Prairie dog General Personality

PDs can be affectionate and loving pets if cared for properly and acquired at the right age. Daily handling and bonding is crucial in the first few weeks after you receive them to ensure proper socialization. It is relatively easy to bond with a new baby but is very challenging if you receive an older adult who is not bonded to you. Each PD can have their own personality but generally they are attention seekers and affectionate with their humans. They have spunky and bold personalities that are unlike many other small rodents.

Bonding with a prairie dog

It is imperative that you receive a young, hand raised baby before the age of 10 to 12 weeks. Under 10 weeks is optimal, as it allows appropriate bonding time for your new baby. You will need to spend a considerable amount of time with your new baby for the first few weeks of their life to create a strong bond.

What do prairie dogs eat?

Pet prairie dog Diet- Over 90% of a PD diet should consist of Timothy Hay and fresh grasses. Hay is important nutritionally as well as physically because it helps their teeth wear down the correct way. As rodents, their teeth grow continuously so they must wear them down daily.

The other 10% consists of a variety of other foods, treats and protein such as veggies, fruit, grain, and insects. Avoid dried corn.

Good treats include carrots, sweet potatoes, zucchini, corn, apple, kale, parsley

Good proteins include mealworms, crickets, or dry kibble dog food.

Avoid feeding them dry corn, chocolate, junk food, sweets

Prairie dogs should be offered large and unlimited amounts of fresh timothy hay.

As rodents, their teeth grow continuously so they must wear them down daily by chewing hay and cubes. They are relentless chewers and can be destructive if not given enough appropriate items to chew.

Water from a bottle should always be available.

WHAT ARE LEMURS?

Members of the primate family, lemurs are long muscular animals that live in the jungle of Madagascar. They have plush fur and long hanging non-prehensile tails. Most domestic lemurs are about the size of a domestic house cat.

Lemurs are intelligent and have very distinct personalities. When raised in an appropriate environment a lemur can be an enjoyable companion.

BUSHBABIES AS PETS

Bushbabies are one of the most specialized species we raise here on the ranch. Bushies are little one-pound nocturnal small primates that can jump higher than 5 feet straight up. They have bold personalities that require their caretakers to keep them on a healthy 24hr routine. Bushbabies have pros and cons. Some pros are they are super soft, sweet-smelling, hearty, and affectionate; some cons are nocturnal, expensive diet, and in the primate family.

Bushbaby personality, what are bushbabies like?
The bushbaby is not similar to a dog or a cat, or really any other animal. During the day bushbabies sleep and are very quiet. They prefer to be left alone although I wake mine up every morning for a quick breakfast which they wake up for and go back to bed. You can interact with them during the day for small intervals (less than 1 hour) and let them go back to bed after. Keeping them up too long during the day is not good for them, do not attempt to transition your bushbaby from nocturnal to diurnal. In the evening your bushbabies will be very active and will be more willing and happy to play.

Considerations for temperature and proper food are important. They each have their own personality but in general, Bushbabies are extroverts who prefer to sleep or cuddle during the sunlight hours and will be active and more interactive at night.

WHAT IS A MARMOSET 🐒❤️

Marmosets are the smallest members of the primate family. They are intelligent and deceivingly adorable. They are popular as pets and are often referred to as "finger monkeys" although they grow to be bigger than your finger at adulthood. They are not easily adaptable to situations and like to stay in a predictable state. They are very dominating to each other and hierarchy plays a big part in their social structure as well as when kept as a pet.
When kept as companions marmosets are most frequently rehomed because of improper training which leads to biting and other bad behaviors. They need commitment like a newborn baby.

What do Fennec Fox eat?
Pet Fennec Fox Diet- A Fennec Fox natural diet consists of small rodents, insects, birds, eggs, and rabbits. A captive diet consists of half a cup of Blue Buffalo cat food kibble, chicks, raw or boiled eggs, fruits such as apples and bananas, crickets, mice, and raw meat.

Fennec Foxes can’t have chocolate, fruit cores, artificial sweeteners, or grapes. You should feed your Fennec Fox twice a day, as overfeeding can lead to serious health issues. Do not free-feed your juvenile fennec fox. You should be feeding portioned sizes.
