Daisy loves running the fence in her yard and barking at things so her people thought of this distraction to use while training engage/disengage. The first stages of teaching a bow. This sweet girl has a goal of asking her big doodle “Who’s the queen?” and he will bow to her. I love their relationship- she loves him so much. We’re working it out on our first try. Training is often about responding to the dogs behavior and altering plans according to their response. It’s always about creating space where a dog has autonomy, providing high value rewards, communicating clearly and having fun!!

I’m so proud of these two. Rolling into the teenage months is a really difficult time for a pet Guardian. Rietta’s impulse control is just like a teenager. She sees something she wants and she’s going for it. She’s learning how to check in with mom instead of pulling impulsively towards something she wants. Being a teenager is so hard!!!!!!

When the puppy you’ve been training with since 8 weeks of age wants to be held but doesn’t realize she’s not a little puppy anymore.
I’ve been having a great time working with this family. I love their dedication to Max and working so hard at helping him be a polite trail hiker.  it has been a challenge for Max because he loves every dog and every person and wants to run up and greet them with abundant adolescent exuberance. For dogs, he specifically targets their head and loves to jump all over their face. I’m so proud of them because Max is learning polite trail etiquette, and is doing an amazing job at learning to disengage and focus on his people while still having fun on the trail.

Rietta does not like getting in the car. I think it’s a big leap for her. We worked on climbing on a box for two days. When she was comfortable with that, we transferred it to the car. She was so successful. No more picking her up or forcing her in, full autonomy, the choice was hers. Starting a puppy early on being comfortable with nail trimming is important for success as they get older. Rietta is 11 weeks old. This is day 6 of desensitizing. I started the first few days with just touching paws and being calm, then we added the sound of the dremel, and today I was able to touch the dremel to her paws. Slow and steady is the key. Notice how I barely touch her nail with the dremel. I’ll add duration overtime as she is comfortable. Taking it slow - Rietta is on her 3rd week of homeschool training. She’s still a little nervous outside but comfortable at the door steps so we trained at her level of comfort today. Great consistency with hand targeting. Training set up and context is so important for a successful training session. If I tried this further away from the door and closer to the street where it’s scary, Rietta would not have been successful. Before you start a training session, think about your set up, your environment, your dogs learning ability, your ability and be realistic about what they can accomplish.

This little 5 mo Portuguese water dog struggles with impulse control and goes 0-60 in seconds. Touching, playing with a toy, leaves blowing in the wind, basically any distraction throws him over threshold immediately. This was such a successful session, combining play with impulse control of drop and waiting to get the toy.
