I’m only posting this because I had someone tell me in the last week that I must be loaded because I work in vet med… if you saw my skills and knowledge at work, how much I have spent on school, and how hard I work and then compared it to my paycheck, you would cry for me.
I make more as a pet sitter than a veterinary nurse! And I continue to do it because I love saving animals and helping people, and it’s all I have wanted to do since I was old enough to know what a vet was.
Do you know that veterinarian’s responsibilities include examination, prescribing, prognosing, and performing surgery, and that the veterinary nurse/technician is responsible for EVERYTHING else? This means we are the ones performing:
-blood draws
-radiographs
-cystocentesis for sterile urine collection
-IV catheter placement
-dental cleanings
-dental radiographs
-subcutaneous, intramuscular, and IV injections
-anesthesia administration and monitoring
-surgical prep
-Scrub in to assist with surgery
-fill medications
-CPR
-central line placement
-answering phones and making appointments
-discharging patients
-Cleaning literally everything in the hospital
-reading ear and skin cytologies and fecal floats
-making and reading blood slides
-interpreting fine needle aspirates
-walking and feeding patients
-laundry
-obtaining patient vitals
-triaging patients
-and so much more
And most of us make a comparable salary to a fast food employee.
So please be mindful of this the next time you want to say, all we care about is money. We are required to have more roles than our human medicine nurses and techs, while making less than half of what they do with the same amount of school and debt. Be mindful of your words.
I also want to say I have worked at MANY practices and still have yet to find all the rich veterinarians I hear people talk about. 🤷♀️

Has your puppy or kitty ever had ear mites?
This is one of the many things we look for when we do an ear cytology, and why ear cytologies are always important to check!
We have to know what’s causing the itchy ears, in order to treat the itchy ears correctly.
You can prevent your cats from getting eat mites by applying revolution once a month, that can be purchased from your regular veterinarian.
I found this on a patient today!
Who else is obsessed with Miggy’s ears? 😍
