Call for Improved Emergency Veterinary Services in Malta

As advocates for animals, we wholeheartedly support the Veterinary Surgeons Council's emphasis on responsible pet ownership. A cornerstone of responsible ownership is maintaining a strong, proactive relationship with your veterinarian to ensure your pet's health and well-being.

However, we must address the critical gap in emergency services available to pet owners in Malta, despite existing regulations. Under the Veterinary Establishments (Licensing) Regulations SL 437.106, all veterinary establishments are legally required to provide or participate in a 24-hour emergency service. Veterinary surgeons who are not affiliated with a veterinary establishment or clinic are also obliged to inform their clients about arrangements for emergency service access.

Despite this legal framework, Malta still lacks a fully operational 24/7 veterinary hospital. Although we have been informed that the hospital will reopen soon, the current lack of hospitalization services means many pets are unable to receive the proper treatment they urgently need. This leaves animals vulnerable, especially during emergencies that require overnight care or intensive treatment.

We urge the state to ensure compliance with existing laws while addressing the systemic gaps by establishing a reliable, state-supported emergency veterinary service. This would guarantee that no pet is left without help during critical times and that hospitalization services are available whenever needed.

Responsible pet ownership is a shared responsibility—one that requires the collaboration of pet owners, veterinary professionals, and the state. Together, we can ensure that every animal receives the care and protection they deserve, regardless of the hour.
