⚠️ Are you aware of the dangers of cyanobacteria for dogs? ⚠️

Many clients I work with are aware of dangers like water intoxication in dogs, and we go over water safety tips to enjoy those days by the water with our pups! But I was inspired by a recent post I came across to share this information on cyanobacteria here. I've realized for as many people who already look out for and know about cyanobacteria (as it affects humans too!), there's almost just as many who never heard of or knew about it.

Hope you all get to take advantage of the beautiful day and enjoy the snow - It'll be gone before you know it! ❄️

Here's your friendly reminder that just because you see snow, doesn't mean the ticks aren't out! 😬 The random warm days in the last few weeks of winter will start bringing them out - so even though it sounds silly after a walk in the snow, make sure you check for ticks and get your dogs protected if they haven't been over the winter!

Working with so many wonderful new families has really made me slack on keeping up with posts! I'll pair my apology with some tips to have a great (and safe!) Thanksgiving tomorrow with your pets! 🍁

Remember to watch young children around your animals while everyone is eating. Things can be dropped, or littles might want to sneak a treat to your cute pup! It's always safer to pair eating time with your dogs "place" cue to keep them out of the area, or manage the environment with gates and crates until you are sure there's no dangerous leftovers for your dog to snag. Our furbabies can definitely enjoy Thanksgiving with us in moderation, and by remembering that not everything that is delicious to us, is safe for them!🦃

Also remember to keep your dogs comfort level in mind! 🐶 Not all of our pups are used to huge crowds of people, and for some it can be stressful! As much as we want our dogs around for the family get together, remember that for some dogs, they would be much happier being away from the commotion and getting some leftovers with dinner later on.

With all of that in mind, I hope you have a great day with your families! I am definitely thankful for all of you, the families and dogs I work with are just wonderful. It's the best feeling to love the work you do! Happy Thanksgiving!🍁

Though it may seem like a fun thing for kids, dogs are NOT meant to sit on. EVER!!! Please do not ever encourage a child to sit or step up on a dog. This can cause pain, fear and conflict. All can increase the chances of a dog bite.

Is your dog “tolerating” what is happening in a situation? Or is the dog really telling them they're uncomfortable and want this to stop? We encourage families to observe their dog's body language so that they can understand what their dog is telling them.

How do I know what to look for if they’re uncomfortable?
❗Half moon eyes, your dog is leaning their body away from what is going on,
❗Yawning when they aren’t tired
❗lip licking

There are many body language signals that dogs display to us if they are uncomfortable, and even if they are enjoying something. Dogs use their bodies to communicate discomfort, stress and joy. Maybe they are happy and content and come over to you while you are holding your baby and get some pets, or they are happily wagging their tail with a loose body.

Recognizing how your dog uses their body to communicate is an important way to build and strengthen bonds.

April is Dog Bite Prevention month, or as Jennifer Shryock, the founder of Family Paws, likes to refer to it.. ! 🐕

Dogs do speak to us, it's our job as pet parents to learn how to listen to them! Expanding our dog aware skills is so important, and something that we should push ourselves to continuously do!

I am always trying to learn more, and stay up to date on the latest research. I don't think you should ever get to a point in your life where you feel like "you know it all". We can always learn. I do this to not only benefit my dogs and my family, but also all of the amazing dogs and people I get the privilege to work with!
