Building up barking duration whilst having fun in the sun 🥰

We have a thief in the house.
Psyche loves to steal the tv remote (& other things too) We don’t make a drama about it. Instead we allow her to parade with it and then come for cuddles - still holding her prize. Eventually we use what she’s learnt (to let go when asked). She’s given a cue ‘Thanks’ & drops her precious item…. Then to the ‘cookie jar’ for her well deserved reward 🥰

Yes, putting the remote out of reach might be a better option for some & Yes I realise that she’s now linked the ‘theft’ with the game….. but small things & all that ….. 🥰😂

Foundations are so important. They allow for the building of exercises and if done properly, set the dog up to succeed. If they have been set properly we can go back &/or add to them when teaching new exercises or when tweeting things slightly.

This weekend I was at a seminar and the instructor explained (& showed) how his method was used to teach a dog to hold a finger.
So when I had a couple of minutes spare I decided to make an impromptu video of me and Circe…. Could she hold my finger ?… well, she can hold a hot dog so who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️🙄😂
It was interesting g to watch her as she looked directly into my eyes and I swear I heard her whisper ‘really?’ “You really want me to hold your finger?” She reminded me of her mother as she tentatively took hold of my finger 🥰
It isn’t because she’s a super retrieve dog or even super bright, that caused her to quickly understand what was asked. The foundation work meant she understands each step and knows how to progress.
Sometimes ( only sometimes) her good side outshines her naughty side 🥰🥰😃

Lunch time and still a little frost on the ground. I made the most of it and did a very small track. There isn’t a ton of room at work but enough to get approx 100 paces in… better than doing nothing. You can see the track coming back pretty close to the ‘upward’ leg…., as I said, not much room 🤷🏻‍♀️.
Easy to see ( for me and Circe) - That’s fine - IGP Tracking isnt just about nosework 🥰

We have been asked to share the story of Harley in the hope that someone out there might be able to offer her a fabulous new home. We have not met or assessed Harley and are simply advertising her to our network in the hope that someone suitable steps up before the owners are put in a difficult position. They have been looking for a home for a few months but sadly nothing so far. Can you help?

Please let’s do the positive, proactive, constructive thing and share rather than debate, criticise or any other such negative. Positive vibes only for this lass.

We are told that Harley is a one year old Malinois girl, and is very anxious around strangers and will bark and snap. We are told she has never bitten. She needs an experienced home where you have experience and she is definitely NOT a first time dog. She may or may not be full Mali, but she’s a young pup needing help 🧡

She would suit a home with someone who knows the breed well and is able to meet her needs, and who can keep her safe whilst building confidence. She can be stand-offish with other dogs, but given the time snd space, will happily interact and engage - but on her terms. She’s very nervous to begin with and backs away but with a slow, careful introduction she has been ok and played.

The owner tells us that “Harley currently lives with a cat, she chases him a lot but cat does same with her and they play with each other, but obviously Harley is much bigger haha! But no issues.”

We are happy to put you in touch with her owners to discuss further, sadly that’s all we can do right now to help, and she’s in Leeds, West Yorkshire.

We will organise any home check and vetting but we must stress, we don’t know Harley, we are just trying to help this young girl have the future she deserves. Please contact us with your full name, address, telephone number and a brief summary of your breed experience and we will put you in touch.

Please share? She deserves a chance 🧡

Protection Training

Compilation video of Circe’s most recent protection training session. The helper is on the field throughout. The aim of this (&many other) sessions is not about the bite work & it’s not about the precision of the work… it’s about listening skills (I suppose we could call it control) …. Can Circe listen to my requests… lts also about her being in the right mindset…you’ll see sometimes I just stand her and stroke her calmly.
The work went on for some time and the helper has to be super vigilant at all times as sometimes I’m working close to him and sometimes at a distance… I will send my dog at any time.
As usual Alison is there to make sure I don’t fall into my predictable ways 🙄😂😂…
Thanks Jamie Bows for the super work 😃

I originally posted this in April but the work from the video is much older
Psyche - the most possessive of my 2 as a puppy and She also showed some resource guarding too.
Early on I decided to teach the out using a different method…
The dog’s mindset, again played a huge part. She needed to learn that I wasn’t going to steal HER toys….

Anyway, back to the video.
When she was a couple of months old I taught her ‘catch’…. I wasn’t actually interested in whether she could catch it- I wanted her to learn to open those jaws quickly…. I tell all my students ‘
Practice makes permanent, only perfect practice makes perfect’ & that’s what I wants…. Practice, practice and practice - opening your jaws quickly. I put a cue on it - No, not catch…. I named it
‘THANKS’

My garden needs training !!

In the garden the other day I was busily removing some unwanted plants…. trying to eradicate the ‘lily of the valley’. The flowers may appear pretty but as it’s poisonous to my dogs it had to go…. And not just the surface flowers…. All of it…. Roots and all.
I dug seep and took hold of the roots; I pulled and gently teased.
I knew if I pulled out chunks or used a spade and ripped the roots my problems plant wouldn’t disappear. Yes, I would stop that year’s flowers but sure enough those left over roots would spring into life and there would eventually be new growth.
I had to make sure every bit of the root was found and ousted if I was to make my garden ‘poison plant free’. Once the villan has gone I can set to making the garden beautiful again… New ‘wanted’ plants can be added, watered and cared for. Soon I’m hoping my garden will look lovely but I know gardening is never ending & each year it will need fussing over.
I realised that much of my dog training is the same. My students might tell me they have a heelwork problem or a positions problem or maybe their retrieve isn’t fast enough. Often I don’t change the heelwork, I don’t address the positions and the retrieve isn’t a problem after all….. I try to look at the root cause…. Is the dog focussed and engaged, can it deal with frustration, does it enjoy the training, what are its listening skills like….. ?
A ‘lateral - thinking outside the box’ approach is how I like to work with my students. I like to look at the relationship, the mindset of dog and human. Yes, of course there is an element of teaching new exercises & revisiting old… I might tweak the hide work, I might proof the heelwork or I might re-adjust the sit at heel.
Like my gardening skills, my dog training needs constant attention and not just the surface work but the root cause too.

Psyche…. She’s so naughty… 🤔she loves to steal the doorstop to the bathroom 🙄 that then causes a problem when the door closes and little girl is stuck on the inside😳
I thought I’d try to teach her to open the door herself instead of insisting (barking) that someone comes and saves her 🤷🏻‍♀️
I didn’t plan on her getting smacked in the face but I think she coped ok 😂🥰
It’s a long video…. Just go to the last 30 seconds to see her being ‘attacked’ by the door 😳🤷🏻‍♀️🤣

Stand in Motion…..
Stupidly 🙄 I haven’t taught this yet…. I Thought it was about time we made a start.
IGP3 - Stand in motion will be done from fast heelwork… it needs to be sharp.
Today I started playing around with the process
Lots of work to do 😳😂😂
