"Honey Bun came to us as a stray on 11/13/23. She tested well with other dogs and is very loving towards people so she quickly made her way to the adoption floor. However, she has increasingly become barrier reactive to other dogs as she walks past their kennels and she failed a dog meet with a potential adopter so she appears to be dog selective. She now needs a rescue pull as her barrier aggression makes her a bite risk. Honey Bun is a 2 year old Chow that weighs 48lbs."

We just want to make sure that at the end of it, the dog or cat gets the loving home he/she deserves, not taken back to Animal Services because everything wasn't thought through and it has nowhere to go.
If you can't help by adopting one of these fantastic dogs or cats, you can also pledge to help with money for a rescue to help cover the cost of the medical necessities for the dog/cat. Pledges help to fund the efforts of rescues who are already cash-strapped. To make a pledge, post it in the thread of the dog/cat that you are wanting to help and we will track it. BERNARD THE ELF: Bernard’s Bio:
He came in the shelter as a stray and was held there 5 days. He was unaltered at the time and was neutered prior to coming to rescue. He has not enjoyed that at all, he tries to lick and bite at incision area when given the chance so he earned an e collar.
He is approx 5 years old
Heartworm negative
Had intestinal parasites that have been treated.
Microchipped
Fully vaccinated
Temperament: aloof and sweet. A true chow personality. He doesn’t get excited for much. He is agreeable with almost everything, but since being neutered, he has not appreciated being picked up.
He has ignored cats.
He will ignore dogs, but will do best with submissive dogs. Tested with a hyper dog that barked a lot and he growled at him, but did not offer to attack.
Would do best in a chow savvy home with older kids. I think he would be good with gentle small kids, but I would not want to risk it. I don’t think he would enjoy being tugged on or having his tail pulled.
He does great for car rides
Eats well, not food aggressive. Does not inhale his food, leaves some for later and does not sn**ch food. Not a barker.

Charlie is a darling, sweet boy. He was said to be chow/lab, but we think maybe some shepherd. He is a long legged boy of about 4 1/2 yo. Charlie lead a life of abuse before he came to us. He is the gentlest of guys, with an awesome smile too! He is great with most dogs and cats. Charlie needs a home where there is no loud voices that he thinks is directed at him and someone patient enough to let him learn a new routine and let his wonderful personality shine through.

SASHA: This 6 year old girl needs a quiet home. The home she is currently in loves her very much but is active with 5 children, a few other dogs and several cats. She needs to be an only dog in a house with no cats or small children. She does have entropian which owners are not in a position to fix at this time. She is fixed, up to date, and on heartworm prevention. I think getting the entropian fixed will be the first step to helping this girls mood. She is free but you must complete and be approved through this rescue to meet Sasha.

Pepper Jack is quite the loving boy and is just over 1 yo. He loves everyone he meets! He's a big boy, so no small children, as he doesn't realize they are small. We are still working on his confidence with other dogs. He suffered some trauma in his previous home, where they used a prong collar on him and he is doing well with having a collar on and walking on a leash, but sometimes becomes fearful. He does walk great with a harness though.

Simon was guesstimated to be 2 yo at the shelter, but we are guessing he is younger, as he still has a lot of pup in him. Simon is an all around great boy! He does great with other dogs, older kids, and cats! We would recommend no young children. He loves his toys, but will also steal the kid's toys to chew on too. He knows many commands and loves to play ball and will return it to you.

Shadow is a sweet 3 yo AKC blue male. He can take a few minutes to warm up, especially to men and adores women. He is the sweetest snuggle bug. Shadow has gotten along great with the females here and with proper intro, some of the males. Does do ok with cats.

Charlie - This sweet boy came to us as an owner surrender extremely under-socialized, almost to the point of being feral. Charlie wouldn’t let anyone touch him. With time, patience, structure, and love, he has made huge improvements. He is still very shy and withdrawn when meeting new people, so he will need a very patient and understanding owner in a quiet and calm environment. No young children or people frequently coming and going. Once he learns he is safe, he loves to roll over for belly rubs and to run and play. He would do best with a confident doggy friend who will play with him and help bring him out of his shell. He actually has become best friends with another of our adoptable dogs, Loki! Charlie is 3 years old, around 50lbs, and is being fostered about a half hour north of Houston.

Loki is another owner surrender who was very under-socialized as a puppy. He only knew his elderly owner for the first year of his life. When she could no longer care for him, he went to a family member with small children. Not ever seeing small children before, Loki was scared and growled. They reached out to us to take him in, and boy are we glad they did. This handsome boy has been introduced to new people and places over the course of his time with us. He does growl when he is scared or unsure; he tries to hide or run away from whatever it is he is scared of. Once he learns that he is safe, he is the happiest boy wagging his tail and asking for pets! He likes to lean into you for butt scratches, too! He does great with docile dogs who aren’t pushy or overbearing. He's actually become best friends with another of our adoptable pups, Charlie! Loki is a gentle soul who needs a patient owner willing to give him time to figure things out and learn that he is safe. Loki is about 2 years old and weighs 50 lbs. He is being fostered about a half hour north of Houston.

Athena was found as a stray wandering the streets of Houston. She was severely underweight with a nasty skin infection when we scooped her up. She came to us not knowing how to go potty anywhere but the inside of her crate. With a lot of love and work from our behaviorist, she has finally figured how to go outside and keep her crate clean! Athena is approximately 11 months old, 45lbs, and obviously has had no socialization prior to now. She does have some food aggression tendencies with people, which makes sense since she was starved when we got her. She is getting a lot of work and attention and will need an adopter to continue her training and socialization. NO young children. Athena is learning how to play well with other dogs and would do well with a confident friend.

