On 13 June, we were alerted to a pair of guinea pigs living right outside a landed property, facing the main road. Our hearts sank when we saw the photo: a makeshift metal-meshed enclosure that offers zero protection from Singapore’s scorching sun, torrential rains, harmful pollutants, and even predators on the prowl.
SPCA was contacted immediately, and an inspector was sent to the scene to advise the owner. Though it felt like a long shot, we were hoping that the pigs might be surrendered. Unfortunately, the owner not only declined this proposal, but also refused to bring them indoors.
A GPRS volunteer visited the next day and confirmed the alarming conditions, which you see pictured above.
Today (16 June), we received word from SPCA that the owner is now willing to bring the pigs indoors. While it’s a small relief, we can’t help but worry: Will the owner be true to their word? Will the guinea pigs be placed back outside later? Even indoors, will they receive the care they truly need?
GPRS would like to remind everyone why guinea pigs should never be kept outdoors:
1️⃣Extreme temperatures: Guinea pigs are highly sensitive to heat and humidity. Singapore’s climate puts them at constant risk of heatstroke.
2️⃣Sudden storms: Heavy rain and wind can cause hypothermia or illness if pigs are left exposed.
3️⃣Predators and pests: Cats, birds, snakes, and even ants pose real threats to their safety.
4️⃣Pollution: Vehicle fumes and construction dust can harm their delicate respiratory systems.
5️⃣Neglect: Outdoor pets are often out of sight, out of mind, leading to delayed care or unnoticed illnesses.
