Did you know a horse's winter coat will grow according to the light? In late August and early September, the light starts diminishing so the horse is not exposed to the sunlight for as long during the day. Nature tells the horse's body that it needs more hair to keep warm during the coming winter nights. Plus the extra fluff is so cute!

While engaging in equine-assisted therapy, clients will learn to recognize how a horse’s behaviours might be due to their own emotional signals—a client who is angry or anxious, for example, may see the horse pull away or otherwise respond negatively. This “mirroring” process is thought to help the client identify what they’re feeling and potentially modify their emotions for the better, all in a nonjudgmental environment. Equine specialists may also promote the practice of mindfulness, or focusing on the present moment, when the client is interacting with the horse.

Equine-assisted therapy sessions are now available for individuals, couples and groups at 78 Portage Road. Home of the J&H Ranch!

During an equine assisted therapy session, the client will typically engage in basic caretaking activities with the help and direction of a horse handler. Afterward, the therapist and client will discuss what occurred, what was learned and what behaviours inform therapy goals.
