Exchequer is mottled, genetically.
And called Exchequer because the word was invented for the Leghorn of that colour.
No, it has nothing to do with chess... and whoever thought of that was probably drunk.

It is very loudly mottled. Look at the saddle of the c**k below.
Hysterical mottled I like to call it, it is a fun adjective, easy to remember and describes the phenotype well when compared to civilised mottled. Another such adjective.
Mottled becomes hysterical on a non-exchequer Leghorn, i.e. other breeds, with too much white (tail & wing feathers completely white) and massive, super-big white feather tips, much too much and large compared to what should be mottled according to standard feather colour description jargon. This can happen in many breeds, think Pekins, Cochin Bantams, Serama, Brahma...
Countries, breeds, have their own colour names, often genetically the same as other breeds and in other countries.
How do you drive yourself crazy? Answer: by thinking that there is logic in the hobby colour names.
Do you know what exchequer is? This is not a financial term, but a chessboard (échiquier in French) with a black and white checkerboard pattern. It says something about a 50/50 black and white random pattern, but the chicken should be more white than black, but there should be a regularity in the distribution of black and uncoloured parts of the feathers. You know, of course, that mottled is no colour.
Wrong feathers look black and mottled. Good ones like the one below, without the saddle which is too black.
