Pupdate! As you know we are particular about dog placement. We observe our dogs carefully and put them in the homes that we think are best suited for their personalities and energy levels, and history, too. Not everyone agrees with our process, especially if they are being denied to adopt a dog they want. But we hold firm for a reason!
One of the requirements that we had for Chance (the dark pup) was that he had a playful dog friend in his new home. We received a lot of applications for him from people who did not have other dogs, and some of them got very upset when we would not approve their applications for him. Yes, dogs can adapt. But who would deny this absolute joy? Chance and his poodle brother, Gunner, have played almost non-stop since his adoption! They are best friends and wrestle and play and chase each other all day long. Dad says they play themselves to sleep!
Chance and his fur brother are so happy to have each other and his family is thrilled with how well the two dogs are getting along. This is why we do what we do, this is what we held out for.
Happy Tails, Chance!
Give this boy a squeaky toy and he's good to go!!! LINUS is an estimated 8.5 year old, 9 pound Pomeranian who was found as a very matted and underweight stray in Mississippi and taken to a shelter where he was later pulled to safety.
LINUS is a nut! He is a sweet boy who will give you LOTS of kisses after running around like a silly boy. Sometimes he grumbles when you go to pick him up, but he doesn't do anything beyond that. We think it's a blend of stranger danger and possible hearing loss. His foster mom makes sure she picks him up when he is facing her so he's not surprised, plus he can give more kisses that way! Linus is happy, happy, and bounces and jumps and his tail is always wagging. He loves to chase a toy, but he's not so good at catching it! He also loves to be in the yard running and playing chase with the other dogs. At first we thought Linus needed to be in a home as an only dog but as he has settled into his foster home he has adapted very well to the other dogs. The only thing is that he should not go to a home with a dog who is an alpha or much bigger than he is. Linus adores his person and will be the most loyal little companion. At night he will sleep in the bed with his people or in a doggy bed if preferred.
Linus has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, neutered, has had a dental, is heartworm negative, has had a 12 month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot and is microchipped with a lifetime registration.
MORE about LINUS: No kids, no alpha dogs, not cat tested. Working on potty training. Needs a fenced yard due to hearing loss and stray history. Loves toys!
To meet or adopt LINUS please submit an online adoption application using this link https://form.jotform.com/232395363383057 or by visiting our website www.aplaceofhoperescue.com and filling out an application on our application page. Submission of an application does not obligate you to adopt or guarantee approval.

Former rescue pup Marty knows how to beat the heat! A bowl full of ice cubes! He loves them so much and Mom and Dad are happy to oblige! How are your dogs staying cool this summer? 🐾😎
Puddin' Update! Look at this happy girl!!! She is doing so well! If you remember at one point in the beginning of her journey she had to have a feeding tube because she was refusing to eat, and now she is a little chonky! That is both because she has a healthy appetite and because the extra weight helps stretch her skin and keep it supple to combat the tightening of the skin as it heals. She should be about 10 pounds and right now she's wavering between 11 and 12! The long burn part along her side is almost closed, leaving her shoulder and her hip to close and that should finish up her healing. We realize that we've never shown the general public the pictures of her burns (because we're certain that Facebook would flag them and they are pretty graphic) but trust us when we say that her recovery has been truly remarkable! She's always been a friendly sweetheart and this video shows her fun personality! Puddin' is the cutest, sweetest, most sassy little girl. She is fully potty trained and loves to run around the yard and explore. She has really good recall (most of the time!) and will come right back when she is called. Besides being super smart and motivated, Puddin' just loves everyone!
Thanks as always to Coastal Sunrise Animal Hospital for everything they have done, not only for Puddin' and the other 4 dogs that came out of the fire, but also for all of the rescue dogs that pass through their doors on their way to finding their forever homes. We will sing their praises every chance we get! *Video and info provided by one of the vet techs that Puddin' stays with. ❤️ Thank you, Victoria!
