Bocephus says health testing is boring, but she passed her auscultation with a cardiologist and her CERF eye exam with an optamalogist today. We have exciting plans with her soon. Watch for an announcement. 😉

Message from the Iowa tracking teams. As the temps cool down and rut heats up here are some important things to remember:

1. Be Honest - just because you broke one of the rules/tips below doesn't mean we won't track for you, but we may want to set things up differently for a better chance at success.
2. Call (or better yet text) before you think you need us. We aren't here solely to track deer but we are happy to give advice and share our knowledge of tracking and recovering deer. I also say text because many of us work outside of deer tracking and I can't always answer the phone, but can return a text. If you do need us, the sooner we make contact the better the chances of getting you scheduled. If you text or call be patient waiting for a response. If I'm tracking for someone else I won't answer a call/text. You would expect that same curtesy. Check the featured post of trackers: https://bit.ly/4hxcHhV . These guys have the experience and knowledge to help you. We know the laws in Iowa.
3. Wait times - these may seem like longer than you want to wait, but they will help ensure your deer is dead and recoverable aka not bumped and especially not bumped on to property that you can't get permission for the dog or even yourself to track on. If you don't see the deer fall give it time to die.
4. Moisture - we are finally starting to see some rain in Iowa. This may make some people worry because it washes away blood, but these dogs can track without visible blood. In fact, the moisture will help improve tracking conditions.
5. Stop at last visible blood. See number two and six.
6. Don't grid search - it is so much easier and quicker for a well trained dog to run a clean line than you and your buddy or buddies to walk around everywhere trying to find the deer. If we can't find your deer then by all means call all your friends and grid search.
7. It's okay if you don't know where you hit the deer. It's not just "bad shots" that need a dog. See the picture below of my first recovery. This BUCK was shot through the heart and still managed to go over 660 yards. The rut will do crazy things to these deer. As trackers we've seen deer die from shots they shouldn't and survive shots they shouldn't.
8. Dogs and handlers aren't perfect we may leave a deer in the field. Believe us when we say this sucks just as much for us and our dogs as it does for you. Please follow up with your tracker on non-recoveries (if you see it alive or find it dead). This helps us learn to read our dogs better and improve for the next hunter.
Stay safe, have fun. Happy hunting!

Today the human had dropped the article prior to Nadia getting out of the car (Rock Creek Timber). The human was a little more hidden. We also did some obedience work. Kylie Sevening was working on teaching Nadia how to down.

Congratulations to Jet and Andy for running their Natural Ability test with the Buffalo Ridge Navhda today. At less than 5 months old they achieved a 107 Prize I. This is Apple River's first bred by dog to achieve a prize I and they did it today under hot and windy conditions. As Andy says, now it is time for hunting season!

Completely forgot to post this video here. Last weekend was a great event with Patriotic Puppy Program at Kirkwood. We had a good time with our pups. Here is a search with Nadia. This toy was placed about 20 minutes before we let her in the room. It was strategically placed based on airflow (return duct and air diffuser), knowing she would have a bit to work through. She is doing great at her age.

Some people are jealous of their friend's vacations. I'm jealous of my puppies. Check out these pictures of Jett in Montana killing it on wild Hungarian partridge at just over 4 months old. Great job Andy!
