Meanwhile in Michigan…

The growing season will start again with planting out in early March and the first of the tulips arriving on scene in mid-late April.

In the meantime, January is for presprouting corms, end-of-year book keeping, finalizing all the plans for this growing season, and catching up on all the deep-cleaning housework and self care that I neglected in late summer and fall when I was high on flowers but low on internal resources. (Sometimes we check off tasks from the comfort of our blankies. 😻)

I haven’t done a great job of promoting the summer flower subscriptions, but it’s about 75% full and I would love to get you on my delivery route for July through September. All the details are in my webshop. 💐💖

There’s so much going on in the world right now, and I’m doing my best to see the beautiful things and be the good. I hope you’re taking care. 🙏

Seed swap AND seed shop are open! 💐

If you don’t have seeds to swap but your 2025 plans include getting your hands in the dirt, I put together a collection of intro-level specialty cut flower seeds to try out your own cutting garden. It includes both of my custom color mixes for two types of zinnias that are tried-and-true favorites. You’ll also receive a free packet of seeds with purchase which is lemon basil — an easy to grow foliage with an amazing scent that will complement your home-grown flowers.

Seed swappers receive a coupon code for free shipping on any seeds from my shop after purchasing the swap.

Let’s grow some beautiful blooms this season!

Do we want to continue the flowers-only seed swap this year? Please vote in the poll button in this caption (IG.)

For the last 5 years my flower seed swap has connected gardeners and flower growers across the country for a little winter fun, seed stash diversification, and garden planning fuel. 💚

Registration would open January 6 and your 20 packets of seeds would need to be postmarked to me by January 31. (That is a hard deadline, friends.) US only. Full details are in my webshop if you haven’t participated in a seed swap before.

I would be limiting this to just 20 folks this year. Please let me know if we should continue or take a break. 🙂

Wishing you all a beautiful day of gratitude! 🧡📽️: August 11, 2024

November so far ✨

1) The view this morning. Still no frost or freezing temps yet which is usual for us.

2) New fave glaze combo on serving plates I made with my dried flowers and grasses.

3) Back with for her winter porch pot season. I love making greenery base layers so she can work her magic with all the gorgeous design elements.

4) These backlit canna leaves. Full stop. 😍

5) Final vases for my last few weeks at the community studio. Our art therapy program was abruptly cancelled which has been challenging for all the participants, myself included. Finalizing next steps and working towards getting my own kiln so I can be free to create. 🤞🏼

6) Tulip planting. Waiting on my final bulb order to arrive! (See #7)

7) Fusarium-riddled tulip bulbs from the wholesaler that went straight into the trash. PSA if your bulbs are anything but a beautiful cream color and firm to a light squeeze, it’s probably best not to plant them.

8) Mugs I made for a customer appreciation gift, but they didn’t pay their bill. I know it’s tacky to say that out loud, but I think it’s important to keep it real. Growing specialty cut flowers is beautiful work, but hard work like any other small business. 🙏

This month has been beautiful yet challenging for so many of us. Wishing you bright and hopeful moments in the coming days. ❤️

The last handful of dahlias for the season. 🌸

Still no hard frost here and no freezing temps in the forecast, but it’s time for the dahlia tubers to be dug up and divided. Taking full advantage of these unusual temps in this mid 70s for this wet and dirty job. Grateful to be tucking away tuber gold to be planted again next season.

My tulip bulbs have been delayed in shipping for over a week, but once they’re here and planted the fall tasks will be complete.

Soil blocking trays have been washed and are ready to start seeds in December, February, April and beyond.

It’s the final push, and it feels so good to be ready to plant out seedlings and corms come March. 🙏

The time has come to close down the shop for fresh flower orders. Today (Monday, October 14) at 5:00p is the last chance to order an arrangement for delivery on Friday morning.

I’m ready to shift gears to final annual bed cleanup, topping off all beds with compost so they’re ready for early spring planting, get the dahlias dug up and their tubers divided for winter storage, and plant the tulip bulbs.

Reminder to current flower subscribers that renewals are open just for you until October 31. Please check your email for the private links I sent out. 2025 subscriptions open to the public on November 1.

Thank you again for a beautiful season of blooms. 🙏💐

Last call for the season! Special order arrangements will close on Monday, October 14, at 5:00pm for delivery on the morning of Friday, October 18.