Good morning! We wanted to give everyone a quick Puddin' update! She must have heard all of your prayers and felt all of the love surrounding her because she started eating yesterday afternoon! This is such great news and we were so relieved. She needs to build up her strength for her surgery tomorrow! We were also able to forgo the IV last night! Her eyes continue to be a problem and she is now wearing a cone to keep her from scratching or rubbing them. She's not a fan, but it has to be done. Overall her progress is uplifting ... Keep those prayers coming!!!

Pupdate and Happy Gotcha Day! Buddy (Tristan) was surrendered to us out of a pretty big hoarding situation. There were 46 dogs living in a trailer. The owner was afraid to let them go outside because she didn't want the landlord to see how many she had. We will let you imagine the conditions. She is a nice lady who meant well, but got in over her head rescuing different dogs. However, without getting them fixed they multiplied quickly. Thankfully she turned to us for help and we slowly started removing them from the residence. Some of them, like Buddy, were very shy and timid and had not been handled very much. But he got a great home with a family who understood where he had come from and were happy to help him find a better future with them!
"Two years ago today, Buddy, formerly known as Tristan, found his forever home after being one of forty-six dogs rescued from a hoarding house. Transforming from a shy, scared pup with trauma, he's now an outgoing, loving family member who adores outdoor adventures, trail running, cuddles, and morning snuggles in bed next to his owners. Described as more loyal and loving than any other dog they've had, six weeks after he was rescued Buddy became a source of joy and comfort during a challenging time when one of his owners was diagnosed with cancer. Though they rescued Buddy, his owners believe he rescued them, becoming their beloved furbaby. It was definitely worth being patient and understanding to see how this sweet pup has transformed."
Happy Tails Buddy!
Happy Saturday! Just a little reminder that we cancelled our adoption event today due to weather. We have plenty of beautiful little dogs available for adoption, and some who have been here for a minute, (which in southern-speak means longer than that). Speaking of... we have a lot of people message and ask why certain dogs are in rescue longer than others. Some people want to know what's wrong with the dogs that do not get adopted quickly. There is nothing wrong with those dogs! The right people just haven't found them yet. Some of our cute little dogs get so many applications that we can't even keep up with them while other beautiful, sweet dogs are still waiting. Please don't ignore a dog that hasn't been adopted for a little while! They are just as precious and deserving of a loving forever home as any other dog! It's no secret that there's a pet crisis in this country. Whether it's for legitimate reasons or a complete unwillingness to continue to care for a pet, we are seeing unprecedented numbers of unwanted dogs everywhere. Shelters are overrun and rescues cannot keep up. Unfortunately when shelters and rescues can't help, people turn to something most of us would never contemplate...an unbelievable amount of dogs are being dumped on the streets to fend for themselves, many of them unaltered, which means more unwanted dogs on the streets and living in the woods and everywhere you can imagine.
There are many people in our area who work to save those dogs, and one of them is near and dear to us. If you remember when Cooper was first seen and then recovered after almost 8 months (he's still living his best life with Francine) there was a young lady helping us every step of the way. We could not have gotten him home safe without her and we would like to shine a light on what she does. Summer Benge is a "street" rescuer. She not only works with a network of other such rescuers and rescues to help strays, she is also currently feeding about 7-9 stray dogs before work every day, rain or shine, hot or cold. (She has a cofeeder who does the route on the weekends.)
They wait for her to come, possibly the only person who shows them any kindness. She traps the dogs she can and gets them fixed to help stop the breeding cycle. The lucky ones go to a foster home, IF one is available. If there isn't a place for them they go back to the streets and she keeps working to get them to a safe place. This year she estimates she has gotten 15-20 dogs to foster or permanent homes. Summer sometimes gets dog food donations from food that Walmart can’t sell and we have been shipping dog food to her monthly to help supplement her feeding, but she can use more help, especially with cold weather coming. If you would like to donate so she can keep buying food and flea meds and, most importantly,
Look at this little fashionista! Fendi (formerly Cherry) was born into rescue in March of last year. She was adopted in May and got a wonderful home. Fendi is not only a very well-loved little girl, she also has the most amazing wardrobe! Her mom adores her and loves dressing her up. Fendi doesn't mind at all, she loves the attention! These are just some of the pictures her mom has sent us from the time she was adopted till we ran into her at Barktoberfest on Sunday! Enjoy!
