Thanks for 100k followers, folks 🥵🌱

The last 9 months have been a blast, to say I’m happy with the Tribe of curious, eager knowledge seekers (you lot 🤓) that’ve joined me on this journey would be an understatement!

Huge thanks to each and every one of you that’s stuck around whilst I’ve rambled on about our planet’s species and wild places - for 235 videos 😲

For my supporters, thank you for encouraging me and pushing me to show you (and myself!) more of the world we live in 🌍

And for my haters, thank you for challenging me and fuelling my efforts to prove you wrong 🤪

Here’s to the next 235 “And now you know!”s 😎

Do you know why we use invasive species in our pet treats? 👀🐾

We started The Rainforester to make a difference to our planet’s wild places 🌱

With an ever-growing pressure on farmers in the UK to meet our pets’ (and our own!) requirements, often at the expense of vital habitats, we decided to do things a little differently 🧐

By using wild species that have a disproportionately negative impact on their ecosystems, we can alleviate some of the pressure whilst doing our bit to reduce their effects on their neighbouring species 🦌

Check out the slides for a few reasons why we use the species that we do! 🦞

Elephants are well-known ecosystem engineers, wherever these massive pachyderms go their presence is made clear by the effects they have on their surrounding landscape. Left to their own devices, elephants wield the power (and appetite) to transform their habitat 🐘

BUT these animals don’t just effect habitats and other organisms on a large scale, they’re vital for some of the little guys too!

Weighing in at upwards of 6,000 kilograms, it’s no surprise that elephants tend to leave a trace of themselves wherever they walk. What is a surprise though, is that their footprints can be up to 30cm deep and can hold substantial amounts of water – 200 litres, in the case of one recorded pool formed of two merged footprints in Uganda 💧

As elephants walk through the forest, they leave deep footprints behind them. These footprints then fill up with water, creating little foot-shaped microhabitats for at least 61 different invertebrate and micro-invertebrate species as well as for frogs and toads throughout their life stages 🐸

Elephants are truly incredible, they do so much for the environments that they reside in, from seed dispersal to land clearing and even population control, this ‘Did you know?’ post is just one more reminder of what we can lose if the ongoing poaching crisis affecting Africa’s elephants continues to eliminate these essential animals from their habitats 🌱

Guess where we’re going? 👀

Well pops is at least, I still live at the factory making tasty pet treats and food toppers for your 4-legged pals 🐶🐱🐭

It’s been a fair few years since we’ve been able to venture into the original rainforests that we work in! 😮‍💨

Between the lockdowns, financial crises, local governmental voting issues (riots 🙃) and just keeping up with your orders – we haven’t been blessed with much time to plan a visit, but that changes now 🤸🏾‍♂️

We are so excited to be able to show you, over this short trip, at the very least a snippet of how our profits are used for our various projects, where our ingredients come from, how your purchases have provided jobs for local communities and some of the native wildlife that we are fighting so hard to protect 🌱

Stay tuned for a bunch of updates! 🌍

NTFPS aren’t exclusive to exotic far away rainforests! Did you know you can find examples of them as close as in your own garden too? 🧠💭

Love-in-a-mist (Nigella damascena) is a common garden plant here in the UK that gets its name from its ‘mist’ of needle-like leaves that surround its flower 🌸

Although now widely spread across much of the temperate world, this annual herbaceous plant likely originated in Turkey or Crete, where it would have been used for culinary, medicinal and cosmetic purposes 🌍

Today, the plant’s jet black seeds are still used as a condiment (eaten raw or cooked) and taste like nutmeg, they also produce essential oil often used in perfumes and, amongst many other facts, the dried seed pods can be sniffed to restore a lost sense of smell! 🤧

A very happy belated Father’s Day to this gentleman, scholar and all-round mad genius ⚡️

couldn’t be where it is today without all that you’ve done and sacrificed!

It’s certainly been a bumpy ride – and it’ll likely get a whole lot bumpier, but I couldn’t ask for a better partner in crime to roll through the punches with.