I can’t thank you all enough for your support this season. I’m incredible grateful to spend my time growing beautiful blooms and designing ceramic vases that make arranging easier for you when it comes time to refill them with your own flowers. 🏺🌸 💖

Subscription bouquets go out this Friday and next Friday, and then stay tuned for some recaps of the season. There was so much flower joy. 🥹

Heading out today to finish fall planting for the early spring blooms. 🌼

The seedlings will establish roots in the remaining warm, sunny days and ride out the winter under frost cloth to bloom in the spring. It’s a little later than I would like to be planting seedlings, but hopefully better late than never.

This has been one of the most challenging growing seasons I’ve encountered to date. Growers never anticipate everything will go perfectly. Some crops will flourish one season and not so much the next. Weather and pest pressures are different every year, but *every* season is beautiful. Wins and losses go hand in hand, and I love the challenge.

Sowing hope for next spring. 🙏

Wrapped bouquets and bud vase poseys are available for one final day, Sunday, September 29, 11-5, at The Rabbit Hole 💐

So much flower goodness and fall texture! The sweet annie smells amazing, and much of the bouquet can be dried to enjoy through the cold season.

DYK The Rabbit Hole opened a second space right next door to their current shop? Pop over to their page for a preview of all the super chic vintage home decor and then please swing by to check it out in person and grab a bouquet, too.

Huge thank you to The Rabbit Hole and their amazing community for all of the locally-grown flower support this season! 💐💖

100% obsessed with the colors and textures that went out this morning for subscribers and special orders. Serious September vibes. ✨

Big chonky stems of scented geranium and the last of the lemon basil for the season added a nice, soft fragrance.

Beds have been cleared of the first summer succession and are being replanted and reseeded for spring blooms. 2025 is well underway. 🧡

I made a few more of my ceramic centerpiece-style vases. 🏺

Of course they’re delivered filled with locally-grown flowers, but I designed these to be easy for you to create your own centerpieces without the use of mechanics like chicken wire when you’re ready to refill with your own blooms.

I’m still delivering on Tuesday and Friday mornings until Mother Nature decides we’re done for the season — usually late October but I have a feeling it may be a couple weeks earlier this year?

Arrangements are always available to order in my websh🌸p to send a Happy Birthday, Congratulations, or just because.

I had a feeling this one was different! 🦋

I get a lot of swallowtail butterflies here because I’ve planted their native host plants: Golden Alexander for Black Swallowtails and Spicebush for Spicebush Swallowtails. I see Eastern and Giants, too.

While harvesting last week I saw this Pipevine Swallowtail out of the corner of my eye and couldn’t believe it!! ✨

Here in SE Michigan the native hosts plants for pipevines to lay their eggs on to become caterpillars that eat that plant until they’re ready to form their chrysalis and eventually eclose as butterflies are:

• Dutchman’s Pipe*
• Virginia Snakeroot
• Wild Ginger

I did plant wild ginger a year ago, but I don’t think it’s established enough yet to support the larval stage. This was probably just visiting from elsewhere.

Every year I expand the biodiversity here and every year I see a new insect, bee, caterpillar, butterfly, bird, etc. Grateful for this moment!! 🙏

Have you seen anything new in your garden this season? Were you able to identify it? 💚

*Please research the appropriate natives for your region and make sure to plant the right pipevine as one variety is toxic to them.

Dahlias dahlias dahlias for subscriber bouquets! Sorry about the yellow but I feel like Henry Eilers shouldn’t count. 😬😇

What a gorgeous time of year for these happy blooms!

If you had marigolds, statice, salmon zinnias or the cute Rudbeckia ‘Henry Eilers’ in your bouquet or arrangement today, grew them. Grateful for the camaraderie and your mad growing skills, Ruth! 🧡

Hi, I’m Jolon. 👩🏻‍🌾💐

I get all kinds of creative pronunciations of my name, but it’s J-oh-l-on. Emphasis on the second syllable “lon.”

My first peppermint zinnias and mammoth sunflowers bloomed 13 growing seasons ago, and when the goldfinches and butterflies started to visit them I was hooked. While I spent lots of time on my grandparent’s farm as a kid, I realized that my adult life in the city had disconnected me from the natural world. I wanted that connection back.

Now I grow flowers in our little urban sanctuary to bring you joy from spring through fall. The flowers in your bouquets and arrangements have been blessed by all kinds of pollinators here in my no-spray zone, and I hope they’re a happiness booster in your life.

Do you remember the first time you really connected to flowers? Please share if you’d like 👇

Looking forward to day 2 at tomorrow. Can’t believe I’m actually here after following Melanie’s beautiful farm here on IG for years. Her hard work shows and it’s even more beautiful in person.
