CARE AND NUTRITION

The Basset Hound is an unusual breed, there are also weaknesses in dogs. Particularly careful attention requires the spine due to the structure of the body. Our Mission

Our Basset Hound Story starts in 1989 when I bought my first Basset Hound, Floyd instead of an air conditioner. Good Move!! It changed my life.

Through the years I have noticed the different quality of Basset Hounds. It is our mission to make a better hound available to folks. Soundness, good health, temperament, breed standard. We pay much attention to nutrition. It is our intention to send people home with a happy, healthy Basset Hound puppy. A sick pup will cost you way more in the long run than one that some may feel is a little high priced. A lot goes into putting good and healthy Basset Hound puppies on the ground. Basset Hound nutrition and needs are different from other breeds. It’s really important to stay in touch with your breeder so you will have the most positive experience possible. As breeders we will continually reach out for bloodlines and show points in the lines for continued improvement of the Basset Hound.

Our Bassets are our family. We love them for the individuals they are. We breed ONLY Basset Hounds and for that reason we are able to give total attention to our Bassets. Nutrition is very high on the priority list. From conception our Basset babies are nourished with the very best nutrition has to offer. Moms are on NuVet Plus throughout and as soon as our puppies can begin to eat, NuVet is put into their Formula. This is a supplement that strengthens their immunity.We have eliminated what used to be commonplace ailments in their infancy. So Much is affected with our protocol.

Wormings begin at two weeks of age and every two weeks rotating meds as to remain effective. Vaccinations are up to date and No puppy will leave here before NINE weeks of age.Later if we need be as our first concern is the well being of Your new Baby.

Our puppies are learning to housebreak starting at three weeks old through natural access and instinct. They get their exercise in stages as they develop. Many puppies are about the same but some will vary. So we follow their lead.

Does my puppy come with a health guarantee? Yes! We do extensive health testing on our dogs. While this does not guarantee that your puppy will never have any health issues, it does give them the best start to a healthy life. We guarantee your puppy to be free of any life-threatening congenital issues for the first year of life.

Can I bring my puppy home before the 8 week pick up date? Absolutely not. No puppy will be released before they have reached eight weeks of age. . Also, many important milestones are met in the final weeks of weaning that are important to your puppy’s development and social wellbeing. We work with your puppy from its first days of life. We do early neurological stimulation beginning from day three. Studies have shown this to strengthen body systems, allow puppies to develop greater tolerance to stress, and stronger immune systems. Your puppy will come home to you used to being touched, handled, and groomed and accustomed to the daily sounds and commotions of family life!

What criteria do you use when determining who to breed? The breed standard for the Basset Hound should always be a starting point when choosing dogs to pair for a potential mating. In a perfect world, all dogs would be perfect examples of the breed standard. We know this is not the case so we carefully evaluate our dogs for their strengths and their faults. A basset with long, velvet like ears, abundant wrinkles and pretty coloring is a wonderful thing! It’s not such a wonderful thing if mom and dad are carriers for glaucoma or produce puppies with extreme joint deformities! The Basset Hound Club of America recommends that all breeding dogs be tested for the following: Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG), Thrombopathia, a genetically inherited bleeding disorder, and Mucopolysaccharidiosis (MPS1). We test all of our breeding bassets for these disorders to insure that we never breed two animals together that could pass on these issues to your puppies.

May I come visit your farm and play with my puppy before the eight week pick up date? Unfortunately, no. This may seem harsh, rude, or like something an internet scammer would do. It is not. It is to keep your puppy and all of our other puppies healthy. We take biosecurity on our farm very seriously. Parvovirus is highly contagious and can spread through direct or indirect contact. It can live indoors for up to a month and outdoors for many months given the right circumstances. People handling puppies can unknowingly spread the virus to puppies with their hands or clothing. Puppies are most susceptible to parvo from six weeks to six months of age. Puppy picking will be done from photos, videos, and Face time chats. When it is time for you to pick up your puppy you can be assured that we have done everything possible to give your puppy its best, healthiest start in life. We will be more than happy to share our veterinarian’s contact info as a reference!

