SMILEY is a sweet 12 year old, 8.2 pound Yorkie. He was first seen running around a neighborhood as a stray and was finally able to be caught. No one claimed him so he came to us.

SMILEY is the sweetest little senior boy. He just wants a lap and someone to love him. He gives lots of kisses once he is comfortable with you and is a big snuggle bug. He loves to lie in a lap while watching TV and he loves to be brushed. He will greet you at the door with his little nubby tail wagging like crazy!

SMILEY doesn't interact with the dogs in his foster home. He would be fine in a home with other dogs or as an only as long as he gets lots of attention from his person. He will not be a good fit in a home with a younger or bigger bouncy dog. He is not a fan of the cat in his foster home and won't be a good fit for kids.

SMILEY has not had any potty accidents in the house. He will sometimes go to the door and let you know he needs to go out. He walks well on a leash. Because of his size and his age and the fact that he was found as a stray, we are requiring a home with a secure fenced yard.

At night, SMILEY sleeps snuggled in bed with his foster family.

SMILEY has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, neutered, had a dental, is heartworm negative, has had a 12-month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration. He is mostly deaf but can hear some loud, higher pitched sounds. When he came in he had a mass on his bottom removed. It was determined to be cancerous and we did get it all but there is a possibility it could return.

To meet SMILEY please submit an online adoption application using this link https://form.jotform.com/232395363383057 or by visiting our website www.aplaceofhoperescue.com and filling out an application on our application page. Submission of an application does not obligate you to adopt or guarantee approval.

NICKY is a gorgeous, playful 2 year old, 10.8 Maltese who was found as a stray. He was microchipped and the registered owner was contacted and they surrendered him to find a new home.

NICKY is a very sweet boy who needs someone to give him lots of love and attention. He follows his foster mom everywhere she goes and sometimes gives kisses. He is more comfortable around women and initially timid around men. He will probably be best in a home without younger, active kids but would be okay with older kids who are familiar with small dogs.

NICKY is good with other dogs and loves to play with them. He would be so happy in a home with another small playful dog to be his best friend! He still has puppy energy and enjoys running around the backyard and wrestling with his doggy friends. He has not been around cats.

NICKY is not leash trained and needs a home with a secure fenced yard. His foster mom is working with him on potty training. He does have accidents and he will need someone to continue working with him.

At night, sweet NICKY sleeps in the bed with his foster family. He will sleep in a dog bed if preferred but he would rather be with his person.

NICKY has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, neutered, heartworm negative, has had a 12 month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration.

If you are interested in giving NICKY a home, please submit an online adoption application for review by using this link https://form.jotform.com/232395363383057 or by visiting our website www.aplaceofhoperescue.com and filling out an application on our application page.

Pupdate! Libby (red, formerly Auburn) is an adorable Pomeranian who was surrendered to us after her puppy making days were done. Her new family had been looking for a friend for their Pomeranian Stella and found it in Libby! Her mom recently sent us some really cute pictures and we asked for an update and are so happy to hear that the girls are doing well together.

"They love each other! Surprisingly Stella has started to play with her… ❤️🥰We’ve never seen Stella play with other dogs… she has never been interested. She tolerates them, but never plays.

Libby is living her best life. She loves to be held, enjoys exploring the back yard, and car rides. Her personality is sweet and spicy. We love her so much."

JACK is a 9 year old 10 pound terrier mix who was adopted from us in 2023. He was recently returned because his adopter had an injury that required major surgery and she is facing a long recovery, including rehab, and he is not playing nicely with her caretakers.

Jack is a cute, scruffy boy with a little mohawk! He is affectionate, likes to be hugged, and loves giving kisses. He will put his paws on your leg and ask to be picked up to be loved on and loves snuggling with you on the couch.

JACK is good with certain small dogs, but does not do well with bigger dogs or dogs that are active or in his face. He is fine with calm, small older dogs, preferably females, and would be perfectly fine as an only dog. He should not go to a home with kids of any age and doesn't like cats.

JACK walks on a leash, knows how to use a doggy door and is 90% potty trained. He has good house manners and doesn't get into any trouble when his people aren't home. He loves to go outside and rides well in the car. A fenced yard where he can run around and burn off some energy would also make him happy.

As cute as he is, JACK definitely has some issues. He prefers women over men and is protective of whoever has chosen person is, male or female. He may bite people who come near his person, normally giving a warning growl first so someone has an opportunity to back off. He was handled by several people at the vet with no problem, but he's probably best suited to a one owner.

His foster mom has not had any issues with JACK and believes that if you avoid his triggers he will be fine. Those triggers are taking away something away from him and making him do something he doesn't want to do, like get off the bed before he is ready to telling him no.

