Hi, I’m Jolon! In case we haven’t met:
I started gardening 13 years ago, and this is my fourth season professionally growing cut flowers.
I grow at home in our front & back yards turned micro flower farm. On a continuum of garden aesthetic to production vibe, it leans toward the latter. I do still grow a tiny patch of veg in our front yard that apparently the neighborhood kids steal tomatoes from. (The little girl on the pink bike spilled the tea. 💁🏻♀️)
Up ‘til now I’ve focused on growing seasonal flowers for subscriptions and special order arrangements, but I would like to do more small events.
Thank you to each of you who have supported this flowery venture in any way. I’m so very grateful for the opportunity to do this work. 🙏

I love growing flowers. I love everything about the growing season. I don’t want to miss a thing which means I have to be careful not to work all the time just because I can. Maybe other folks who work from home can relate?
Anyway, I took a moment for creativity during my second wind tonight. I used to have a vintage cake plate, but I broke it so I wanted to make a new one. Well, if my shrinkage calculations are correct then this should be a cake plate. 🤞🏼😂

Like dahlias, lilacs don’t last as long in the vase as the rest of the blooms in an arrangement. That def doesn’t mean we leave them out when they’re in season because what smells better than lilacs in the spring?!?
When they’ve faded simply snip off the cluster of blossoms and leave the structure of the arrangement in tact. Or, remove the branches completely and reset the remaining flowers.
For the best vase life of any bloom, the key is to keep the water and vase crystal clean and trim stems daily.
Now please excuse me while I go stick my face in some lilacs. 😉

I also need to tell you that I made a mistake. The green branches pictured here are Autumn Olive which is incredibly invasive. I didn’t know what it was when I grabbed it, and I won’t be sending it out in any arrangements this week.
When we know better we can do better. I grow my own flowers, supplement with blooms from area farms when necessary AND avoid the use of invasive plant material. 🙏
I planted a white lilac bush last fall but it’s so tiny and hasn’t bloomed yet. These gorgeous lilacs are from 💜
Every spring I watch for the lone white violet in our front yard. This year there are four little plants, and it made me so happy. Allow the tiniest, magical moments Mother Nature offers to soothe your soul. 🙏🏼🤍
We’re used to the modern convenience of whatever we want when we want it. Locally grown flowers help get us back into the rhythm of the natural world. 🌷
What I love the most about growing flowers without any kind of structure (greenhouse or hoophouse) is that I’m limited to what Mother Nature intended for that season.
It’s truly no limitation because I feel a greater appreciation for what we have when we have it. Spring means tulips are with us for usually 2-3 weeks. We might get 4-6 weeks or so with the anemone and ranunculus.
Taking full advantage and arranged these delicate, shimmery petals just for us. ✨

The daffodils are done. Anemones are slowly sending up their first flush of short stems and wonky blossoms.
Lots of soft colors at the moment but bolder color is on the way.

Pink dandelion is back 🌸
I started these from seed 4(?) years ago. They usually bloom around the first of May, but like most things are a bit early this year.
What we have left for a lawn that hasn’t been turned into a garden bed is all natural, and I LOVE dandelions for the early pollinators. What do you think about planting them in novelty colors? 🤩
Garden Whites are not native to the US and are a pest of brassicas and the cut flower stock, but this was a sweet little moment during harvest last night. 🌷

I truly love the schedule and routine of the growing season, but it can be tricky to sneak away during the summer. We are trying to make up for it this fall with long weekends away when possible. 💙 Made a flying trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to visit my dad this past weekend. Depending on the destination, things are closed or have limited hours during the off-season but we are all good with just lakes, rocks, trees and the beautiful skies. A few years back someone suggested it’s ok for this lil account of mine to just be a soft place for folks to land and enjoy beautiful flowers for a moment. I took that to heart. 🙏🏼 Relax, breathe, and #flowerchurch with me. The most important things I did today: Watched milkweed seeds blow away in the wind. Listened to the waves. Watched yellow leaves fall. Visited with an Eastern Comma butterfly. (I didn’t get to see the underside of the wings to confirm, but I only see 3 wing spots here not 4?) There’s something beautiful about the decline of plants in the fall. I’m delivering the final spring subscription bouquets as fast as the sunflowers are ready.🌻 That five weeks with higher than average temps but not much rain definitely stalled them, but they’re showing their beautiful faces now. You’ll notice most of the sunflowers are closed when you receive your bouquet, but have no fear they will open in your home. Sunflowers are just another of the locally-grown blooms that are harvested before they’re fully developed. Our brains so often reach for flowers in full bloom because that’s when they’re the most beautiful, but when harvested at the right stage we can enjoy them longer. Excuse my shaky hands 🌹 It was my first season growing garden roses, but the learning experience isn’t over. With our site conditions I decided it would be best to grow them in large containers, so I’m still deciding how I will overwinter them. They both bloomed prolifically, but these are the first I’ve cut to enjoy indoors. This is Koko Loko.
