Monday was an extremely hard day on the homestead.

We lost the mama of the herd, Lady, during a difficult childbirth. During an emergency c-section, Lady started aspirating and there was nothing more we could do for her. But the vets worked hard to quickly get her calf out and work on him. After about an hour, he was stable and is doing so well today.

If you have ever heard me talk/brag about my Instagram cow...that was Lady. She was an absolute sweetheart of a cow. I have pictures of Will laying on her in the middle of the pasture soaking up the afternoon sunshine.

Monday was full of a lot of emotions. And yes, tears were shed for "just a cow". On our property, our cows are like family. They are just oversized dogs with individual personalities. Lady was our gentle, mama to the herd (and to my children) type of cow.

Just a couple of weeks ago, we had friends over and the kids wanted to play/walk one of the cows. I looped a training halter onto Lady and she let the kids walk her up and down the hill. No pulling. No kicking. She's the only cow I would trust around kids. Such a gentle, sweet girl.

I had figured this would have been her last calving and I was prepared to let her retire here as an old, fat, happy cow just enjoying lazy days and snuggles but unfortunately that wasn't in the cards for her.

She gave us a beautiful bull calf, and right now he's doing well and is starting to gain more confidence walking/feeding.

These two are just adorable. I love the bond they're creating and can't wait for Jet to be in the mix.

I've nicknamed this little guy Tiny. He's a smaller buck but great body and ears. We had contemplated keeping him for our program but sadly we don't have the space. :(

Lady's Man (aka Manny) enjoyed his first day in the pasture with all the mamas and babies. For those who don't know, Lady passed away during an emergency C-section. The vets were about to save the baby but not Mama. Lady will forever have a place in my heart. She is still missed. But I'm happy I have a piece of her in my sweet little bull calf.

Welcome to Addilay Farms!

We’re on a journey to moving our homestead from Texas to North Carolina.

My husband and I homeschool our 3 young children while we build a self-sustaining homestead. The most exciting part of our homestead is our Pedigree Holland Lops breeding program. The bunnies are handle from Day 1 and raised around daily love, exercise, and household stimulation. As we have two large dogs, a cat, and small children, our bunnies know the different sites, sounds, and smells of a family environment.

We are members of the Holland Lop Specialty Club and The American Rabbits Breeders Association, Inc.