Much love pops ❤️

Bluebell season is upon us! So we’ve got a fun fact for you: did you know over half of our planet’s bluebells are found in the UK? 💙

Because of this, the bluebell is the unofficially recognised as our national flower! (Though the official position is held by the rose) 🌹

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, these little guys contribute to our wild places in a big way, and probably in more ways than you’re aware of! 😲

The Natural History Museum of Denmark and Natural Museums Scotland recently requested our image for a touring exhibition across 5 European countries (our minds are still blown) 🤯

First featured on BBC News a couple years ago, we had no idea this image (and the others in our collection) would be so impactful for conservation – turns out there isn’t much coverage of the extremely rare species that exist in the rainforests that we work in! 🐒

Now acknowledged internationally, this image will be used by the two museum groups to represent the Nigeria – Cameroon chimpanzee in their joint exhibition of the World’s 25 most endangered primates! 🙊

We’re beyond honoured to be a part of such an important educational exhibition, and hope that our images can continue to inspire and reveal more of the natural world to the public 🙏🏾

If you haven’t already, check out the photography section on our website – you’re guaranteed to spy a good few species you probably never knew existed! 💪🏾🌱

We only work with small scale forest farmers and wild collectors to make our pet treats 👨🏾‍🌾🦴

Rather than the large scale farming that often comes to mind when thinking of farms in the West, our farmers leave a muuuch smaller scar on the Earth 🌍

Infact some of their crops often require the shade of a rainforest canopy to grow! 👩🏾‍🌾

(Side note: great capture from our rainforest ground team of a couple hustling on their smallholding 💪🏾)

(Illegal) ebony leaving the National Park that we work in…

(Alongside a fair few other species of hardwood 🙃)

Scenes like this break our hearts, but is it really their fault?

We in the West often assume that, given the state of the planet, it would be simple to stop indigenous communities from performing acts like this.

The trouble is, this view doesn’t take into account cultural practices or, in this case, the need to feed families…

In our opinion this is the biggest reason why conservation often fails. By not providing a viable alternative there is no realistic way an indigenous community will change their ways, and it is unreasonable to expect them to.

This is why our projects revolve around indigene empowerment and ‘Commercial Conservation’.

By ensuring that each of them will generate their own funds, indigenes will get paid a salary many times more (and with much lower risk) than what they would as poachers or loggers 🪵

Your pet treat purchases in 2022 funded the start of our second rainforest nursery 🌱

This time for an afforestation project on 2000 ha of savannah land (about half the size of Cambridge!) 🌳

With this, we hope to tackle forestation on two fronts: replanting the dwindling forest corridors between the Mbe and Afi mountains from our first nursery, whilst creating virgin forest in Bansara from our second 💪🏾

We're getting ready to close up shop for 2022 tonight, and we wanted to say: Thank you so much for another incredible year! 🥳

Although it was certainly a bumpy end (thanks Royal Mail…) and to say it affected our conservation projects is an understatement - we still hope to bring you oodles of updates on our pet treat-funded rainforest projects in 2023 (fingers crossed for no Earth-shattering setbacks this time, the last few years have been knock after knock!) 🤞🏾

We’re signing off for a few days to spend some much needed time with friends and family, but don’t worry, we’ll be keeping an eye on our emails and socials in case of any straggling missing orders 🙏🏾

Photos sent to us, from one of our customers, of the condition of her order, delivered by Royal Mail – and she’s one of the lucky ones.

She only had to wait 2 WEEKS, and they were kind enough to wrap the box in their ‘damaged bag’ having used it as some sort of football in their yard.

But at least she has her order (and her treats miraculously weren’t vaporised during the box’s assault – packing paper for the win!)

Many of our customers have not been so fortunate this festive period, with some having waited much longer, and those that are still waiting. We haven’t faired much better, and have been resending orders left, right and centre, at no extra cost to our customers and with no compensation from the postal service.

We are still battling to keep on top of missing orders though, so if yours is missing please let us know – and to those that are fortunate enough to end up with two (or more...) orders for the price of one – keep them! And consider them a Christmas gift from us to you to apologise for the appalling service you’ve received from the nation’s #1 courier.

Have you received your order from The Rainforester?

The ongoing Royal Mail strikes and delayed backlog of deliveries have disrupted both our orders getting to you folks, and our vital materials (pouches etc) getting to us.

We are sorry for the extreme delays some of you have had in receiving your treats, especially so close to Christmas.

Please know that we are working furiously to rectify this and are doing what we can to keep track of where our orders are in their currently fractured system.

If you suspect your order is missing, please email us with the date you ordered and order number, we will make sure your order gets to you!
