"She didn’t block the way, didn’t make a sound—she was simply invisible. Behind bars, a small silhouette listening for footsteps instead of searching for faces. When someone passed, she lifted her head as if to say, “I’m here.” And still, everyone kept walking.

Born blind, she had never seen the world—only smelled it, heard it, felt it. Her cage was an archive of sounds: keys clinking, jackets rustling, voices softening for a moment and then hardening again. I arrived with no plan, just that pressure behind the breastbone that drives me into shelters. Before I saw her, I heard her soft snuffle—carefully testing the air.

I knelt and said nothing. She found my hand, not my eyes. Warm weight against my fingers, a sigh longer than a breath. In that moment I knew my fear—wrong care, not knowing, doubt—was smaller than her trust.

At home, our exploration began. Furniture became outlines I arranged for her. My voice became her handrail. Two steps, stop. Three steps, treat. The garden smelled of rain and soil; that was her compass. Sometimes she bumped into things, paused, listened. I waited until her courage rose again like a quiet melody.

Her first “jump” onto the sofa wasn’t a jump—it was a triumph. I laughed; she wiggled her whole body as if she’d summited a peak. Later she ran across the lawn—not fast, but free—and my throat tightened. She saw nothing, yet found everything that mattered.

Today she recognizes me by the sound my keys make before I touch the door. She senses my tiredness before I admit it and rests her head on my knee, as if asking the world to be still. She is different, some say. I say: she is complete—in her way.

A disability isn’t a label that explains who you are. It’s another path through the same forest. Anyone who looks away from animals because they’re not “perfect” misses the best lessons: patience, gratitude, loyalty without conditions. I’ll never understand how a life can be discarded because it doesn’t fit an image. In her awkward turns, in the way she finds me by scent, in that oversized heart—there is more grace than any camera can capture.

She doesn’t know the world’s colors. But she knows its temperatures. She hears the smile in my voice. She smells summer long before it arrives. And me? I’m learning to see differently. Maybe she isn’t just my dog. Maybe she’s the lamp you only notice when it’s dark—and then she lights everything up."

Pupdate! Bucky is an adorable Biewer Terrier puppy who was surrendered to us with his mama and littermates. He was born the day before he came into rescue so we've known him his whole life, minus the first 24 hours!

Bucky was adopted by a family very well known to us. They have adopted three times before and board with Francine when they go out of town. They spotted Bucky when they came to pick up their dogs after a trip and they were hooked. Who can blame them? Look at that adorable puppy dog face!

Bucky has a loving family that includes fur brothers, Barney and Tucker, who have different ways of dealing with their new puppy sibling. Mom says sweet Barney is scared to fuss at him but Tucker keeps him in line. Their home is certainly more lively with Bucky around!

"I feel like I have a newborn… He’s funny… smart and stubborn as hell! He's a doll!"

BANDIT is an 8-year-old, 11.4 pound Papillon mix with an easygoing personality. He was adopted from us a few years ago and recently returned because his owner is going into an assisted living facility.

BANDIT is friendly with everyone he meets, adores being on a lap, gives endless kisses, and is the perfect companion and snuggle buddy. He has some separation anxiety and will not be happy in a home where he spends too many hours alone.

BANDIT gets along well with other dogs and enjoys their company. He could be ok as an only dog, but he’s a pretty active boy who likes running and playing around with other dogs. He’ll play with toys here and there, but his dog friends are his favorite. He hasn’t been around cats or kids, but we think he would be fine with older children.

BANDIT is fully housebroken and lets his foster mom know when he needs to go out. He walks nicely on a leash, but a fenced yard would make his little heart happiest. He loves to sunbathe, enjoys going on walks, and has a great time socializing with his doggy friends at the dog park.

At night, BANDIT sleeps in the bed by his foster mom’s side. He knows his name, wags his tail when called, and sulked all day after being left at the vet for his dental, until bedtime, when he was thrilled to soak up some affection!

BANDIT has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, neutered, just had a dental, is heartworm negative, has had a ProHeart 12 heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration.

HARDEE is a 3-year-old, 17.2 pound Chihuahua mix who has overcome a rough start in life to blossom into a sweet, affectionate companion. Abandoned by a homeless person and left to survive alone on the streets, HARDEE’s early days were filled with uncertainty, and likely abuse. He still flinches if approached too quickly, especially with fast movements around his head, but once he trusts you, HARDEE is all heart.

This adorable little guy loves to snuggle in blankets, sit in laps, learn new things, and soak up affection. HARDEE is a kissy, cuddly lovebug who just wants to feel safe and adored. He can still be nervous around strangers and visitors, so slow introductions and a calm, confident owner are essential. He needs someone who will help him feel secure and gently guide him when he’s feeling anxious or protective.

HARDEE should not be placed in a home with children because they can move quickly and unpredictably, and he generally doesn’t do well with male dogs. However, he enjoys the company of female dogs his size and would love a dog buddy to play with. He’s playful and full of personality and loves tug-of-war, hide-and-seek, zoomies, and going on walks. He loves to go on runs with his family, too.

