I have never know Rescue so quiet. Hardly any offers of homes.
Apart from the Rescue dogs abroad who are still waiting - forever, it seems - we now have many dogs born in the UK whose owners can't manage them or have changed circumstances. Even a 6 month pedigree that should have had 20 people biting my heels only raised a thought......
When I started rescuing from abroad - of dogs we never met before they arrived in the UK - adopters were open hearted and really wanted to help a dog who had been neglected and cast out.
Gradually as more dogs became available adopters wanted more information about them, and we had to get rescuers on the front line to take better photos, and more of them. Which takes time, during Covid with staff and volunteers movements resectioned there was no time for anything but hands on caring for the dogs.
During Lock Down I was inundated with younger people who were suddenly working from home and wanted a GWP rescue. Many had only had a dog while they were growing up in a family and usually a Lab. I didn't home any rescues during lockdown to anyone who had not previously had a Wire or currently owned one. At least our adopters knew what to expect as getting home checks was impossible, our home checkers are encouraged to help when the dog arrives, even just walking together.
With Covid, Brexit, Ukraine and now a recession the cost of transport has risen a lot. I hate asking for adoption fees but professionals need paying and food must be bought. In comparison the ridiculous price of a puppy hit £2,500 – we could have saved three dogs for that – but it has bottomed out to £1,600 for a standard pedigree with health checks.
Our breed is hindered as it does require a mature person who has time and inclination to keep training for a well balanced dog. Leaving Wires in kennels, with dog sitters, using dog walkers is not recommended for most Wires as they get bored and play up, and if behaviour is not nipped in the bud it can easily become a problem.
Rescue dogs from abroad really do seem to be less messed up in behaviour, they might have been thin, diseased, neglected esp with human contact but as soon as these things are resolved they just want to please their owner. They don't seem to have Separation Anxiety, chewing, stress, resource guarding issues like UK born pups have. Having lived in compounds in large numbers with all kinds of other dogs they rarely have natural aggression.
Winter is coming soon and we have many dogs abroad who are now facing being unadopted until the spring with more dogs coming in, I have been having to say no lately and hope other rescues have picked up the slack. All dogs, all rescues, all groups are affected. The pressure is on and the only solution is to start putting older and less perfect dogs to sleep on the front line.....which would be an economic decision and break many volunteers. All the countries that we rescue from are poor Bulgaria, Spain, Serbia, Greece, Italy.....everyone is affected by the Ukraine war....even that wealthy country Germany!
I urge you to support our Breed, our Group, our Club in anyway you can. I know we are all being careful with our money, but please don't waste any.....please get your head in gear and don't buy anything for your dog this Xmas and donate that money to our Rescue. Your dog really does not know what the date is, let him play with a cardboard box and clear up the mess afterwards, don't spend £10, £15 plus on a toy that will be broken before the New Year....or a new collar just because it's Xmas......ps smart leather collars smell as they rot....they were traditionally used for gun dogs as polyethylene wasn't available (£6 lasts forever).
We are taking orders for our Calenders now.......send in photos of your dog and feature in it.
Please be proactive in your support, we don't use GoFundMe or GiveMe as they do take a fee. Every cent you donate is spent directly on GWP dog care. All the work is done by volunteers.