At night, JACK likes to sleep at bottom of the big bed snuggled next to his person, but because of his protective tendencies we would recommend not allowing him to sleep in the bed but rather in the bedroom in a dog bed nearby.

To meet JACK please submit an online adoption application using this link https://form.jotform.com/232395363383057 or by visiting our website www.aplaceofhoperescue.com and filling out an application on our application page. JANET is a 2-year-old, 12 pound mixed breed (Shih Tzu? Phalene? Chihuahua?) that was found as a stray with her sister and never claimed. The sisters are not bonded and can be separated but if anyone wants to adopt the pair, please let us know!

JANET is a very sweet, friendly little girl who loves to cuddle with you and sit on your lap. She warms up quickly to new people and wiggles happily when she gets attention.

JANET is a little timid with the number of dogs in her foster home and hasn't started to play with any of them yet but she was very playful with her sister. Her foster mom thinks it would benefit her to have another young playful dog in the home with her. We don't believe she's ever been an only dog. She has been around cats and is fine with them and good with older kids.

JANET is doing extremely well on her potty training and has learned how to go in and out the dog door. Because we don't know this circumstances of her becoming a stray we want her to have a home with a fenced yard for additional safety.

At night JANET sleeps in the big bed and likes to cuddle right next to you.

She has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, spayed, heartworm negative, has had a 12-month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration.

To meet JANET please submit an online adoption application using this link https://form.jotform.com/232395363383057 or by visiting our website www.aplaceofhoperescue.com and filling out an application on our application page. PHOENIX is an 8 month old, 20 pound Australian Shepherd surrendered to us. He was the runt of his litter, is deaf and has limited vision because of poor breeding practices. Do not let that stop you from reading more about this sweetheart!

PHOENIX originally came from a breeder in Atlanta that we took another dog from years ago. We were contacted and asked if we could help him too and found out that he is the brother of that dog. He is a double Merle and they are known to have sight and/or hearing issues. He is special needs but they are some of the best dogs if you take the time to work with them! They are receptive and responsive to training.

PHOENIX was kept outside with little interaction from what we can tell. He was afraid of touch when he came in but now that he feels confident in his foster home, he has really started to blossom! He loves attention and affection, gives tons of kisses, and loves being petted. He also loves other dogs. His best home is going to be one with another dog in it that he can buddy up with. It should be a playful dog that won't mind a dog that might walk into them sometimes!

PHOENIX cannot hear, but he can see motion and light. He watches you and will follow you if you're walking around the room, but he does not see as well in the dark. He has already learned to use the dog door with no problem and he navigates very well around the house. Things like fences are hard to see, so he will walk into a chain link fence until he maps the area. He is working on his potty training but he needs some work. Because of his lack of hearing and sight impairment, we are requiring a home with a fenced yard.

At night PHOENIX seems to be most comfortable sleeping stretched out on the floor, probably because of his prior living conditions. He's not used to curling up in a bed and he chooses to ignore all of the fluffy dog beds around him.

PHOENIX has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, neutered, heartworm negative, has been started on heartworm and flea treatment, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration.

MORE about PHOENIX: He has not been around kids or cats since we have had him. He does have sharp little puppy teeth and won't be the best with a toddler or younger kid who can't understand his deafness and vision issues. Dogs like that can startle quickly and a home with older children who can understand him would be best if there are kids in the home. Special needs dogs like Phoenix can be trained with a tap training method. We will be happy to discuss that further with anyone interested in giving this sweet boy a home!

To meet PHOENIX please submit an online adoption application using this link https://form.jotform.com/232395363383057 or by visiting our website www.aplaceofhoperescue.com and filling out an application on our application page. Submission of an application does not obligate you to adopt or guarantee approval. Check your spam email for responses or questions from our application review team.

In Loving Memory ❤️

Tilly came to us after somebody saw her and her brother being given away for free. She was the precious puppy who was quickly adopted by a loving family. We are so grateful to them, not only because they gave her a wonderful home, but also because when she was diagnosed with a serious condition they took amazing care of her until her little body could not take anymore. She was a lucky little dog and we are so sad for her family.

"It is with a heavy heart to share that our beloved Tilly crossed the rainbow bridge last week. We adopted her from APOH in 2020 and she was the light in our lives. Tilly was diagnosed with megaesophagus in March 2022 and despite challenges she was the bestest pup in the world and always greeted everyone with kisses and tail wags. The past month had been difficult for her and her little body just gave up. Although we are completely heartbroken, we are grateful that we got to be her pet parents during her short life. She was loved beyond measure 💔"

Run free, sweet girl ❤️

BRANDY is a 2 year old, 7.8 pound Maltese mix who was found running down the road with another dog. No one claimed them so she is looking for a new home (the other dog has already been adopted)!