He’s 100% housebroken and a fenced yard is a must. At night, HARDEE either sleeps in his own bed or curled up in the big bed with his foster family. He never misses a chance for a warm “good morning” snuggle.

HARDEE has had a rough journey, but he’s ready to shower the right person with love and loyalty. If you’re experienced, patient, and ready to offer a safe, stable home, HARDEE is waiting to love you with his whole heart.

HARDEE has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, neutered, f***l tested, heartworm negative, has had a 12-month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot and is microchipped with a lifetime registration.

Pupdate! Lola came to us as an owner surrender and very quickly found her new home with a wonderful family. She got two new fur siblings and a loving mom and dad. She's doing so well and we thank them for giving her the best home!

"I wanted to let you know that Lola (Adele) is fitting in just fine!! She is the sweetest, cuddly dog, and has picked up her new routine perfectly. She loves to play with her toys and run around the yard with our other pups! She is so smart too - sits by the door when she’s ready to go potty and loves to come inside and sit for a treat."

🐾 Found a Stray Dog? Here’s What to Do! 🐾

There are so many dogs on the streets, and it’s wonderful when caring people step up to help! But once you’ve found a stray, what’s next? Here are some important steps to follow:

1. Don’t assume neglect. Not all stray dogs have bad owners. Some may have been recently rescued, lost for a while, or suffering from an unseen condition. *You cannot rehome a dog until the required stray hold period has been completed.*

2. Contain the dog safely. Use a secure space like a fenced yard, garage, or bathroom to keep the dog contained and safe.

3. Check for tags or ID. Look for any collar information. If there’s a phone number, call and leave a message and send a text, since many people don’t answer unknown calls.

4. Scan for a microchip right away. Take the dog to any vet clinic or animal shelter, they’ll scan for free! If the chip is registered, they can contact the owner immediately. (This may be the quickest way to help reunite a dog with its owner!)

5. Post online and report to the shelter. Upload a clear photo on lost and found pet sites and file a found dog report with your local shelter. Don’t include the dog’s s*x, this detail can help verify true ownership later.

6. Spread the word. Share on neighborhood apps like Nextdoor, local Facebook groups, the Ring app, and talk to your neighbors.

7. If you can’t foster the dog:

• Contact local rescues or the animal shelter in the county where you found them.

• If someone else offers to hold the dog, be sure to get their full name, phone number, and address.

• Keep your online posts active so the owner knows where to reach you or the temporary caregiver.

8. Verify ownership. If someone claims the dog, ask for proof such as vet records or photos showing them with the dog.

Remember: Every lost dog has a story and every effort you make helps them get one step closer to home!

*LOCAL ADOPTION ONLY*
RAYNA is a beautiful 1½-year-old, 9-pound Shih Tzu who was a scared stray fending for herself (for at least two months) before being brought into rescue. She was afraid at first, but within just a day or two, her sweet and loving personality began to shine through. Now she’s the most affectionate little girl who adores attention, cuddles, and being close to her person.

RAYNA can be a bit alpha and will fuss if another dog bothers her, but we believe a home with another dog is needed. She would do best with a slightly larger, calm dog who won’t challenge her. She hasn’t been tested with children, but we think she’d do fine with kids age 10 and up. Because of her prey drive, she should not be in a home with farm animals, cats, or other small critters.

RAYNA has plenty of energy and loves to run, play, and do zoomies around the yard! Because she’s a talented escape artist — she can climb, jump, and even dig — a secure 6-foot privacy fence is absolutely required. Please don’t ask if an exception can be made; her safety depends on it. She isn’t completely housebroken yet, but she’s learning quickly and usually uses the doggie door to go outside.

RAYNA is happiest snuggled up in bed at night, head resting on your shoulder, giving kisses and rubbing her head against you to show her love. She enjoys toys, chasing a ball, and going for walks. She also rides beautifully in the car and would love to accompany her person everywhere, as long as she’s in a secure harness and leash.

RAYNA has the most soulful eyes and a heart full of love. Once she knows she’s safe, she will devote herself completely to her person. This little survivor will make someone a truly wonderful companion.

RAYNA has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, spayed, heartworm negative, has had a ProHeart 12 heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration.

12/11/2025

ROSCO is an adorable 6-year-old, 10.5 pound Chihuahua with a big heart who’s searching for a patient, loving family to help him blossom into the confident companion he’s meant to be.

ROSCO truly wants to bond with his person, but he needs a little time and understanding to feel safe. Once he trusts you, he becomes a sweet, snuggly buddy who loves curling up beside you, or even better, right in your arms. Once he begins to feel at home, you’ll see his personality shine through, especially when he starts wagging his curly tail in excitement or when he gently bumps your leg with his nose to say hello. He does howl and bark a bit when his foster family leaves, but he settles down with time.

