IMPORTANT MESSAGE:

Hello wonderful supporters! Unfortunately, the team are at max capacity and the intake messages just keep piling up.

For the wellbeing of our team, and the birds currently in our care, we unfortunately need to close our doors to intakes for the next four weeks. After the four weeks are up, we will reassess our position and provide an update!

Fingers crossed we can get some wonderful birds into their forever homes this month :)
We really appreciate your patience and understanding as we close our door to intakes temporarily for the very first time since we were established in 2020!

If you have any emergency situation, please feel free to reach out, we will do our best to point you in the right direction :)

SERVICE DAY NEXT SATURDAY (12th) Apologies for the delay, we've been contending with sick adults AND toddlers over here the last few weeks.

The service day is being hosted in Aberdare this round.

NHVBR is pleased to announce that we now also offer quick and non-intrusive treatments for parasites such as worms and mites.

Appointment required for PBFD tests, but otherwise just rock up between 11-2.

All are welcome, but as this is held at a private residence you'll need to shoot us a message for the address.

Little Mali the love bird is just adorable to look at... and she knows it.

Her history with ALL but our most experienced carers reads something like a scene straight outta Monty Python:

TIM: There he is!

ARTHUR: Where?

TIM: There!

ARTHUR: What, behind the rabbit?

TIM: It is the rabbit.

ARTHUR: You silly sod!

TIM: What?

ARTHUR: You got us all worked up!

TIM: Well, that's no ordinary rabbit!

ARTHUR: Ohh.

TIM: That's the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered rodent you ever set eyes on!

ROBIN: You tit! I soiled my armor I was so scared!

TIM: Look, that rabbit's got a vicious streak a mile wide! It's a killer!

GALAHAD: Get stuffed!

TIM: He'll do you up a treat, mate.

GALAHAD: Oh, yeah?

TIM: I'm warning you!

ROBIN: What's he do, nibble your bum?

TIM: He's got huge, sharp-- eh-- he can leap about-- look at the bones!

ARTHUR: Go on, Bors. Chop his head off!

BORS: Right! Silly little bleeder. One rabbit stew comin' right up!

TIM: Look!

[squeak]

BORS: Aaaugh!

[dramatic chord]

[clunk]

ARTHUR: Jesus Christ!

TIM: I warned you, but did you listen to me? Oh, no, you knew it all, didn't you? Oh, it's just a harmless little bunny, isn't it? Well, it's always the same. I always tell them--

ARTHUR: Oh, shut up!

TIM: Do they listen to me?

ARTHUR: Right!

TIM: Oh, no...

KNIGHTS: Charge!

[squeak squeak squeak]

KNIGHTS: Aaaaugh!, Aaaugh!, etc.

**ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT - AVIARY PAIR**

Rocky (mid 30s) and Rosie (10) had both spent a lot of time alone until they found each other. We're SO chuffed to see them both finally make a proper friend!
They're now nicely bonded, absolutely loving life together, and in search of a forever home to call their very own.

ROSIE is a gorgeous girl who can be a little choosey about which humans she likes, but is delighted to step up, talk your ear off, and bask in lots of love if you can prove to her that you're a good 'un.

ROCKY is a real character who adores a good head scritch, but watch out! This opinionated boy will often give a decent nip to signal when he's had enough of ya 😄

REQUIREMENTS

UNDERSTANDING

Rocky & Rosie will get on best with humans who make the effort to understand them as the complete and fully-formed individuals that they are.

Applicants should either

▪︎ Already have a good grasp of galah behavior and body language.
OR
▪︎Have some parrot experience and be keen for the challenge of a significant learning curve.
All parrots use their beaks to communicate their big opinions, so your learning curve WILL involve getting bitten, just comes with the territory.

ENVIRONMENT

Proper aviary life that will support Rocky & Rosie's long-term physical and mental health includes:

▪︎Good space for proper exercise.
▪︎Regular fresh foliage (and native blossoms when available)
▪︎Multiple activities such as swings, climbers, and a variety of toys.
▪︎Mitigation measures for temperature extremes.
▪︎Predator-proofing *especially* against med-lge rodents.