There have been lively discussions regarding what BRANDY'S mix is. Her foster mom has decided that she is an SFL “Scruffy Fluffy Lowrider”, the perfect breed for someone who wants a constant loving companion!

BRANDY is an always happy lovebug whose tail wags continually. She wants nothing more in life than to be with her person and give your face a good cleaning. She was initially anxious when her humans left the house but she has settled now that she knows they are coming back. If her person is outside visiting other humans and she can see them…..she’s going to let you know she's not happy not being with you! She loves people of all sizes and would do well with older kids.

BRANDY gets along with and plays with all the dogs she meets. She loves to play and has 2 speeds, fast and faster! She would be best in a home that has another playful, young pup her size. We have not had her around kids.

BRANDY enjoys car rides and does pretty well on a leash. A fenced yard is preferable due to not knowing how she became a stray and she loves to play outside. During our recent snow event, she had a blast doing zoomies and rolling around in the snow. She is doing well on her potty training and only has an occasional accident.

BRANDY loves to sleep in the big bed and snuggles next to her foster parent at night.

BRANDY has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, spayed, heartworm negative, has had a 12-month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot and is microchipped with a lifetime registration.

To meet BRANDY please submit an online adoption application using this link https://form.jotform.com/232395363383057 or by visiting our website www.aplaceofhoperescue.com and filling out an application on our application page. Submission of an application does not obligate you to adopt or guarantee approval.

10/02/2025

Ladies and gentlemen, we are sad to announce that sometime this year (final date unknown), A Place of Hope will cease to function as a rescue. A lot of thought, tears and heartache went into making this decision. It is probably the single most difficult thing we have ever done, and definitely was not our plan as we welcomed the new year. But life and evolving circumstances and tough rescue conditions dictated a hard decision.

We debated on the timing of the announcement since WE ARE STILL AN ACTIVE RESCUE with dogs in our care that need to find homes, with bills that need to be paid, with an upcoming fundraiser for a cutie that needs your help, and dogs that haven't even been posted yet, but in all fairness to our rescue partners, community, and volunteers, we wanted to put the word out sooner rather than later. Please keep following us and keep sharing our posts to help the dogs find their best homes until we are done! Your support means everything to us and to the dogs.

With this announcement we will not be bringing in any more dogs other than the last two we have already committed to. Once the 40 dogs currently in rescue are adopted, we will be transitioning to the next step of our journey, one that we can't wait to tell you about! Until then our rescue procedures, standards of care, and adoption requirements remain the same. Dogs will still be posted for adoption and we will still do our pupdates! ❤️

We want you to know that if you adopted a dog from A Place of Hope (or Flori Bama Small Breed Rescue, same rescue-different name), our adoption contract stands and we will ALWAYS take any dog back at any time with open arms if you're no longer able to keep it or care for it. Your dog's lifetime microchip registration with AKC Reunite will still be maintained. Our promise to the dogs that have come through our doors is not ending because we are no longer continuing the rescue. We are as committed to them now as we were the day they came in.

We are sure many of you are asking why and we'd like to briefly address that. The top three stressors for any rescue right now are the economy, the lack of volunteers and fosters, and the overwhelming demand to take in dogs. Even the most seasoned rescuers are being beaten down. We really had to ask ourselves if the stress and cost to our own health and families was sustainable. Unfortunately we don't think it is, at least not now.

But that doesn't mean we plan to stop helping little dogs! We may no longer be a rescue but this is not the end of A Place of Hope. When we talked about closing we knew that we still wanted to make a difference and give a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves and to possibly help people keep their dogs instead of having to make a choice to surrender. To that end, we have plans to keep advocating for little dogs and serving our small dog community in a different capacity. Those plans are still in progress but as soon as we have everything worked out we will let you know! We think you will be very excited, we know we are, and we will be counting on your support to continue making a difference!

One of the hardest things about this decision was telling the amazing followers, supporters, adopters, volunteers, and friends that we have gained in the past seven and a half years. Ultimately we hope that you understand and continue to support us as we transition to our new endeavor! More to come!

We have been receiving a lot of messages about Save This Life, the microchip company that has ceased operations.

If you adopted a dog from us whether as A Place of Hope Small Dog Rescue or FloriBama Small Breed Rescue, it is registered with AKC Reunite, which is a very large and reputable company that has been around a long time.

