We are sad to announce that due to severe compassion fatigue, Turtle Shire is retiring. This is one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make and it has been a long time coming. Remaining supplies and monetary resources will be donated to local animal shelters and turtle rescues around the country. Thanks to all our generous supporters who made this work possible. Together we have saved hundreds of turtles that will prosper and reproduce, adding even more turtles to the ecosystem. Turtles forever!

Welcome Chewie and Edgar to the Shire! Chewie survived a dog bite, and Edgar was found on the roadside. Edgar is our first musk turtle, and he's full grown at four inches long! Send healing prayers and good vibes for these sweet turtles.

A healthy dog is a curious dog. Someone got curious about Frederick and accidentally punctured his shell! But Frederick is feisty and will recover soon.

Frog and Feisty both encountered dogs but some kind rescuers brought them to the rehab! Right now, Frog is huddled up under some grass and Feisty is busy trying to escape the hospital.

Thanks to several recent donations, we've been able to order some medical dressing for Lucy (who is missing the keratin covering of her shell!) and we can take her to the vet! There is also enough money left over for another visit to the vet when someone needs one. Thanks to everyone who has donated! Meet Chewbacca, who survived an encounter with a dog. He lost the back of his shell and that will not grow back, but the exposed tissue will harden to a skin-like texture. Send prayers and healing vibes for him!

This fearless box turtle was found crawling through a parking lot. Someone has written on his back in sharpie! A turtle's shell is living tissue and is used to soak up vitamin D. Blocking the sun's rays leads to metabolic bone disease and death. Spread the word... don't write on turtles!

Meet Spooky! Spooky was rescued by a kind-hearted family when their neighbor decided to move and tried to "release" him into the winter weather. His flaky skin is due to prolonged dehydration. Now he's soaking in his water dish, waiting for the warm spring when he will be released!

A painted shell is a death sentence for a turtle. Without the ability to absorb vitamin D through their shells, turtles develop metabolic bone disease and die. Fortunately this one found her way to Turtle Shire, but others are not so lucky. Spread the word -- don't paint turtles!

Decorate with care!

Are your Halloween decorations wildlife friendly? Protect wildlife with your choices and look closely when passing outdoor decorations to ensure no animals are ensnared. Many innocent critters are accidentally trapped in fake spiderwebs.