DIET

The optimal galah diet includes

Unlimited
▪︎Vetafarm or Passwell nutrient pellets
▪︎Fresh veg
▪︎Grass/grass seed (optional but very beneficial)

Limited
▪︎Processed seeds
▪︎Fruit

Cockatoos often get downright dangerous when hormones spike.
The psi capabilities of those beaks put pitbulls to shame.

During certain natural hormonal fluctuations, even the sweetest individuals can become instinctively compelled to "lash out for no reason".

*Spoiler Alert - There's always a reason*

There's the obvious possibility -
When feeling uncomfortable in their own skin, they simply act accordingly.
But also.
They're kinda just naturally lurrrve-bitey during courtship and mating periods.

And boy oh boy, have we been landed with a boy who looooves his carer. You know who you are, stay safe out there 😅🙏

My name is Shoshana, and I'm one of the sweetest little conures you'll ever meet.

I'm the dream family bird.

Unlike most of my conure cousins, I'm not nippy at all!

I have JUST enough sass and opinions to be delightfully engaging, but in general I'm just super friendly.

I adore all the kids I've met, and get along wonderfully with most adults.

I step up and handle beautifully.

All I want in life is to hang with the humans, soak up the love, and be in on all the action, mischief, and fun.

I'm everything everyone SAYS they want in a parrot 🥺

The team was so excited to put me forward.

At least a dozen humans in a row now have rejected me outright without even bothering to meet me first 😥

At first, everyone gets really excited!!..Then they find out that I had a bit of trouble with my hormones once.

Thing is, ALL parrots are extremely hormonal beings.
ANY parrot can develop a hormone disregulation at ANY time.
Our bodies sometimes just need a bit of help to regulate themselves.

The fact that I needed an implant once, means that odds of needing one again are a bit higher than usual.

It hurts my heart that so many humans don't value me like they do their dogs and cats.
Many seem to think that parrots should just be "cheap pets".
To them, our health and wellbeing isn't even worth the bother of paying for a consult, let alone any actual treatment.

**This is a huge reason why the majority of parrots in domestic situations don't even come close to reaching their life expectancy 💔🦜**

So yes, I have a slightly higher likelihood of a big vet bill down the line.
That doesn't make me ANY less worthy of love and proper care.

IF I need it... and that's an IF...
It's gonna be roughly $700.
Y'all spend that on your mammal pets if it becomes neccesary, right?

SO WHERE ARE ALL THE RIGHT KINDS OF HUMANS?

They do exist, they MUST be out there somewhere.

The right kinds of humans are actually prepared to accept that my body is atypical, and love and value me regardless.

The right kinds of humans know that my happiness and wellbeing is worth much MUCH more than any *potential* Avian Vet bill.

The right kinds of humans are the ones who actually bother to read a few paragraphs about an animal before jumping in to offer a home. So the code word is '700'. Include it in your initial message, and the team will prioritise you.

The right kinds of humans know how precious and priceless I truly am.

SWEET SUCCESS STORY

This is Violet. She was surrendered in February 2024 as her aviary mate had died, and her owners were worried about placing her with another lorikeet as she is very special - Violet is completely blind.

We took her into care and she was placed with our amazing president (and lorikeet enthusiast) Laura. Although Violet gets around very well when she knows her surroundings, she was extremely timid to start with, and was not tame at all. Laura's dedication to her birds and the bird's in her care is nothing short of incredible.

Over time, Violet became used to her voice, and then her touch. It has taken quite some time to get to this point, but as you can see, Violet is now THRIVING in care with Laura. She gets excited when she hears her voice, and loves nothing more than a cuddle.

She will likely always remain in care - unfortunately not enough people are interested in adopting lorikeets, let alone one with special needs that requires the time and dedication that Violet does.

We're extremely proud of both Laura and Violet, and this is just a testament to the work we do here at NHVBR.
