Years ago, my German Shepherd wore a backpack and carried groceries home for me. When years later I put the backpack on Dexter, who outweighed her by about 24 pounds, he wouldn't walk. So I got out of the habit of asking my dogs to help me tote things. My service dog, Ziggy, always wears a vest with pockets and carries pick up bags and mad money, sometimes a rubber duck for a spontaneous game of fetch. But more than ever, I feel the walks we do now are for his pleasure. I only ask him to be polite to other dogs and not to pull too hard. Nowadays, annoyed at having to pay for even a paper bag to carry home my groceries or my sushi take-out, I use my Ziggy and Scout tote, on sale, washable, the perfect size for whatever you buy. So one day I started making bookmarks. Each one is an original signed drawing (except for one that I forgot to sign), then laminated so that it will last and last and with a colorful "tail" to prevent it from slipping through the book and losing your place. I showed them to Ryan and he said, "How much can you charge for a bookmark?" I said they were worth $500 each. I should know - I made them. There was a long silence. Very long. So we decided to use them as presents. Order any two of our dog lovers' products, get a free $500 bookmark. While they last. Or you know me, when they run out, I'll make more.

Even when you're just out for a stroll with your best friend, you never know what my occur to you - you might remember that you're out of ice cream or that you need paper towels or that you'd love to have mashed potatoes for dinne rand you don't have any potatoes. Today I am doing a final touch-up on one of our winter notecards. Sometimes I get what I am after on the first try. Other times, it might take days of drawings until I am happy. For this card, there were endless sketches and then three finished drawings. In the end, Ryan and I both like the same one best, number 2 of 3. At Ziggy & Scout, we think ahead and try to figure out what you'll want in the months to come, what might make you smile, what might fill a special need. Here's a snapshot of my first drawing. Keeping the one we like best as a surprise!

So here is how we chose the mug. Ryan picked one for its shape. It has good proportions, good lines and is pleasing to the eye. It's clean looking. Sleek. A sample was sent to me and I began to use it for my morning brew. I often carry my cup, along with my phone, a pen, a pad to lean on and the NY Times puzzle over to the couch where I sit and do the puzzle before starting work. This mug has perfect balance. Even full, I can carry it with one finger, which is often all I have available. So I designed the drawing to wrap around the mug - you will love it. But wait. It won't be available for another couple of weeks. Good things take time. And you know me, I'll be sure to tell you the minute it's ready to go. Oh, and here is Ziggy on the bus since, of course, I don't have picture of the finished mug.
