Also known as land turtles, tortoises are found on all continents except for Antarctica and Australia. With nearly 50 species spread across more than 15 genera, tortoises vary widely in terms of size, color, and other features. Many exist only in the wild, but some are kept as pets. Several species are considered endangered to some degree, but conservation efforts have helped increase populations in some cases. With an average lifespan of 80 to 150 years, tortoises are the longest living land animals on the planet.

Hydration when it comes to keeping tortoises is super important. Hydrating your adults is just as important as hydrating your babies. For the babies as I show in this video , I soak for about 30-40 mins daily in direct sunlight . They are constantly being monitored , so that I can change the water and make sure no ones flipped . You can soak daily ( like I do ) or three times a week ( this would be the minimum / recommended) . ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT THESE TORTOISES CANNOT SWIM, so don’t DROWN them! Soaking is a key component to proper growth . Soaking must be done for tortoises being kept both inside and outside . Soaking allows you to monitor your tortoise and ensure proper hydration. Hydration is key. Even when the sun isn’t out, soaking is just as important!

The African spurred tortoise is the biggest tortoise from the African mainland, with only the giant island species of Galápagos and Aldabra being bigger. This tortoise of the desert is well camouflaged with its overall sandy colors, having thick yellow-brown to golden skin and a brownish shell. Its wide, oval carapace shows noticeable grooves at its front and back edges and noticeable growth rings on each scute, which become marked, particularly with age. Large scales that overlap cover the front of the forelimbs, while the rear surface of the thighs have two or three large spurs of a conical shape, which gives the species its name.

Tortoises live a long time and people's lives change. When they can no longer take care of their turtle or tortoise we are here to help. We are located in Northern California. We have gotten tortoises from 35 states.
Text Katie at 530-941-0544 to surrender your tortoise.

With roughly 80 in the Sanctuary and over 700 already adopted in 5 years, we have come to the conclusion that this is a much needed rescue. We are one of the largest tortoise rescue in the US.
