Are you starting to shop for seeds?

🥦 Hybrid seeds are bred for specific characteristics like smaller growing footprint, resistance to disease, etc. They say F1 (which means “first generation off-spring") on the package and if you save seed from the plants, they will not produce the same quality year over year meaning you need to continually buy new seed. Hybridization is a natural process and it is NOT the same as genetically modified organisms (GMO). An example of a hybrid is the Patio Snacker cucumber. It’s bred to be small and compact while still producing full size cukes, perfect for folks with limited garden space.

🌶 Open pollinated or heirloom seeds produce true to type seeds, so you can save them and plant them the following year and get exactly the same fruit/vegetable. They say OP on the package. All heirloom seeds are open pollinated, but not all open pollinated seeds are heirloom. Many heirloom varieties were once widely available in seed catalogues but fell out of favour for various reasons and have become rare. If you are interested in saving seed, look for OP/heirloom varieties. An example is the Kelsae onion.

Choosing hybrid vs OP seed is a personal choice. Many use a mix of both. Just make sure you are clearly labelling and tracking so you know what seed to save.

Do you have favourite hybrid or heirloom seeds that you love to grow year after year? Let us know your top picks.

Do you eat? You might as well buy local for cheaper than grocery store prices fit considerably better produce.
