This is Wispa. Wispa would like to remind you of the issues of walking her & her 4 (or 3 🤷‍♀️) legged friends in the warm weather;

🔥 Dogs don't wear shoes like us. The pavement gets very hot and they have no option but to stand on it and burn their paws which is very painful.
🥵 Dogs can't sweat like we do so they overheat quickly and are unable to cool themselves efficiently so their organs die.
🌡️ Flat nosed dogs(brachycephalic breeds) such as bulldogs and french bulldogs are more susceptible to heat stroke - when they pant and get hot, the soft tissues in the mouth and throat swell making it impossible to breathe.

🐾 Dogs are man's best friend. Your best friend will come for a walk if you tell them to. They'll chase the ball if you throw it. They'll go for a run if you make them. They want to please you and you've trained them to do just that. The first issue you might notice is when they collapse at the end of the task you've set them by which time it could be too late.

☀️ Be sensible in the warm weather, protect your best friend so they can remain by your side.

☠️ No dog ever died from not having a walk. ☠️ Dogs DO die from walking in the heat.

🚨 In a heat stroke emergency call your vet immediately to warn them your on your way!
🪭 DO NOT cold shower your dog - this causes them to shiver which warms them up more and cause them to go into shock. Instead cover them with a water soaked towel that has been rung out or a cooling blanket/jacket to cool them slowly.

🐰🐣 Happy Easter 🐣🐰

Just a few tips for enjoying easter weekend with your furbabies.
🍫 Chocolate is toxic to dogs! Buy dog friendly easter eggs for your 4 legged friends but do not give them human ones.
🌺 Lily's, the beautiful easter flower, are highly toxic to cats and cause irreversible kidney failure. The petals, the stem and even the liquid droplets they leave around them.
🐰 Bunnies are not just for Easter. They are life long commitments, living up to around 10years old. Bunnies are harder to care for correctly than dogs and cats and do not deserve a life stuck in a hutch outside when the kids get bored.
🍇 Currants, raisins and sultanas are highly toxic to dogs so hot cross buns should not be on their menu.
🍗 Meat bones splinter and can cause gastrointestinal upsets ranging from minor bouts of diarrhoea to intestinal blockages requiring surgery and/or life saving treatments.

Have fun this easter but remember not everything we have or do is suitable for your furbabies. If your pets ingest any of the above toxins or you suspect that they may have, call your vet immediately.

🎄With Christmas only a week away, just a reminder of which 'little treats' can cause illness and sometimes fatalities in our four legged friends.

🎅If any of these are consumed by your dogs please contact your vet immediately.

Please be mindful in the hot weather. Even if the suns not shining its still hot outside.

❗️ Heat stroke warning

With temperatures soaring, please be aware of the signs of heat stroke in dogs – thank you to our friends at Vets Now for this handy reminder. Our furry friends can really struggle in the heat, so it is vital we keep them cool in these extreme temperatures 🐕

🐶 Walk in the early morning or later in the evening when it is cooler
💧 Always provide plenty of water
😎 Access to cool and shady areas
❌ Never ever leave your dog in a parked car on a sunny day
☀️ Watch out for the signs of heat stroke and seek veterinary care immediately if you are concerned

If you are due to attend a donation session with us this week, please be mindful of travelling with your dog in the heat. Keep them in an air conditioned car where possible and provide plenty of water. We will continue to review the situation and will ensure we are only running donation sessions if it is safe to do so. As always, the welfare of your dog is our top priority.

Stay cool 🙏

☀️As the weather finally heats up please keep your animals safe

🖐If you can't hold the back or your hand to the floor, it's too hot for your pets paws
🌡Temps from 19 degrees upwards can be dangerous for your animals
🐕Gentle walks in a morning or evening are safer. Missing a few walks is not the end of the world
🚘Leave your pet at home if you can't take them into the place your going
💧Always provide plenty of water, add ice to keep it cool
🥵If you suspect heat stroke call your vet IMMEDIATELY
🥶Do not cold water bath your pet to cool them down, it makes them shiver and can make them hotter and cant put them into shock. Instead provide shade, a cool breeze, a cooling mat or a gentle fan

💡Remember;
❗️Heat stroke DOES kill
❗️Dogs DO die in hot cars

🐾 Last week I visited a lovely pair of German Shephards for a pre Christmas nail trim
🐕 One very large older pooch who isn't fond of his front feet being touched and one very bouncy baby pooch who had never had her nails done before
🦴 All nails trimmed successfully (even if they did go through a whole tin of gravy bones 🤣)

🚶‍♀️Seeing people walking their dogs each day during the hot weather makes me so sad.

