🌟Crate Conditioning🌟
During Puppy Academy we work to build independence, confidence and routine, so crates are regularly used for naps, meal times and to regulate play. The club is a stimulating environment and pups need their 💤 18+ hours a day to be exact!
Crate Games are a great way to develop a positive (tasty) association with the crate and concept of being confined to a space. This is a simple, 5-min beginner exercise to do at home…
- Leave the crate door open
- Treat tease your pup - give them a big sniff of the treats in your hand
- Throw a treat into the crate
- Say “Crate” and Point into the Crate
- Once they go in for the treat say “YES” and let them freely walk out
* Some pups will need to be lured into the crate. Have them follow your hand (from their nose into the crate) or do a trail of treats leading into the crate. Never force them in or place them in.
- Repeat, Repeat
- Make sure to always say the command “crate” and point to the crate (hand signal)
Once your pup is comfortable and excited to go in, you can start to incorporate closing the door (don’t lock); wait until they provide eye contact then open the door and let them be free.
If your pups is a rock star, remove throwing in the treat and try just saying the command “Crate” then Point and WAIT. Does your pup walk in? If so, deliver a Treat Bomb!Repeat, repeat.
