Birds in care update: Lollie

This is sweet Lollie. Lollie was surrendered to us quite severely plucked, and had also chewed her skin and caused wounds on her body.

Lollie has been in care for 3 weeks now, and has come such a long way! Lollie is on some medication to assist her with the urge to chew at her feathers and skin, and has had a huge reduction in self mutilating behaviours. Lollie was introduced to a few other cockatiels in care today and seems to be over the moon! Singing and even begging for head scratches. It will still be some time in care before Lollie is able to be placed up for adoption, but we are over the moon with her progress so far!

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT -
JUST KEEPING A LOST PET THAT YOU HAVE FOUND SOMEWHERE IS *LITERALLY* STEALING SOMEONE'S PET.

We've had several people recently flat out refuse to either
▪︎Hand a found bird into us (we're fully registered)
or
▪︎Just give us the name of the vet clinic they claim that they intend to hand it in to, so that we can contact the vet to organise intake if they are unable to find the owner through their vetrinary channels.

These birds then end up not being handed in anywhere, dissappear off the face of the earth and then we have to deal with owners trying to claim birds who were never actuallly handed into care despite our best efforts at trying to explain and cajole.

It's all extremely upsetting to be honest.

LOOOKING FOR MY FOREVER HOME: Echo

Echo is a sweet, but sassy female cockatiel. Echo is tame, though is very independent and full of attitude!

Echo loves a good head scratch, on her terms of course!!

Echo loves being involved in the everyday routines of the home, and enjoys time out of the cage with ger family.

Echo is on a diet of vetafarm nutriblend mini pellets, a small amount of seed, and fresh fruit and vegetables. Echo prefers leafy greens such as kale and spinach. Echo will need a home dedicated to maintaining a great diet.

Echo requires a spacious cage full of natural branches and foliage, as well as toys for enrichment. Echo requires a home that can provide her with plenty if out of cage time.

Good evening wonderful followers!

We are posting tonight with another request for donations.

This beautiful boy is Roy, he was surrendered a few months ago. With his previous owner, he was seen at our vet clinic for some liver issues, which have been under veterinary treatment since that time.

Today he had another check up to get some repeat medication, and the vet is concerned abhighhigh water intake, and that it could possibly indicate some kidney problems.

He needs to have some tests done, which means radiographs and some blood work.

We have been estimated between $695 and $863. After all of Magoo's recent work, we just don't have the funds currently.

If anyone would like to donate to sweet Roy's vet work, I'll leave the bank details below. All donations over $2 are tax deductible as we are a registered ACNC not for profit charity. If you'd like a tax receipt for your donation, please reach out in our messages and we'll do it ASAP.

Looking for my forever home - **Frederick**

Fred is looking for his new forever home!

Fred has come a very long way since being in care, thanks to the wonderful carers who have poured their time and love into this sweet boy. Frederick came into care quite afraid of, and aggressive towards males, however, with some wonderful work from his carer and her partner, he is now much more accepting of males, however he will take time to adjust to new males.

Fred requires a home where he can be the center of attention, and involved in the everyday happenings in the home. Fred loves a good cuddle and really enjoys his toys and foliage.

Fred will require a home that is dedicated to ensuring his enrichment is kept up, as he gets bored easily. Fred requires someone who is confident, and willing to provide him with a large cage, fresh branches and foliage, toys and a diet of fresh fruit & veg, vetafarm pellets and a small amount of seed and nuts.

Looking for my forever home! **Gary**

Gary is a sweet, tame Galah who enjoys spending time out of the cage and exploring (particularly loves walking around on the floor).

Gary's ideal home would be somewhere he can safely explore the floor, be involved in family activities and have a wonderful large cage to stretch his wings and play in when he is unable to be with the family.

Gary is slowly being transitioned from an all seed diet, to one that incorporates fresh fruit and vegetables, and pellets, and thus will require a home dedicated to continuing with the transition to provide a good foundation for future health.

Gary requires a cage large enough to have plenty of enrichment (toys, foliage), natural branches and space to flap his wings should he so choose too.

Hello world! My name’s Floyd and I’m searching for my forever family!

I’ve lived my whole twelve years with wonderful humans who, through no fault of their own, can no longer offer me the out of cage time that I need to thrive.

