Available for adoption: Poppy

Poppy the eclectus parrot is a guarded but sweet girl. She’s over a decade old and will need a confident, trauma-informed carer to be patient with her and win her trust. She experienced fear around hands and has what we suspect to be an adverse past before coming into care some time ago. Like all parrots, she will need someone who isn’t scared of copping a bite or two. She hardly steps up without a munch in the process to feel more in control. She wants to trust but needs it won with consistency.

Since Poppy has been in care, she’s learned to stop plucking, eat her fresh fruit and veg daily, fly with greater skill and improve recall. She enjoys spending time on shoulders/chatting and singing once she feels comfortable with you.

Diet:
Fresh fruit and veg with paradise/b-calm pellets.

53 birds saved this year!

It's a bit less than last year, but this year, we were working very short staffed. Our vice president has been on maternity leave after giving birth to her baby girl in February, and we unfortunately had a couple of coordinators resign for personal reasons. We did manage to onboard some amazing foster carers through the year, whom we are so grateful for. We have also been working on a lot of assisted rehome cases, the numbers of which aren't represented here.

NHVBR is forever growing, and we are so proud of what we have built. We appreciate all our followers, supporters, foster carers, and coordinators so so much.

Have a safe NYE, and we'll see you all in 2025!

***UPDATE - We've recieved a few wonderful offers of help. Admin is SO stretched we only have time to chat properly to a few people at once about this. We'll turn the comments back on when we get a chance to breathe.
THANK YOU from all the gorgeous birds in need***

Y'all, we're drowning in rescue birds over here and desperately need an extra pair of hands.

Our admin person is spewing to announce that she can't keep up with her favorite part of the job - Creating proper bird profiles and adoption spotlights.

If anyone is having a quiet one this year and wouldn't mind helping out at an animal rescue, shoot us a direct message ❤🦜

That's Life recently wrote an article about our amazing president Laura! We're so stoked to have this representation of all the hard work we've put into this rescue, but especially Laura's hard work. She is the backbone of this rescue, and we wouldn't be where we are today without her tenacity, passion and belief that we can do it every day.

Love you Laura!

UPDATE:

Little Holly saw the wonderful vets at Sugarloaf today, and we're very pleased to report that they are quite happy with how she looks, despite everything.

She has another appointment on the 24th to recheck the eye wound, but they believe it's a lot less of a worry than Magoo's eyes were a couple months ago, and she may not need surgery on it if we can get the infection out of it.

She'll stay on the pain relief and antibiotics for now and we will reassess on Tuesday, fingers crossed she won't need to have surgery 🤞🏻

Thanks to everyone who donated, we have more than enough to cover the current bills especially if she doesn't need surgery. We appreciate all of you and so does Holly!

WARNING: Graphic photos nested

This sweet girl came to us today after being handed in to a local veterinary hospital on the 9th. We believe she has been attacked by wild birds as one side of her head was covered in a thick crust from a wound, she is missing lots of feathers, and she occasionally has a neurological head tic.

We genuinely thought she may need to be euthanised when we saw photos/videos of her, but seeing her in person, we think she has a good chance. She is rather lean (82g), indicating she may have been out for a little while before being found.

She was given pain relief on admission, and the wound was bathed with some warm salty water to remove the crust and see what was going on underneath. Surprisingly, the crust came away very easily. However, the eye underneath is in bad shape and likely isn't viable. She's also been given antibiotics and the eye wound covered in an antibiotic eye ointment until we can get her in to see our avian vets.

She is a very friendly girl who still has some sass, and is eating and drinking well otherwise. With some care we believe she will bounce back.

She has been named Holly, for Christmas.

We know it's the wrong time of year to ask, but any donations towards her vet care would be so appreciated. As a registered charity, we can provide tax deductible receipts for donations over $2, and if anyone would like to make a donation in someone else's name for a Christmas gift, we would be happy to make a little gift receipt for them.

ATTENTION 🦜

Hi supporters and followers,

It has come to our attention that an individual stating they are a bird rescue is posting in local groups, specifically some Maitland community groups. Be aware that this person is known in Australia wide bird rescue circles as a scammer, and is from the Western Sydney area, not the Hunter Valley.

We are the only registered bird rescue in Newcastle and Hunter Valley region, and whilst anyone can take in birds (and other animals), actual rescues are established with registration details publicly available on the ACNC and demonstrate transparency around how they operate.

We can assist people in finding reputable rescue services Australia wide via our connections, and we would always advise people to do their own research into any rescue before providing support - whether that be financial or otherwise.
