Small children must always be supervised when they are around dogs, even if it is a trusted family dog. Do not let them try to play with or touch a sleeping dog. A sleepy startled dog might bite.

It's normal for puppies to be restless during the first 3-days of them going to their new home. This is also a crucial time for attachment forming and a routine to be put in place to help the puppy settle down and prevent separation issues, like isolation anxiety. You can start getting off on the right foot with your puppy from the word GO by enrolling in Dawg Central's Puppy Plus correspondence programme before you bring your puppy home. Socialisation classes will follow as soon as your pup is ready to join in.

Puppy home school

We get our puppies from all sorts of backgrounds, breeders, shelters, strays, you name it. We bring them home at different ages, and puppy schools have different rules about what age your puppy must be before they can join the class. The majority of puppies leave their moms and littermates at eight weeks, and they generally join classes at the same time. [ 366 more words ]

Tail docking is illegal unless it has to be amputated for medical reasons by a vet. Dogs need their tails to communicate with other dogs and their humans. They also use their tails to balance their bodies, especially at old age when their legs become a bit wobbly.

Training treats should be deeeelicious, soft and squishy. Hard chewy treats will slow down the training and it must be yummy enough to keep your dog motivated. They should not be bigger than a pea, because a full tummy equals a very sleepy dog.

At around 8-weeks old, puppies go through a phase we call the fear impact stage. This is where they tend to be a bit less brave in their environment. It is very important to avoid scary or negative interactions or events because it will influence a pup's response to the 'scary or bad' thing that happened for the rest of his life. This life stage lasts about 3-weeks.

Dawg Central origin story

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who sat on the back door step and fed the household dogs lumps of cheese... I do not remember this but my mom reminds me of this very often. My life has always centered around animals, and when I got the opportunity to study dog behavior I took it, not really knowing where it would lead. I just knew I had to. Soon after I left a soul destroying job, and started a whole new journey as a dog caregiver at a shelter. I do not think there is another job in the world that teaches you so much about dogs, no book would have taught me the things these dogs taught me.

I continued my studies, for them, for my clients and for my own misunderstood fosters. (I have not stopped studying). Tellington touch, opened up a whole new world of working with animals for me, and I strongly follow the Ttouch philosophy. They often refer to it as the touch that teaches, a non invasive, low stress and mindful approach to working with all beings. Here, it’s often the animals that teaches us, which is just as important as when we teach animals.

I was internationally certified with the IMDT as a dog trainer where my knowledge and skills were assessed. I am one of only eight people in South Africa, with this certification. IMDT is known for ethical and humane training methods, with very high standards.
