APOH Christmas 2024
Christmas is an opportunity to give thanks for the love, hope and joy we have received throughout the year. As we celebrate with our loved ones (furry and human), it is out of remembrance of the gift God gave us. The gift that we are loved, are never alone and have hope for the future. These are the same gifts that we wish for every dog that comes through our door all year long.
Each one of the dogs in this video has a story of love. They have all been blessed with families and homes, good food, soft beds, and cuddles and kisses from people who care for them. This Christmas we celebrate them, but we also remember those dogs who aren't as lucky. We hope that as we move towards the new year, our faith in our mission will be renewed and we will continue to see more happy faces, safe and loved, like each one of the dogs featured here. It is the greatest gift we can receive as rescuers.
Merry Christmas to all of our volunteers, our adopters, and our supporters! None of this happens without you! 🎄

PEACHES is HOME ❤️ We had a pupdate planned for today but everyone loves a successful dog recovery story! We wanted to share the details and give a huge thanks to all of you who shared Peaches' lost dog posts, went out looking for her, contacted the owner with sightings, and generally supported the efforts.
Thanks to all of the reported sightings, we had pinpointed a location, a permanently closed business, where she had been staying in a breezeway and had been seen several times. We had her owner put a blanket and food there and were working on a plan to secure the fence (there were several spots that she could easily go in and out) so we could go in and get her.
We were a little nervous because we had seen her at that same place Saturday afternoon, but she took off when she realized that we spotted her and we lost sight of her. We were also concerned that she had crossed Barrancas, but this morning one of our volunteers, who lives right down the street, saw her again in the exact same location. We were getting ready to head down there when the owner got several calls that she had been seen at Sanders Beach and then another call that she was at the Yacht Club. Our volunteer, Sherri, immediately went to the Yacht Club. When she got there, Peaches went on a dock and two guys ran to it and started walking towards her and blocked her. Our volunteer and another lady who was there with a leash got behind them to kind of form a wall if she chose to run. They all stooped down and the guys slowly approached her when she got to the end of the dock. They got close enough to put a leash around her, passed her off to Sherri and the owner went to Sherri's house to pick her up! She was so excited to see Mom (even though she ran right by her on Saturday) and she wiggled and whined and wagged her tail like crazy. She doesn't seem to be hurt, she's just absolutely exhausted and a little hungry! We did not get the names of the people who called her owner or both of the gentlem
Pupdate! We think Thumbelina's Mom may need an intervention! This dog has a wardrobe better than most people we know! Thumbelina came to us a little over a year ago....a rambunctious 2 pound Pomeranian puppy with a congenital heart defect. Our vet and local cardiologist suggested heart surgery for her. Without it she probably wouldn't have lived past her first birthday. Even with the surgery she was not expected to live a very long life but her mom wanted to do everything she could to give her a chance. Thumbelina's surgery was successfully performed at LSU and she is still going strong as one of the most loved and spoiled little dogs! She goes everywhere with her mom and everyone wants to love on her!
"She just had her 6 month cardiology appt and even through her heart is still enlarged, she’s not symptomatic and there is no change which is great. In February she will be celebrating her 2nd Birthday! She has lived longer than the specialists expected already. We enjoy every day and don’t dwell on the shortened life span that she may have."
Pupdate! We wanted to share a hi from Puddin'! She is a happy little girl! Mom says she's doing great and the last burn has completely closed up!!! She is loving her new home, bugs her fursiblings to play with her and her tail is always wagging!
It was so worth it- the money, the procedures, the feeding tube, her ruptured eye, the times we thought she might not make it, the tears, the time, the work our vet team put into researching options and doing treatments, the vet visits back and forth, the innumerable bandage changes...all worth it to see this. ❤️❤️❤️
