Berry & PomPom (formerly Bulbasaur and Pidgey) were returned today due to PomPom showing aggressive chasing behavior towards their owner, that hasn’t stopped despite trying multiple interventions.

As always a reminder that we ALWAYS take our animals back, no matter what. We are glad to have the chance to help PomPom feel more comfortable with people and find them a home with more experience dealing with rat aggression.

They will not be ready for adoption for probably a few weeks as we work with PomPom’s behavior. However, if you are comfortable working with behaviorally challenging rats and are interested in this girls, please send in an application and we can discuss!

‼️‼️‼️$281.02 NEEDED‼️‼️‼️

Hershey went in to AERC for a consult to determine what is going on with his lungs. He has been on antibiotics for several weeks with no improvement.

AERC does not think a lung infection is his only concern, he likely has a mass (tumor or abscess) in his lungs. We were given three options: CT scan to get more answers about the mass, try medication, or euthanasia.

Hershey did not react well to being sedated for x-rays previously, he took it very hard and took longer than normal to perk back up. AERC was concerned that he may not wake up from the scan, and surgery is out of the question regardless. So, we don’t think the potential benefits outweighs the risk of sedating him. He is otherwise active, loves treats and snuggles, loves his brother, we don’t feel euthanasia is needed yet. So we are trying a steroid and a bronchodilator to help alleviate his symptoms and keep him comfortable.

He will be staying as a hospice guinea pig for however long he has left. For those keeping track we now have THREE hospice guinea pigs (Hershey, Winston, and Gaston) and their bonded buddies. We could really use help with our veterinary bills that are continuing to skyrocket. If just 56 of our followers donated $5, we would have this bill covered. If just 14 of you donated $20, it would be covered. Can you spare $5, $10, or $20 towards Hershey’s vet bill so we can keep him comfortable and happy?

WINSTON had his vet visit on Friday and we have very sad news that his lump is cancer, not an abscess as we hoped. He also has a mild ear and eye infection due to the tumor preventing him from grooming one side of his face. He is on palliative care until his quality of life decreases. We hope that won’t be for quite some time, but it’s impossible to say for sure how much time he has left.

Winston and his buddy Archie are lucky to have a very dedicated foster who will care for them until the end, but we need help with covering the cost of his vet care. He may need more vet care in the future to keep him comfortable. Sadly his cancer is not operable.

LEMON is the cutest little male mouse. He is brother to Brick and Matrix, two other mice at the rescue. Their owner waited patiently for us to have space for the last boy. Isn’t he adorable?

He is a little skittish but settling in well. He will be vet checked on the 3rd and then hopefully available for adoption.

EIGHT animals are off to new adventures with new families today.

Casper & Charlie Brown have been with us (and with Bramble Berry Cavy Refuge before they merged with us) for several years and their foster family decided they could not part with these adorable brothers. Congratulations!

Heathertail, Jigglypuff, and Charmander are the last *babies* from the abandoned house crew (we have 3 moms left to find homes for!) to be adopted. Their dedicated new family drove from Iowa to meet us in Rochester for the hand-off. We know they’ll be loved!

Thea, Fink, and Roz went from lab rats to beloved pets with a work from home family that can’t wait to introduce these girls to all the perks of a forever family: free roaming, lots of treats, and cozy snuggles.

WINSTON is seeing the vet at Douglas Animal Hospital on Friday due to developing a lump that feels like an abscess on his back. It will likely need to be drained and then he will be put on antibiotics. If it’s NOT an abscess, we will need to investigate to figure out what it is and what to do about it.

We don’t know yet how much his visit will cost, but we just paid a $600+ bill at our main vet (Valley View Pet Hospital) and have more visits scheduled for other animals. When it rains it pours. Help us help critters like Winston by donating today!

We have had a LOT of vet bills recently that we need help paying as this has severely depleted our vet funds, and there is ALWAYS another medical emergency!

Starting off small, BAXTER has a URI and his vet bill was $70.40, can anyone contribute to covering this? We will be sharing all of the other animals currently receiving medical care in the next few days, so we can use all the help we can get. Baxter is the companion to Gaston, our sanctuary piggy who is on lifelong liver meds for an extremely enlarged liver. His meds cost money, too!

Meet… The Charcuterie Crew! We finally named the family of hamsters we took in recently. Sadly the fourth baby, Olive, failed to thrive and passed away.

Parents Cheese and Crackers are already pending adoption. The babies will be ready to go home at 6 weeks old (first week of March) but are available for preapplication now. Prosciutto is male, Baguette and Pickles are female.

MOO, one of our sanctuary mice, is recovering so well post-neuter. You may recall he had some odd health issues that we couldn’t quite figure out, and then he got testicle issues and needed to be neutered. Our vet thought it might be possible that everything is endocrine related and neutering might fix everything. Well, we can’t say for SURE, but his fur is growing back, and it wasn’t before!

He will be staying with us for life as a sanctuary mouse and will move in with his foster dad’s female mouse colony, since he can’t make babies.

We took in 5 new rats at the rescue last night!

RANDY and EARL are a bonded pair of 1 year old brothers. They are pretty sweet so far but definitely need some time to settle in.

C**T, TUM-TUM, and ROCKY (named by their new foster home) are also around 1 year old. They are all brothers as well, though from a different place! Upon intake we did notice that all three have some minor scratches, so we will be monitoring them closely to determine if they need to be separated or not.
