THURSDAY THOUGHTS
Following on from yesterday’s Wednesday Wisdom about the dangers of heat waves for dogs…we thought we’d reassure new dog owners, and also remind experienced owners, about how differently your dogs may behave in the heat as we have had several enquiries about their dogs not eating or being moody!
Let’s face it, when it’s hot, we are all a bit grumpier and sometimes we just don’t feel like eating. It’s just normal. But it is exactly the same for our dogs.
With the heat that we have been dealing with these last few weeks, a lot of dogs just don’t fancy eating! It is just too much effort, and their appetite is reduced where they are just trying to do a little as physically possible to stay cool. So, if they don’t fancy eating or are eating less than usual don’t worry too much as the heat can often put them off their food.
You may also find that your dog may be less inclined to cuddle up on the sofa or want affection. They may even be a bit more grumbly and restless than normal. Dogs can be rather lethargic or grouchy when its too hot. It’ll pass as the weather cools off!
Ways to help your hounds cope with the heat? Dogs will naturally find their own way to cope with the heat, and will seek cool or breezy places to lay. But in saying that, some greyhounds particularly don’t seem to have two brain cells to rub together and will lay directly in the blazing sun and stare at you while panting, like it’s your fault they’re hot! (Those who know, know!)
Things you can do at home to help your dogs cope is:
• Constant access to fresh cool water.
• A paddling pool is often appreciated! (Not always, you may get glared at!)
• Get a fan and point it at their bed
• Offer them frozen treats such as stuffed kongs, yoghurt or ice cubes
• Limit outdoor time/Do not walk them/Keep an eye on any play or zoomies to prevent overheating
Additionally, cool mats and cool coats are worth their weight in gold. Especially for at risk breeds like Greyhounds. We find the EasiDri Coats very good but any of that fashion will do.
Heatwaves are all well and good when you’re sat on holiday by a pool with a cocktail in hand. But really, overall, they aren’t very much fun for our four legged friends! 🧊