If you did not adopt a dog from us and you are unsure about who your pet's microchip is registered with, you can check the number by using the AAHA Universal Microchip Lookup Tool at this link- https://www.aaha.org/for-veterinary-professionals/microchip-search/

If you discover your pet's microchip was registered to the closed company, you'll need to register with a different company. This picture, which is making the rounds all over social media, gives three solid options for microchip registration, including AKC Reunite.

Again, if you have adopted from us, your microchip is registered with AKC Reunite and no action is needed!

BEAR is a gorgeous 2-year-old, 14.8 pound Yorkie mix. He has a strong personality and needs the right adopter to be his person!

BEAR is a loving, sweet boy who will tell you when he needs his own space. If you pay attention to his cues and you're willing to work with him, he'll be the best friend you ever had! Bear's biggest issue is learning to trust and know that he is in a forever home because he's been bounced around a bit.

BEAR is a resource guarder. We had a trainer come and work with him and show us techniques to help with that. The biggest thing he will resource guard is a person (especially men, his favorite people!). He needs a strong leader who understands that working on resource guarding takes time but it can be safely managed and corrected. He’s a very confident dog and will do best with a human that sets firm and consistent boundaries.

BEAR would be best as an only dog or with a female dog his size. He is intimidated by the bigger dogs and will bark at them. He should not go to a home with kids and he is not good with cats.

BEAR will use the dog door and go outside to potty sometimes, but he does still mark. He needs a home with a fenced yard. He is playful and very high energy and likes to do zoomies around the yard. He loves to play with stuffed animals and toys and will hoard them. He cannot be confined without becoming aggressive. This is very important! If you plan to crate your dog or use a pen, do not apply for Bear.

Because of his resource guarding BEAR is not allowed to sleep on the bed because he won't let mom share space with his foster dad! He has a really nice dog bed in the other room and he's happy as a lark in his own comfy dog bed.

BEAR has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, neutered, heartworm negative, has had a 12-month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot and is microchipped with a lifetime registration.

MORE about BEAR: Bear is the king of his castle. If you tell him he can't do something, he'll get an attitude. Sometimes he'll bark at you and sound like he's going to eat you, but he's typically all noise... as long as you can read his language. Bear also decides when he's ready to get up. If he's not ready when you come to wake him, he will growl at you and just give you "the look". Come back an hour later and ask him if he's ready and then he's Mr. Personality! He will be happy and bouncy, jumping up on you and eager to go outside.

To meet BEAR please submit an online adoption application using this link https://form.jotform.com/232395363383057 or by visiting our website www.aplaceofhoperescue.com and filling out an application on our application page. Submission of an application does not obligate you to adopt or guarantee approval. Check your spam email for responses or questions from our application review team.

We are a foster-based rescue located in Pensacola FL and adopt within a 6-hour drive to Pensacola. Local applicants will be given first consideration. Puppies, dogs with pending vet appointments and dogs with behavioral issues are local adoption only.

Everyone has the option to choose adoption

A Place of Hope Small Dog Rescue (formerly Flori Bama Small Breed Rescue) is a nonprofit small dog rescue located in the Pensacola, Florida area. We are foster based which means all of our dogs are kept in private homes through adoption. We do not have a facility. The advantage of a foster-based rescue is that we are able to observe and interact with the dogs in a home environment and learn what type of home they are best suited for based on their individual personalities and needs. We specialize in small breeds and the majority of our dogs are 15 pounds and under. We rescue and rehome shelter dogs, stray dogs, and owner surrendered dogs. All different breeds and ages come through our doors! We make sure they receive a full check up at the vet, are up to date on shots, rabies vaccinated, heartworm tested and on prevention, parasite tested and treated, spayed and neutered, and microchipped with a lifetime registration. We also take care of any other medical care necessary while they are with us, such as dentals, eye, ear, and skin infections, tumor removals, etc. We hold weekly adoption events in Pensacola and also do one-on-one meet and greets with approved applications. Our adoption process includes an adoption application, a vet reference, and a home check. Our adoption fees range from $200-350 and we adopt most dogs within a two hour driving radius from Pensacola. Longer distance applications may be considered on a case by case basis. Puppies stay local (within an hour drive of Pensacola) to ensure they get all sets of puppy shots and their spay/neuter and rabies vaccine when they are old enough. We are not a “first come, first served” rescue. We work hard to match a dog to the applicant that best fits a dog’s individual personality and needs. We make a promise to each dog who comes through our rescue that we will find it the best furever home. They came to rescue for a reason. As their advocates we try to make sure they leave us to become happy, well-cared for, and loved members of a new family!
