Babette has that cute response when you scratch her spine near her tail. Precious Bobo used to do the same. We call it: “Lick the sky!”

Last year, we spent much of December, cajoling our kitties: “Are YOU the Christmas Cat?” Ultimately, Bobo was the obvious choice. He passed away one month and two days later.

This year, we decided to hold Christmas morning nominations with all the grown kids and do a bracket-style vote, with time to debate and lobby for candidates in their match ups.

It came down to a nearly unanimous decision for Babette as the 2022 Christmas Cat!

She seemed quite pleased with her victory, humbly accepting (and sharing) her crinkle carrot toy and taking her place in the throne box. Congratulations, Babs!!!

It’s amazing how well this old lady is doing! Barely a year after her brush with death at the Wichita Animal Shelter, Babette still lives with a variety of health issues (including FIV), but she’s absolutely thriving. In addition to being a total cuddle-bug, Babs is undeniably one of our most playful cats. She’s been attending to this particular toy for the last 20 minutes. 😁❤️😻🐈‍⬛

It’s been awhile since Babette checked in to say hello. But here she is! Hello, sweet Babs!

On Thursday it will be one year since Bobo came to us.

Next week will be two months since Babette arrived.

They are both absolutely darling, gentle, crusty, gnarly, affectionate cats. We love them and are so grateful to give them a home.

Last night I had trouble sleeping, so I drifted into the spare room where Babette has been staying. She was soooo happy to have company in the middle of the night. She basically snuggled up to my face and slept. ❤️

Bobo and Phantom, enjoying their nightly cheese.

P.S. Cats are generally lactose intolerant, so don’t feed them dairy unless they’re already FIV+, on their last legs, and just really really love the small, daily pleasure of shredded mozzarella.

Babette is chillin’ in her private room, getting used to human interaction and the sounds and smells of the household. She was NOT amenable to taking the oral meds she needs (doxycycline antibiotic and prednisolone steroid), so we’ll be regrouping on a plan for that. Very sweet girl who needs a little time and TLC.

Babette at the vet! She purred and made biscuits throughout her exam. Things look good for her. Dr. Jou thinks she’s young — only 2-3 years — and is optimistic that a steroid shot and some antibiotics can help with her handful of issues (paw ulcers, crusty skin, upper respiratory infection). Babette will always be a little ragged due to her FIV+ status, but she should have a great healthy life ahead. Since she is so much “better” (for lack of another word) than expected, we might even be able to adopt her out to a wonderful home of her own. I didn’t really imagine that was going to be in the cards for her. ❤️

It takes a village.

And sometimes it takes multiple villages.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Wichita, Kansas, and it’s meaningful to me to be able to help another cat from the Kansas Humane Society. Working with multiple advocacy agencies and compassionate volunteers is inspiring. The amount of effort that several people put into helping this one, basic, stray cat over the past 72 hours is humbling — the shelter advocate, the temporary foster, the person who took the cat to the vet, the transport coordinator, and the four individual transporters who each put their day on hold and made trips of 4-6 hours to move the kitty across three states.

There is a lot we cannot do in this life. But we get to choose a few things we can say yes to. Babette is my “yes” for this season. Thank you to everyone who has nodded along with me.

OPERATION “Transport Babette” is underway! Will update progress in the comments with check-ins and photos along the way. She should reach us by 5:00 if all goes smoothly. Traveling mercies to the angels who are making this journey today, on behalf of one scruffy stray black cat, found in a field with injured paws. Love and goodness abound, y’all!

Babette had an initial vet visit today in Kansas — combo test (FeLV- and FIV+, but that’s okay), rabies vaccine and first FVRCP vaccine. The cost was $60. She’ll go to our local vet when she arrives to us, so that her paw issues and wonky eyes can be addressed.

So far, we’ve been gifted $130 in donations, so that’s helpful and really appreciated. It means especially much since the donations have come to my personal account in small amounts from strangers all over the map: Baltimore, Denver, Chattanooga, Washington State, Houston, Wichita, and British Columbia, Canada!

Thank you for being part of the beginning of a happy ending!

The Wichita volunteer who sprung Babette from the shelter for us last night is actually an Animal Control Officer with a heart for helping. Babette is spending two nights with her and taking a trip to the vet before she hitches a ride to Texas tomorrow.

Here is the ACO’s experience with Babette, immediately after picking her up from the shelter.

I am amused and delighted that the cat was “disinclined” to stay in its box; chose, instead, to “take a seat;” and also was unfazed by her new travel companions.

This is the cat we are calling BABETTE. She was found as a stray in a field in Wichita, Kansas, and picked up by animal control. She has ulcerated paws — a condition we are pretty sure (from photos) is “plasma cell pododermatitis.”

O’Malley Alley Cat Organization has tagged her, and she was moved from the shelter into a temporary foster home this evening, thanks to a partner rescue in Wichita, before she travels to us in Texas on Friday.

I cannot justify using our local cat rescue resources to pay for bringing a cat from Kansas when we have so many local we aren’t able to help. But this cat is special to my husband and me, so we are planning to care for her ourselves, as our own.