In his foster home, ROSCO has shown some space-claiming tendencies with male dogs, so he may do best alongside a calm, slightly bigger female dog who won't be afraid to stand her ground, or as the only pup in the home, where he can soak up all the affection himself. He is not suited for a home with children, as he needs a calmer environment to feel secure and we don't know how he would be with cats.

ROSCO is still working on potty training and does well with frequent trips outside, where he also enjoys barking at the squirrels who dare cross his path. He knows his name and responds when called, which makes training that much easier. He isn’t quite ready for leash walks yet, so a fenced yard is a must to keep him safe as he continues to build confidence. At first, he wasn’t so sure about toys, but now he’s discovered how much joy they bring and he loves them.

At bedtime, ROSCO is happy sleeping in a dog bed close to his family, and he adores burrowing under soft blankets or snoozing on his back with his belly in the air.

ROSCO has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, neutered, heartworm negative, has had a 12-month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot and is microchipped with a lifetime registration.

In Loving Memory 💔

Buddy was adopted in 2022 after being owner surrendered. He was a senior special needs dog who found a family who completely devoted themselves to him and his needs. Mom and Dad did the best they could for him but sadly had to let him go last week. Buddy left this world surrounded by the people who loved him most, knowing he was cherished every single day. He will always be remembered for his gentle spirit and the love he brought to his family. Rest easy, sweet Buddy.

"When we first got Buddy we could not hold him but a few minutes before he started howling and wanted down. Then I started holding him and giving him chicken snacks that I cooked for him. So over time he let us hold and snuggle him a lot longer. He was our special needs Chi Chi that we loved and took care of the best that we could. He will definitely be missed."

TOBY MAC is the most precious Moyen Poodle you’re ever going to meet! He’ll turn three years old on December 5th, and he weighs just under 21 pounds.

TOBY MAC is a friendly bundle of energy who loves everyone he meets, but is especially devoted to his lucky person. He bonds deeply and sometimes struggles with boundaries (he's definitely a lap dog!), but it’s all rooted in love and loyalty. He’s a joyful jumper who greets his people with happy hops. We’re working on helping him calm that enthusiasm, but when he sees you, he’s just so excited he can hardly contain himself. He is not the kind of dog who will be happy spending hours away from his person.

TOBY MAC is smart, athletic, and determined. He is housebroken and can clear a chain-link fence or baby gate without hesitation, and will if his person is not with him. Because of that, a very secure, fully enclosed, privacy-fenced yard is absolutely required. No exceptions.

TOBY MAC is happy, playful, and loves to do zoomies, in the yard or right through the house (he’s not picky!). He’s recently discovered how much fun toys are and isn’t above snatching one from another dog mid-run.

Speaking of other dogs, TOBY MAC will do best with another playful dog in the home, ideally between 15–30 pounds, big enough to keep up with his energy but not so small that he bowls them over in excitement. Because of his exuberant nature, he’s not a good match for small children who might accidentally get knocked down in his joy. We do not know how he would be with cats.

TOBY MAC sleeps at the foot of the bed but likes to come up for a few nighttime snuggles. He’s not a bit kisser, but when he presses his nose gently against yours and looks right into your soul, you’ll know he loves you.

TOBY MAC is incredibly smart and trainable, and a training class would be wonderful for him (and fun for you!). With structure, attention, and lots of love, this special boy will grow into one of the best companions you could ever ask for.

TOBY MAC is neutered, up to date on shots, heartworm negative, has had a ProHeart 12 heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration.

Everyone has the option to choose adoption

A Place of Hope Small Dog Rescue (formerly Flori Bama Small Breed Rescue) is a nonprofit small dog rescue located in the Pensacola, Florida area. We are foster based which means all of our dogs are kept in private homes through adoption. We do not have a facility. The advantage of a foster-based rescue is that we are able to observe and interact with the dogs in a home environment and learn what type of home they are best suited for based on their individual personalities and needs. We specialize in small breeds and the majority of our dogs are 15 pounds and under. We rescue and rehome shelter dogs, stray dogs, and owner surrendered dogs. All different breeds and ages come through our doors! We make sure they receive a full check up at the vet, are up to date on shots, rabies vaccinated, heartworm tested and on prevention, parasite tested and treated, spayed and neutered, and microchipped with a lifetime registration. We also take care of any other medical care necessary while they are with us, such as dentals, eye, ear, and skin infections, tumor removals, etc. We hold weekly adoption events in Pensacola and also do one-on-one meet and greets with approved applications. Our adoption process includes an adoption application, a vet reference, and a home check. Our adoption fees range from $200-350 and we adopt most dogs within a two hour driving radius from Pensacola. Longer distance applications may be considered on a case by case basis. Puppies stay local (within an hour drive of Pensacola) to ensure they get all sets of puppy shots and their spay/neuter and rabies vaccine when they are old enough. We are not a “first come, first served” rescue. We work hard to match a dog to the applicant that best fits a dog’s individual personality and needs. We make a promise to each dog who comes through our rescue that we will find it the best furever home. They came to rescue for a reason. As their advocates we try to make sure they leave us to become happy, well-cared for, and loved members of a new family!
