with the help of a dear friend and some reaching videos she has proven herself on the AKC trial started feild in 2021. I am hoping 2022 will only further confirm my belief that she is one heck of a working dog. I hope to finish her on AKC trials and move onto USBCHA trials on both cattle and sheep.

I can’t believe how time flies. Josie’s last litter is already 4 weeks old and they are all doing wonderfully.

Being a dog breeder is NOT for the feint of heart.
People think breeding is just an easy way to get money and that dog breeders are only “in it for the money” or whatever. Let me tell you that dog breeding is NOT easy money. Period.
Good dog breeders know what they are doing and invest in their dogs. They invest in health testing, proper grooming (or they take the time to learn how to do it right and spend hours doing it themselves), they are always educating themselves and bettering themselves. They are striving to keep up with the newest science and research on all kinds of things. Coat type, colour, health and genetics, testing their dogs need etc. Always trying to keep up with NO guarantees.
Let me tell you that once you THINK you are well educated on something related to animals, something new ALWAYS comes up and you NEVER stop learning. Anyone who thinks they know everything about anything truly knows nothing at all.
On top of all that, the biggest stressor about being a dog breeder is the uncertainty.
They have just invested $5000 into a breeding dog. Will this dog even pass it’s health testing? (About an additional $1000). If the dog does not pass it’s health testing, which is typically not even done until 1-2 years, then all the money invested in that dog is gone. Even if the dog was guaranteed, you still need to wait for the breeder to have another suitable litter, for there to be a suitable puppy, and then it’s another year or so before that puppy matures and is old enough to pass (or possibly fail) health testing.
Let’s just assume this breeder got lucky and all their dogs passed all their health testing (I say lucky but buying from quality lines really gives you the advantage with this), then it’s time to breed the dog.
Most breeders breed their dogs for the first time between 18-26 months. This presents a new challenge. Will the male be fertile? Will the female even “catch”?
Great the female is pregnant! Will she stay pregnant? She could miscarry. Will she require an emergency c-section? A planned one? Will the puppies be born alive? Will some be born dead? Will i have to revive some? Do I have the skills to assist in a situation where something goes wrong with the labour? The vet is half an hour away, will we make it there?
Okay! Let’s say we had a smooth delivery and all puppies have made it into the world safely. Will any have any birth defects causing them to have to be put to sleep or require round the clock care? Is there a cleft pallet? A smaller and weaker puppy? Will any puppies need tube feeding? Do I take this sick newborn puppy with a very low chance of survival to the vet? Will the vet even help? What is my budget on this newborn puppy that will likely not make it? $1000? $5000? Or do i let nature take its course? What is best for this puppy? How do I balance real life and making sure I’ve done enough? How do I live with the guilt if the puppy does not survive? How do I watch a puppy pass away? Should I hold it? Should I let it be with mom? Vet says there’s no hope/ not to bother bringing pup in. What do I do? What if another puppy gets sick? How do I dispose of the body once the puppy dies? Should I keep the body and pay for an autopsy that will most likely be inconclusive?
What if I have taken a deposit on this puppy already? How do I tell the family? What if it’s due to sickness and I lose the whole litter?
These are just some of the thoughts that go through a breeders mind when something isn’t quite right with ONE or TWO of the puppies.
Let’s assume the litter is healthy and they make it to the week mark. Mom could get sick. She could get an infection from giving birth, she could get mastitis (this often results in the teat turning black and splitting open, losing your girl is a very real possibility). We are frantically checking on moms and babies multiple times a day and trying to prevent anything we can, but we can only do so much.
What if mom gets low calcium even when supplemented? I now have to bottle feed an entire litter. How do I manage that and make sure my puppies are still healthy? Will formula be enough to keep them healthy? What if they don’t like it? Do I try the home made formula that isn’t scientifically proven but that the pups like much better? Do I add supplements? Do I let mom nurse sometimes? How do I keep everyone healthy and happy until weaning?
Let’s just assume that the whole litter and mom is healthy and makes it until weaning.
Puppies seem a bit skinny but are being fed a lot, why? P**p is stinky? Time to take fecals into the vet… or do we treat what we think it is with the meds we have on hand and have paid hundreds of dollars for.
What if puppies catch parvo before they get a chance to be vaccinated? Will i lose the whole litter? Do I treat at home or at the vet? How will I handle a whole litter being sick? Most dog breeders have more then one breeding dog and Parvo lives in the soil for YEARS. Will all my future puppies get this? Am I ruined? Do I quit breeding? What do I do? Can this be properly cleaned? When do I let the families of the recovered puppies take them home? How do I tell my families that their chosen puppy that they have been waiting for for 7 weeks didn’t make it?
The uncertainty and stress that goes into breeding alone is something that only few can handle. This is why breeders don’t usually stay in the business for very long.
Let’s just pretend everything goes perfectly. Pups pass their vet checks, they go home and life is good. What happens if they get sick after they go home? Lots of things can happen. Are they grounds for replacement? If they are not, and the client insists on a refund, do you just make them happy by refunding regardless of your contract to avoid court and to preserve your good name… even when you know they are in the wrong?
Dog breeders’ biggest critics are often other breeders. You can never please everyone and there will always be someone trying to bring you down. Are you breeding purebreds? Are they registered? Are they the right colour to be in the show ring? Oh, All your dogs do is trot around a ring and look pretty to get titles? Oh, your dog is working lines and doesn’t show conformation? Gross. Wait your dog is registered and isn’t a standard colour for your breed? Well you must be a backyard breeder then. Your dogs are purebred? Well they aren’t as healthy as my mixed breeds… Wait, you breed health tested mix breeds? You are a backyard breeder. You only charge 1000 for your dogs? Maybe you shouldn’t be breeding. You make MONEY breeding dogs?!? You are doing it all wrong! Your dogs got a transmissible disease? Your kennel must be dirty. You raise your dogs in your home? That’s gross. You raise your dogs in a kennel? That’s abuse. You have more then 2 litters a year? You must be a puppy mill. You have less then two litters a year? You’re not a real breeder…
These are just some of the statements breeders of all kinds hear. The amount of scrutiny we face from other dog people is absolutely insane and really it’s quite sad.
Being a breeder is so not about playing with cute puppies all day. It’s cleaning up 💩 all day, stressing 24/7, and still loving the dogs and pups enough to provide them with good quality of care and giving them the best head start you know how.
Honestly this novel is just a fraction of what goes on with breeders.
I respect any breeder that has been doing this a few years and has seen the good, the bad, and the ugly, and still continues to breed and enjoy breeding.
As I said before, it takes a very special person.
I hope this will maybe change a few peoples perspectives on what it takes to be a dog breeder. As well as the prices of puppies. It’s not cheap for use either. So do research on the breed and know what you will be expected to spend.

First, let me introduce myself, my name is Sarah Mullin, my husband Keiffer and I are currently renovating an 1800’s era farm house. The house we are in is the original main house to the farm my parents own. Once the house is done this spring we and are going to start building our first kennel where we hope to eventually house and train up to 8 dogs at one time. With the ultimate goal to find a few well rounded individuals worth using as a foundation in building a name for ourselves in the herding and hunting industries.
