In 2021 we rescued six horses from an auction in Texas. They were all malnourished and some very clearly abused. Over the last three years we have worked tirelessly to rehabilitate and find forever homes for these beautiful horses. On Thursday, Paloma, the last of the six found her home ❤️we have loved being a part of their journey.
This is how Levi feels about the cold snap we are about to get 🤣 we hope everyone stays warm and safe out there!
Flash
We all have that one coworker who makes getting any work done impossible 😅
Flash caught red handed stealing a blanket and stomping on it.
Tawny
Tawny is having fun in the arena! The cold air has everyone feeling frisky. We hope everyone is ready for the cold snap we are about to get.
Tawny is ready for the rain tomorrow! First time ever wearing a rain sheet and she wasn’t bothered by the noise or feeling of it at all. After we practiced wearing a rain sheet she got a much needed bath and was absolutely amazing.
We are going to miss the warm sunny days!
It’s been a big week for Tawny! Yesterday was the first day she’s probably ever had a blanket on and this was her reaction! Tawny has been through quite a lot in her life and for her to trust that the straps and blanket weren’t going to hurt her is huge! We are so proud of the progress this little lady continues to make ❤️
Tawny is truly a special mare. She may take a little while to warm up to strangers and to fully trust you but once she does, there won’t be anything like it. She loves playing in the arena and exploring new things but she also enjoys following you around like a puppy so she can get all the scratches!
Levi used to be so afraid to step over any thing on the ground but with consistent work, lots of praise and trust Levi can confidently walk through obstacles! Being more confident with walking over poles has also helped Levi be more relaxed when getting his feet done and walking on trails!
Help us in wishing our incredible Equine Manager, Amanda Bowser a wonderful Happy Birthday! She is the glue that holds us together. We can’t thank her enough for everything does for animals and people alike. Amanda, we all love you and hope you have the very best birthday ❤️❤️
Don’t let “pasture horse only” scare you.
Levi might not be a riding horse but it doesn’t mean he can’t have a normal and fulfilling life ❤️ there are so many things to do with horses that don’t include riding.
Taking them for walks down a trail, ponying them off another horse, doing liberty work or just grooming are all things that are enjoyable for humans and enriching for horses.
Here is a little video of Levi’s first time being ponied. He did fantastic sticking with the other horse and really enjoyed following us around the arena. Stay tuned for more videos of Levi and his training.

Training horses is all about adapting and listening to your horse and their needs.
Yesterday I wanted to work with Tawny on blanketing but just as we stepped into the round pen, the barn exploded with life. The sound of the air compressor, welder, people coming and going with their horses and her buddy screaming for her, were a lot to handle and Tawny became very nervous with the environment around her. So, I tossed our training plans out the door and came up with something new. I decided to take things back to the basics and groom her while allowing her to work through her emotions and in turn, Tawny began to soften and look to me for comfort and forget about the distractions and world around her.
Every interaction with your horse is a teachable and trainable moment. They remember every interaction you have with them. While I would have LOVED to work on blanketing with her, it wasn’t in the cards and that’s ok! What Tawny did learn today is that in stressful situations, she can trust that her human handlers will be there to help her through it and in turn she gains more confidence.
In the beginning of the video you can see the raised head, stiff lips and ears and her taking very short little breaths. The second part of the video you can see she is still listening to the things going on but her head is lower, jaw relaxed and she even comes over to have me brush her mane.
It’s a great day to be alive when you’ve been rescued ❤️ These three are still looking for their forever home. Send us an email or visit our website for more information on Levi, Tawny and Tierra
Karen (formerly Twiggy) was adopted in 2020 by her wonderful owner, Clarissa Stevens ! Clarissa and Karen have worked tirelessly to get where they are. Karen hasn’t been the easiest mini but with dedication and lots of time, look at Karen now!
We are so thankful for our adopters and all the hard work they put into making these animals the best versions of themselves.
Levi round pen 6/22/23
Levi in the round pen today. He did fabulous listening to voice cues and staying nice and relaxed. He even went into the wash rack and got hosed off!

Rain, snow, shine and anything in between- these ponies don’t care, they love to dig and roll around in the dirt! They sure keep us busy making them sparkle after they roll each day. If you’re looking for a horse of your own to make sparkle, check out our adoptable horses on our website www.emeraldcitypetrescue.org/our-animals/equine
Nugget having some fun in the arena today!
I think we can all agree that Nugget should stick to jumping and not Sarah 🤣
Levi short training session 2/16/23
Levi might not ever be comfortable enough to be a riding horse but moments and sessions like today are so critical to his over all training and quality of life. A year ago, I wouldn’t have been able to just put a girth on him and lunge. He would have been so scared and tense. the fear of a girth altered how he thought about everything, he was even afraid of a blanket. With continued work Levi now sees the girth as no big deal and calmly and willingly accepts it. He lets me know if he needs a break but now we can do things like blanket him and it won’t cause stress.
Watching Levi come this far with just a little patience and kindness has been so rewarding!