What will my puppy bring home ?
Your puppy will be ready to head to its new home at eight weeks. At this point in time it will be up to date on all shots and worming and you will be provided with these records. We will send you home with a goodie bag complete with the food your puppy is used to eating and a blanket that smells like its mom and siblings to help with the transition. Your puppy will be microchipped. You will be given the paperwork to complete your puppy’s AKC limited registration at this time and a contract of sale.

Why are you breeding dogs when there are so many dogs in shelters and rescues? This is a great question! We agree that there is an abundance of dogs and puppies in shelters. (One of the best dogs we ever had was a chocolate lab that was turned in by family members when his owner had to go to a nursing home.) Shelter dogs are not for everyone though. When there is no idea of parentage it is hard to predict the size and temperament of a dog. Rescue dogs sometimes have been surrendered due to ongoing behavioral issues. These issues may or not be disclosed and though with the proper attention and training can most likely be worked through, not everyone is willing or able to handle the task. All of our puppies are sold with a spay/neuter contract and limited AKC registration. IF FOR ANY REASON DURING THE LIFE OF YOUR BASSET YOU DECIDE THAT YOU CAN NO LONGER KEEP HIM OR HER WE WILL TAKE YOUR DOG BACK. We do not want our dogs adding to the burden of rescues or shelters. We will do all we can to find a loving, appropriate home for all of our bassets at any age.

Do you deliver puppies? This depends on your location. At this point in time with Covid restrictions, we are not comfortable shipping puppies by air cargo. We are more than happy to meet you at the airport and give you your puppy to fly home in the cabin with you. Please contact us if you have questions about travel and shipping and the costs associated with this service.

Are Basset Hounds easy to train? Well, no. They are not the easiest dogs to housebreak and train. They are certainly not the hardest either! The key to working with bassets is patience and consistency. Bringing a puppy into your family is much like bringing a human baby home. Raising a puppy requires puppy proofing, patience, encouragement, time, love, more patience, knowledge of the stages of puppy growth and development, and a nice sense of humor. Every good dog is the product of good breeding, proper health care and nutrition, and appropriate training and guidance.

All puppies purchased through our website are covered with at least a 30-day health guarantee by the Dog Breeder. If you have questions about what is covered, please view the Law associated with your state.

Within ten days of purchasing your new puppy, you must take him/her to a licensed veterinarian for an examination. If the veterinarian determines, within ten days of purchase, that your dog is clinically ill or has died from an injury sustained or illness likely to have been contracted on or before the date of sale and delivery, you have the following options:

Retain the dog and receive reimbursement for reasonable veterinary fees, not exceeding the purchase price.

Return the dog for a complete refund.

Return the dog for a replacement dog of equal value.

These options do not apply where a seller, who has provided a health certificate issued by a veterinarian, discloses in writing at the time of sale the health problem for which the buyer later seeks to return the dog.

If within 30 days of purchase, a licensed veterinarian determines that your dog has a congenital or hereditary defect which adversely affects the animal’s health or that your dog died from a congenital or hereditary defect, you have the same option as outlined above.

You must notify the seller of the examining veterinarian’s name, address & phone number within two days of the vet’s certification of your dog’s illness. Failure to notify the seller within two business days will result in forfeiture of rights. Each state has different laws related to the sale of a puppy; please educate yourself on the laws in the state which you purchase your puppy.

Each state in the U.S. has different guidelines in regards to guaranteed health for sold puppies. For states that do not have a mandatory health guarantee in place, any breeder advertising through our site is expected to cover the health of their puppies for at least 30 days. In the event that a state guideline is in place offering a guarantee longer than 30 days, that law holds precedence.

*Some breeders offer extended guarantees on their puppies. It is not legal for a breeder to offer a health guarantee that is not at least equal to state law. For a more detailed description of extended genetic health guarantees, read below.

Extended Genetic Health Guarantees (when offered)

An additional guarantee specifically covering any disease or illness that is proven to be of a genetic origin through proper veterinary examination and testing.

These guarantees do not cover normal veterinary costs incurred while providing general care for the puppy.

Proper documentation must be provided to the breeder before any compensation being paid.

This guarantee does not cover any costs incurred related to injuries caused by owner negligence or accidental injury.