TEDDY: Hi, I'm Teddy! I'm a 4 year old tan chow chow mix who was surrenderd by my owner because they couldn't afford to own a pet. I'm super soft and fluffy, just like a teddy bear. I also have a super cool blue tongue.I am neutered and just had shots in October to kill my heartworms.

I need a slow introduction to other pets. I get along really well with my foster dog sister. I co-exist with my foster cat brother. I like to chase the cat, which the cat doesn't like.

I just started learning how to play! I love to play with my foster dog sister 1 - 2 times a day. The rest of the day I sleep. I also love to shake toys and chew on bones. I never chew on human things. I get tired pretty quickly and stay calm throughout the day. I wait by the door when I need to go outside. I don't bark. I'm calm when visitors come over. I like to be pet and have my belly rubbed. I have a few skin tags/moles, but my fur is growing back thick and you can hardly notice them! They don't bother me one bit. I weigh about 50 lbs and am medium sized.

I would love to come home with you for the holidays!

BILL: At first we thought this handsome man was a pure bred but we did a DNA test and the results were 75% Chow, 12.5% AST and 12.5% Asian Breed! Bill is a friendly 1 year old boy who has come a long way thanks to his foster family! He had his booster shots and has been continuing to learn house and doggie manners. This boy will make a very stunning addition to any family and is now ready for his forever home. Thanks to his loving foster dad, he is ready to become a part of a forever family. According to his foster, Bill is described as a smooth coat black chow, under 2 years old with lots of energy. They would not recommend a home with small kids due to his high energy level. Bill has NOT been cat tested. He shows no aggression, but is hesitant of other dogs, and he will run and hide. He could be okay with slow introductions that don't overwhelm him. Walks well on a leash, but only after the first few minutes of zig zagging from excitement. He likes to ride, but is still learning how to jump into the car. We believe Bill would do best in a home with no cats or small children.

Milo came to us from a well meaning owner who had never owned a Chow before and wasn't quite prepared for what that entails. He is about 2 years old and 55lbs. He was only with his previous owner for a couple of weeks, but during that time he displayed protective/guarding tendencies (growling/snarling at strangers who approached the family). Milo snapped at a young child in the home (who was described as high energy), so we do recommend no children. Milo is a happy boy who is basically a young, high energy puppy in the body of a 50+lb adult dog. He has been working hard with our behaviorist to learn manners. He is a smart boy, but he gets distracted very easily! Milo will need a savvy owner who can dedicate time, structure, and patience toward helping him be the best dog he can be. He is being fostered about a half hour north of Houston.

Navi is a smart, stunning chow who recently joined us after her owner could no longer care for her. She is 5 years old and weighs about 50lbs. Navi is extremely dog selective and has a high prey drive, so we are requiring her to go to a home with no other animals. She was very scared when she first came to us, but within a few weeks, she really blossomed and came out of her shell. She is very playful and sweet with people now and likes to play bow!

Finneas - Tagged as the friendliest little dude ever! Approx 2 years old and about 45 lbs.

He’s still got allot of puppy in him, very energetic and loves to run and jump around. Very sweet and loving. Wants to be with his human. He will sit at your feet and just look up at you with those sweetheart brown eyes and lean in for hugs!

So far he is getting along with his foster housemate! He is house and crate trained. He likes to go for car rides however hold on tight because he does try and bolt so he will still need to be worked with on some of those basic training behaviors.

He has been tested with the neighborhood children so appears to like children.

His foster mom can't say enough great things about him! Great family dog for sure!

SEBASTIAN: Sebastian came to our shelter by way of our friends at Baldwin County Animal Control in Georgia. He ended up at the shelter when his owner passed away suddenly. Sebastian is about 2-3 years old and weighs about 50 lbs.

Sebastian was frightened by new people when he first arrived at our shelter. We have been working with him and he has made vast improvements. He now wags his tail when meeting new folks!

Sebastian needs an adult home with Chow or like breed experience. NO exceptions. NO cats or livestock for Sebastian!

Sebastian is neutered and vaccinated for Rabies, Distemper, and Bordetella. He tested negative for heartworm and is current on flea/tick and heartworm prevention too. Sebastian is also microchipped with a lifetime registration.

Robbie - This handsome guy is about 1.5 years old, 58 lbs and came to us as a stray. It’s clear that Robbie was not socialized properly as a pup. He gets very overstimulated when meeting people for the first time and can be a bit intimidating while doing so. Once you get past the initial meeting and he learns you are safe, Robbie is such a wonderful dog. He loves to run and play and get pets! He is a fence fighter, another sign of over-stimulation - meaning he tends to run up and down the fence or other boundary marker barking at passers by. He would do best in a calm, Chow savvy home with structure, continued training, consistency, and no children. He is also dog friendly.

Nala (6 year-old female) and Simba (7 year-old male) came in the Oklahoma shelter together. Simba was very shut down at the shelter, growling at the staff and not letting anyone touch him. After two days in his foster home, he became a whole new dog! He now loves pets and being brushed. Nala is very shy and withdrawn. She is avoiding contact so far, so we are giving her time to decompress and settle in. Both love to play in the snow. These two are a bonded pair, and we would love to see them be adopted together.