🥵 Heat stroke in dogs is real.
🔥 Burnt paws are real and painful.

🌡 If the outside temperature is above 20C or generally hot its not worth it. Even at night or early morning, 20C is still 20C.
🖐 If you can't keep your hand on the floor it's not worth it.

😰 Dogs can't sweat like we do. They can't regulate their temperature like we do.
♨️ Their pads are not heat proof.

🐶 Your fury family members are loyal and if you say walkies they'll get up and they'll go even though they're too hot already and have little energy. It's up to you to not take them.

😧 I've seen far too many dogs suffer in pain as their organs fail and their pads burn through to the soft tissues underneath.

☀️ Please don't put your dogs through it. No dog died from missing a walk but far too many have died from walking in the heat.

This is one thing that really gets to me.
Your dogs do not enjoy the hot weather.
They over heat just as we do but they can't put less layers on, they can't sweat like we do, they can't put shoes on to protect their feet from the pavement.

As blunt as it may be, this post is correct when it says 'my insides are cooking'. That is actually what happens. Their organs over heat and fail but you will not know until its too late because your dog will just go and go to please you until it can't go anymore.

If you MUST walk your dog in this weather, do it early morning before the sun comes up or late at night when it's gone down and only for a very short time.

No dog ever died from not having a walk!
Too many dogs HAVE died from walking in the heat!

I visited the beautiful Belle again this evening to trim her nails. Belle gets quite worried about the whole nail trimming experience but having visited Belle before I knew I wasn't her best friend. I was pleased to see that Belle must have remembered that nothing too bad happens as she was much more relaxed about the whole thing this time around compared to the first time I saw her. She was a super brave girl and I can't wait to see her again. Positive experiences lead to a better relationship 🐾🐕🐶

😷😷😷 Please please please tear the ear loops off your face masks and throw them in the bin.
🦆🐦🦔 Wildlife get themselves stuck in the ear loops. 🐕🐶🐕 Dogs eat them causing a foreign body which can be expensive to remove and potentially fatal.

🔥 Bonfire night is almost upon us and with no displays this year there will be more fireworks than normal being set off locally so protect your pets accordingly.

🎆 Keep your pets indoors except for toilet breaks for dogs. Provide litter trays for cats that usually go outside (these can be filled with grass etc if they are used to being outside rather than litter)
🎆 Make sure dog/cat flaps are locked and doors can't be opened by any houdini's- we've all met one if we haven't got one
🎆 Any rabbits that live outdoors normally, either cover their hutches to block out some of the noise or bring them inside so they can't hear the noise
🎆 Be at home with your pet but stay calm and act as normal. If you are on edge your pet will sense something is wrong which creates their anxiety. Just. Be. Normal. Don't over cuddle or give too much attention as this makes your pet believe that there is something to be scared of. Watch some tele, have a chat, eat your tea, it's just a normal night in for you and your pet
🎆 Make sure there is a safe place for your pet to go. My cat heard a massive bang last night so she ran upstairs and hid under the bed for an hour. She wouldn't come out for anyone so we left her to chill out and she came down. Under the bed is her safe place where she knows she won't get hurt. If they use their safe place, check on them yes to make sure they are okay and are not dithering etc but dont pull them out, don't distress them further, they will come out when they are good and ready.
🎆 Make sure your pets have a form of ID attached. So a collar with a tag AND a microchip. By law dogs have to be microchipped and have to have a collar with a tag any way but if an escape route becomes available and your pet bolts you want whoever finds them to have a way or returning them to you not matter what species they are

🔥 Keep your pets safe over the coming nights as it's only going to get worse. But remember.....JUST BE NORMAL.

🐾For those that are not aware;

💉 Some VNs chose to do extra qualifications, the advanced diploma takes a further 2 and a half years to complete

🐾🐱The power of the microchip🐶🐾

Wonderful News...
18-year-old cat, Oscar reunited with his family after being missing for a year thanks to his up-to-date microchip 🥰♥️🥰

Today we scanned a cat which had been hanging around in a garden for a few weeks - the home owner was worried and determined to gain his trust to be able to help him. Eventually they were able to catch him and brought him to us to check for a chip - thankfully he was chipped and his very surprised and happy family couldn't wait to get him home and safe 😀😍😀

✅ Chip your cats!

🍪🍪A pet owner once said to me during a weight loss clinic 'shes on a diet now, she only has 2 custard creams for breakfast instead of 4' 🤦‍♀️🍪🍪
🐾 The food humans have is much more calorific to our pets than it is to us.
🐾 If you are concerned about your pets weight, call your vets. Veterinary Nurses in particular are very well educated in nutrition and dietary management and can give you any help and advice you need.
💡Wet food is 80% water so you need more of it to provide your pets resting energy requirement 😋
💡Dry food breaks the plaque and tartar off your pets teeth helping to prevent/slow down the onset of dental disease 😬
💡Veterinary diets may seem expensive compared to supermarket or well known brands but due to advanced nutritional content you need to feed less of the veterinary diets making it actually more cost effective 💰 (speak to your veterinary nurses, they'll work it out for you)
💡Too much fat in your pets diet can cause pancreatitis which is painful and expensive to treat usually needing a hospital stay
💡Overweight pets are higher risk if anaesthetics are ever required

🐾This weekend I visited some new babies🐾
🐕 First up was Hugo the beautiful Frenchie and his brother 🐾 Phoenix the guinea pig.
🐈 I also saw Freddie the mad cat too.

🐾Hugo did not approve of his first nail clipping experience whereas Phoenix took it all in his stride. Freddie however is a seasoned pro and although he's not fond of the whole thing he puts up with it🐾

❤️3 very brave babies this weekend❤️

🐾 Your dog will go for a walk regardless. It's up to you to not take them.
🐾 If you can't keep your hand on the pavement then it's too hot for your dog's to walk on. They WILL burn their pads.
🐾 Over heating can cause your dog's to go into multi organ failure. This is painful for them, expensive for you to treat and in some cases can be irreversible and fatal.
💕🐕 Do your fur babies a favour and leave them at home whilst it's hot. Missing walks won't hurt them.
🔥 If you suspect heat stroke or burnt paws call your vet immediately for advice or treatment (note: throwing cold water on to a warm pet can cause shock and shivering which raises their temperature further - call your vet!) 🔥

☀️🐾 Dogs are unable to regulate their temperature as well as us and their paws are like us walking around bare foot 🐾☀️

☀️🐾Please please do not walk your dog's when the weather is like this. Keep them cool and either in the shade in your garden or inside with access to lots of cool water.🐾☀️

**Not having a walk won't kill them but the heat will**

Pet owners have been warned to be extra vigilant.

Tonight I went to see the lovely Bradley to check his nails. Such a beautiful, well behaved little dog 🐕🐾

11/06/2020

I had the pleasure of visiting Luna tonight to trim her nails. Saying she hates the vets and having her claws clipped she was a super brave pooch. A lovely message from her mum to top it off 'Thank you to Cheryl Corless of for cutting Luna's nails. So much easier than going to the vets, less stressful for Luna and less stressful for me. Would definitely recommend Cheryl to anyone.
Luna is now sulking in her crate.

See you next time Luna 🐾🐾💗💗

Lovely weather for a dog walk.
But does your dog agree?

Dogs DO die from heatstroke.
Dogs DON'T die from missing a walk.

If the path is too hot for you to hold your hand on, it's probably too hot for your dog's paws.

Heat stroke in dogs is almost always preventable, but it's critical to know when they're at risk. Our infographic reveals when is it too hot to walk a dog.

💚 Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month 💚

Our job title may be 'Registered Veterinary Nurse' but do people outside the profession know what that means? We are; phlebotomists, radiographers, anaesthetists, wards nurses, lab techs, first aiders (for pets and people), cleaners, poo shifters, dog walkers, nutritionists and the voice and the comfort for your poorly babies whilst they are in hospital with us, amongst 100s of other things.

Many people think we just cuddle fluffy puppies and kittens all day but honestly we wish that was the case. Our job is mentally and physically difficult but none of us would change it for the world. We feel the same emotions as human nurses when you just can't save every patient you spend weeks caring for. We feel the same emotions as human nurses when that patient you didn't think would pull through finally goes home to their family. These are the things I don't think people realise because 'they're just animals' but they are so much more than that.

🐾 If your furry friends are feeling under the weather during the whole coronavirus period then they still need to go to the vets. As mentioned here by Rutland House, many practices now have COVID-19 procedures in place for owners that may have been in contact with the virus or are self isolating. Please make the staff aware when booking your pet in so they can make the correct provisions to keep you, your pet, other clients and the staff safe 🐾

‼️If you think your pet needs to be seen by one of our team, but you maybe at risk of COVID-19 virus infection, or are self isolating, please contact the practice and we can discuss the best option for your pet to ensure they get the right care.‼️