USE HEARTWORM PREVENTION!!!
This! This is why we advocate so hard for heartworm prevention and deny applicants who do not get annual heartworm tests and do not provide their dogs with consistent monthly heartworm prevention. This dog was at the shelter having a routine surgery and suddenly died on the table. When his surgical team opened him up to find out why, they discovered that he was full of heartworms that were destroying him from the inside out. This poor dog had been living with those heartworms for quite some time. He did not have to die. Someone failed him by not providing him with proper heartworm prevention.
It only takes one bite from one mosquito to give a dog heartworms. It doesn't matter if your dog is living inside or outside. It doesn't matter if it's summertime or winter. The only way to avoid what happened here is to keep your dog on year-round heartworm prevention. We hear excuses for why people don't have their dogs on heartworm prevention all the time, from "they only go outside to potty" (wrong-inside dogs get heartworms too) to "it's too expensive". Well, treatment is much more expensive. And death is the highest price of all. Talk to your vets. Do the right thing! Put your dogs on heartworm prevention!!!
Happy Gotcha Day, Wiley!
Pupdate and Happy Gotcha Day! A year ago Wiley (formerly Dean) was adopted by a lovely lady and her dog Lulu. Wiley had been owner surrendered to us because he was afraid of his owner's kids. He is a sweet little dog who just needed a quieter home. His new mom was looking for a companion for her little girl and for herself and we thought he was just the right fit. Wiley has blossomed with his new mom and his fur sister and is doing so well! He was so timid and shy and now he is a confident, happy and playful little dog. We love the video that she sent of him playing with his sister. This is one of those adoptions that makes our hearts incredibly happy!
"Sunday, July 30th, is Wiley’s (formerly Dean) one year Gotcha Day!!!!! When I got him, he was so timid and shy…he looked like a little deer in the headlights.
His foster mom said that he needed to do things in his own time, and she was right!! After a few weeks, he and Lulu, my yorkie poo, started doing zoomies in the backyard and playing together a bit, but he was still rather shy and skittish around me, even though he was surely shown love. He slowly came out of his “shell”.
Well, fast forward to today and he is the dog he was meant to be! He loves to sunbathe in the backyard, play tug of war with Lulu, and get in my lap every time I sit down. He loves to be loved on. They sleep in the big bed, are never crated, and they pretty much “rule”!
He got lots of attention when posted, but I am so very grateful that APOH chose us to be his family!!!"
Happy Tails Wiley!
Cooper Recovery
We thought you all might want to see at least part of how the Cooper recovery went down. We spent probably close to an hour to an hour and a half setting up because it was pouring when we got there and we had some glitches making sure the gate would latch properly. When it was set up we all scattered to our cars and waited. *If you only want to see the Cooper part, start around the 2 minute mark!
Once he was caught and Francine was in the enclosure and Cooper was fairly calm, we put about four slip leads on him. Francine and Summer took the lead on this because he clearly recognized Francine, and Summer was familiar to him because of all the feedings. The rest of us stayed back so we weren't crowding him and making him more nervous, but close enough to be of assistance if needed! Once they felt confident that they could move him out of the enclosure and into the car that had been backed up close to the area they brought him out. Francine and Summer literally picked him up and carried him into the car. And then it was to McDonald's for a quick snack and home to begin the cleanup!
Cooper is doing very well and will go to the vet soon. He has some minor cuts and bites and a bump on his head. His ears are nasty and need to be addressed. But other than that he looks great! It was a stroke of luck that he found a food source, and of course he's been regularly eating for the last 3 weeks while we worked out our plan to get him. We had a few setbacks, but there were also a few big things working in our favor to help make this happen, and for that we are so very grateful! We are also so thankful to everyone who helped bring this sweet boy to safety. Our APOH family has expanded to include you all!
