Here's our first little sweetheart needing a safe home.

She's Flo and here is what her guardian has to say about this wee girl:

"Meet Flo - an 16-18 month year old female heading dog cross. She was born and bred on the Chatham Islands. Gotten as a working dog - she has never worked due to being weary of sheep and cattle. She is an escape artist so unfortunately has been kept on a chain, and hasn't experienced much of the pet life.

I have met her recently and been taking her for walks regularly. She's really loving and gentle, sticks by your side when walking, adventurous, athletic and smart. She doesn't really know any commands, but does come to her name & listens carefully when you talk so would be easy to train. Rolls over at your feet usually.

Surprisingly walks well on leash. Good with other dogs. Okay with cats (I think based on the one cat here). Unlikely good with chickens. Has not been around kids. Can be a bit scared of cars she doesn't know.

Needs: an active and dog experienced home, and will need lots of company and entertainment, especially as she's getting used to pet life. She would be fine as an outside dog if she had a run, but would LOVE to be an inside dog I'm sure. I think the escaping would stop if she had a home and wasn't in a kennel/on a chain.

Please contact me for any questions. 021837019
Not spayed

Free to a good home, would just need picking up from Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch."

Pet flippers/bad actors need not apply. We have promised her current keeper we will ensure that the only enquiries are genuine and safe.

Here's another cute trick for busting scammers/bad actors.

Ask for their address, and then Google it. So now you have a street view.

Then you can go to Core Logic/Terranet and join. Then you can search for the name of the person offering the dog/pup as a property owner and for as little as $4.50 you can save yourself an awful lot of grief!

This is also invaluable if someone wants to adopt your dog and they don't in fact own the property or have their landlord's permission to have a dog there.

Here's another 'how to' dealing with scammers.

They come on to sites like ours right here saying "hey, I have a litter of puppies! Click this link!" Don't click that link.

Answer them on the page here and PM them. Ask for their I.D. and that shouldn't be a problem. Just a scan of their name and address from their power bill or rates bill or the like. Ask who their vet is. Ring their vet!

NEVER agree to pay a penny until you know they are who they say they are and you have physically seen that dog. If they're posting here and giving you the run-around and we haven't decapitated them already let us know immediately and we'll sort it for you.

You just want to adopt a four-legged family member, right? How hard can that be in little old New Zealand.

Pet scams have been around a long time and they vary in their degrees of sophistication. And being down here in NZ is no protection. They'll pretend to be in Taihape when in fact they're in Nigeria. Their phone number will even look right.

Watch this for a good sense of how such criminals take advantage of us softee pet lovers who might also just be a tad naive:
