Dog research has surged in popularity over the last decade. Now cats are getting their time in the lab, too!

Results from a cat study out of the University of Guelph found strong correlations between punitive punishment and increased aggressive behavior, as well as a correlation between positive reinforcement and reduced incidents of aggression (O’Hanley, 2021).

Owners who used ‘corrections’ (saying “No!”, restraining/holding the cat, making a loud noise) in response to unwanted behavior had cats who were more likely to aggress toward novel people, objects, and situations. Verbal corrections for unwanted behavior were also correlated with increased aggression toward other animals.

The good news is that cats whose owners provided enrichment such as clicker training, puzzles, and trick training were less likely to show aggression toward other animals.