Hopefully, her condition can be treated with medication. She’ll need to be spayed and vaccinated. If we’re lucky, the costs will be only a few hundred dollars, but we won’t know until she arrives and is evaluated at our vet. I will update this page, ongoing, just as I have with Bobo, and will provide documentation of her vet expenses and any financial support we receive on her behalf.

Several people have already offered to help, and we appreciate that so much! Donations specifically for Babette’s care can be called into Starnes Animal Clinic (903-561-3211) or sent via PayPal to me at [email protected] or by check (I can send you my mailing address). And I’ll see if I can attach a FB fundraiser here for folks who find that easier.

Stay tuned for more stories about Babette!

Bobo has some news.

A couple days ago, we were contacted by Wichita Shelter Cats Needing Immediate Help . This group provides advocacy for animals in the Kansas Humane Society / Wichita Animal Shelter.

They tagged us in a post regarding a female cat who is a strong lookalike for Bobo. The cats are unrelated, but the visual similarity was so interesting that she thought MAYBE we might want to take a chance on helping this kitty, too.

I showed Bobo her picture, and where do you imagine this storyline is heading now…?

This is one happy, scruffy, relaxed, low-maintenance, lovable cat. There’s no news to report. Bobo moves in slow motion, falls asleep while eating at his food bowl, and would be content to be held for hours. He likes to wrap his claw-paws around your finger or hand. Sometimes he sneakily moves in and nibbles slowly at your ankles if he wants food or attention. Hard to believe he’s been with us for 10 months. Health-wise, he’s no worse than he was when he arrived. Just holding steady. We love him. He knows it.

It’s been 8 months since rescue, and Bobo is still as happy as a gnarly ol’ kitty cat could possibly be. We love him so!

Nothing new to report. Bobo is so happy, and we love him so much. His eyes are still a goopy mess. His fur is kinda weird and matted. He sneezes stalactites of yellow snot... and then licks them away before I can jump in with a rag. Bobo remains the most easygoing and content cat I’ve ever known. If he could sit in someone’s lap 22 hours out of the day and then spend the other 2 hours hovering over a food bowl, his life would be complete. Bobo is an absolute joy in slow motion. We want him to stay just like he is, forever!

Bobo is hanging in there, and doing pretty well. He sure is an easy-going, slow-moving, content kitty cat! Tonight we have a new foster staying with us -- a kitty in pretty critical condition who may not make it through the night -- but when we brought Vincent to the couch to snuggle him while we watched TV, Bobo climbed up into a pile with us, as if to welcome Vincent and let him know he's in a place where he is safe and loved.

Last weekend, I was terrified that Bobo was preparing to say goodbye. He wasn't eating, was hardly moving, his eyes and nose had become so stuffy again. He did get an immune therapy shot on Friday (a week ago), but no further antibiotics. By Saturday night, I was ready to try anything, so I found some leftover zenequin (feline antibiotics) on hand. Just three tablets, but I googled and felt confident it wouldn't hurt him, and it might help. I managed to stuff one pill down him Saturday night. By Sunday morning, he was ready to eat breakfast. He followed me around, engaged a bit with the other cats. Sunday he reluctantly took another pill but then threw it up 15 minutes later after it was half dissolved. Still, his progress continued. Monday and Tuesday, I gave him half pills. Now it's Saturday night again and, so far, he's regained his previous s***k. (This is a relative term, of course, but it does involve him eating and ambulating and generally engaging with us in an alert and purposeful way.) We sure do love our Bobo. So glad he's rallied and found his second wind.

Sweet Bobo has slipped a little bit in recent days. It's been three weeks since his last immune therapy shot and almost that long since he's been off antibiotics. He's going in for a shot tomorrow and we'll see about restarting some kind of antibiotic treatment. He showed some progress with the aggressive approach early on, but he never fully kicked his stuffy head URI, and it has been incrementally getting worse again. This week, he's lost his appetite and lost some weight. Since FIV has basically obliterated his immune system, we knew it might not be possible to get him back to stable health, but we'll see what ideas his vet has for us tomorrow. He's still the sweetest, most gentle boy, even when he's not feeling good.

This is as playful as I’ve ever seen Bobo. 😄

It’s a gift that he simply comes out to hang out with us in the kitchen during dinner prep. He sleeps a lot, eats slowly and steadily, and has the most agreeable disposition ever. His health expectations are unknowable, but he is completely content and very loved.

Bobo is feeling relatively better. At least well enough to get bored in his 5’x7’ bathroom. So he has been invited out to join the general population of our home menagerie. Bobo is so chill that I don’t think any other cats have even batted an eye as he’s slowly cruised the space and found some favorite resting nooks. We didn’t want to stress him as he’s rebuilding his immune system, but he seems completely unfazed and fully content. Next shot will be mid week. Feeling hopeful that this course of action can give him a new lease on life!

(P.S. In the photos, his neck looks white, but that’s just where he was shaved for the last blood draw. He is solid black with significant red undertones that make him appear rather brown in certain lights.)
