Every year, as Easter approaches, there are advisories against purchasing rabbits—often impulse buys with tragic consequences--we're expanding those warnings to urge against buying and releasing domestic ducklings, for the same reasons.

On Talking Animals Radio Show, airing Wednesdays, at 11am, my guest this week is John Di Leonardo, president of Humane Long Island, and overseeing its international Duck Defenders project. "With Easter days away, [Duck Defenders President John] Di Leonardo has a final message for animal lovers: 'Ducks and chicks are not school science experiments; they're not Easter photo props.'

'They're not trash to be discarded when you don't want them anymore. They live 10 to 20 years. So if you're going to get one of these animals, you should always adopt, not shop, and be sure that you know what you're getting into."

Humane Long Island is warning animal lovers not to impulse buy baby birds for Easter, as the shelter is caring for hundreds of birds bought on a whim and then abandoned
