New planned litter! We will tentatively be doing a repeat breeding of Gil x Benevolent Bella this spring. Their 2022 litter was spoken for very early, and produced some really handsome, well-boned pups. Gil & Bella should be bred in the spring, with pups due in early summer near Clear Lake, Iowa, and ready for new homes in late summer.

Maizel was bred to Gil in early March and pregnancy has since been confirmed. If all goes well, pups will be born in Faribault, MN around May 3, and ready for new homes in late June/early July. We will be reaching out via email beginning this week to the first few people on our waiting list to see who is still interested.

Another OFA Excellent out of the Gil x Daisy litter! Ziva got her hip & elbow evaluations this week. She will tentatively be bred this spring.

I recently had someone interested in breeding their dog, so I requested they get the hips x-rayed. Their vet could immediately see that the dog was severely dysplastic, so this dog obviously won’t be bred.

So far, there have been three prospective breeders whose dogs’ hip X-rays showed mild to severe dysplasia. None of the three dogs showed any outward signs of lameness, so the x-ray results were both surprising and devastating to their owners. Had these people unwittingly bred their affected dogs without x-raying, an estimated 50% of the puppies could’ve wound up dysplastic.

While x-raying hips of breeding stock is not a guarantee that future generations will be free of hip dysplasia, it is the only tool we have to reduce the incidence in the breed. So, it’s vitally important to get your pup from a breeder that screens hips on both sire and dam.

Of the three above-mentioned dysplastic dogs, two came from breeders that don’t screen hips.

“I wanted to drop you a note and let you know how much I'm enjoying my pup out of Gil and Maggie. I'm floored by how fast he is learning. He has now worked ruffed grouse and woodcock, sharptail, and had one trip to a game farm. I'm planning a trip for wild pheasants in December.

He is retrieving very well and most of the time is naturally holding point until I flush the bird and shoot. All of this at 7 months!

On top of this he's an awesome family dog and is great with my kids.

I'm looking forward to getting a second brittany by the time he's around 4 years old.”