I’m not scared of moving house. I have a history of coping really well with change, new people, and new environments. When my humans have been overseas, my birdie sitters have found that while I start out kinda quiet and observant, within a week or two I’m completely myself and zipping around happily to make it to a shoulder or a nice high spot to observe my domain. Once I’m in a routine I really take to it and will let ya know in no uncertain terms if you’ve forgotten something. Gotta keep these silly humans in line sometimes, amirite birds?

I’m totes cool with all the dogs and cats I’ve ever met (even when the cat isn’t cool with me), but very young children put me on edge, as they can be quite grabby and unpredictable and my relationship to hands isn’t straightforward. I’m generally more a a fan of toes, but I’ll step up on your hand if you’re nice to me. Just keep those movements nice and slow and, being a smart and alert cookie who is highly food motivated, I’ll be easy enough to train further if required.

I don’t just love food for food’s sake, I also adore company during meals. If you won’t give me a bite of what you’re eating I’ll take matters into my own talons, go fetch myself a bit of food from my house, and come eat alongside ya. Eating alone is no fun, after all… You’re welcome!
Another thing I love love loooove is baths! I’ll bathe every single day if a human is kind enough to give me fresh water.

While I may not enjoy being stuck in it all day, I do actually love my cage and when given freedom I will often opt to spend a lot of time in and on it. I also very much enjoy a couple of hours a day in there on the balcony soaking up the vitamin D and fresh air. My cage is even more fun with foraging toys, love getting my beak into ‘em to find the food inside so I’ll need a steady supply of those please!

My current family takes beautiful care of me. I’m glowing with health, get regular check ups at an avian vet, my talons are kept beautiful and trimmed, and they have me on the optimal diet - LOTS of fresh veg, some fruit, nutrient pellets, and a limited amount of seed each day.
I need a family who loves me and cares about my health enough to commit to maintaining these wonderful standards of care to which I am accustomed.

I live in the Blue Mountains, but if you can offer me a place in your heart and home my humans are more than willing to travel to make it happen. I mean, of course they are, I’m worth it, right?

Shoutout to all our wonderful vet science staff, from receptionist to surgeon, you are all so essential to the work we do. Thank you. We appreciate you.

“Every Time”

Every time you say vets are money grubbing or ‘too expensive’ or just in it for the money,

Every time you decline all diagnostics, yet demand to know “what’s wrong with my pet”,

Every time at a social function or other completely inappropriate place you find out that someone is a vet you ask them for free advice about your animal,

Every time you feel justified posting a s&^**y practice or vet review when everything was done according to the standard of care but your pet died anyway,

Every time YOUR lack of preventative care resulted in your pet’s early death, yet you blame the veterinarian,

Every time she gets in early and stays late and works an 80-hour week because your pet that had been ill for days suddenly becomes an emergency at 5pm on a Friday, and you demand to be seen, claiming these heartless vets won’t treat your baby,

Every time someone complains about the cost of veterinary care, comparing human medicine and insurance subsidies to pet ownership,

Every time someone doesn’t pay their bill and thinks they are entitled not to because pet ownership is their “right”,

Every time someone walks in to a clinic and threatens to “sue your ass if you make one mistake with my baby”,

Every time a graduate vet looks at the hundreds of thousands of dollars in crippling debt and listens to clients driving Mercedes and BMWs complain about the cost of a spay using good anesthetic care and adequate pain management,

Every time – You are part of the problem.

The problem is suicide in veterinarians. Most of us went to veterinary school because we care. We have a calling to care, but there is a dark and expensive cost to compassion.

Think before you act or speak.

Magoo, the blind cockatoo, resdiscovers a life worth living!

This is the moment Henry (white face) met his new best friend forever today. Henry lost his partner not too long ago and was quite depressed until his owner got in touch with us. Martha (grey tiel) has just arrived to her new forever home and we think it'll be a happily ever after 😍😍

We are at The Station, Newcastle today for Street Paws Festival! We're selling bird safe toys and treats, and Mumble and Widget are hanging out as well. Come and say hi!

📛📛📛 We hope everyone is keeping cool in this weather 🥵 There's been some nasty bushfires around the area today and the last couple of weeks. We want all our followers to know that if anyone needs help with their birds in an emergency, to please contact us. If you need to evacuate your home with your birds due to a fire, please contact us! We have a number of carers around the area who can accommodate birds temporarily and care for them in an emergency. We would hate to see anyone have to leave their feather babies behind because they have nowhere to take them.
