Betty White was a pioneer for animal rescue! She especially loved dogs, reptiles and birds. In honor of the please consider making a donation to a local 501c3 bird rescue or sanctuary in your area!

We have a little cockatiel here that we named Betty White when she came in early last year because we said she was “small and spunky and we wanted her to live forever”. We knew she would likely outlive the real Betty White, her namesake, but did not know it would be so soon.

Happy Birthday Betty White!

Listen very closely and you’ll hear Bindi make the MSN messenger alert sound from the 90s during her bath. It always makes me laugh when some of the senior birds mimic nostalgic sounds. One of our senior macaws mimics an old dial up modem connection!

Bowie is a 17 year old blue and gold macaw who needs a very quiet home preferably without children or other birds, or with one other similarly sized parrot. Bowie is an EXCELLENT talker and loves to hang out with his people for talks and cuddles. Bowie is not a fan of chaos or other birds, although he tolerates their presence. He takes a long time to warm up to people and prefers women over men. He does not like children.

Bowie is a sanctuary bird who we believe has made enough progress to live in the perfect home. We will be very picky with finding the right home for Bowie. Bowie will be kept perfectly comfortable and loved here if the perfect home doesn’t come along, but if we feel there is a home better suited for Bowie than the sanctuary we would love to see him flourish.

Please message us if you believe you may be the perfect home for Bowie.

Bubbles is an 18 month old pacific parrotlet who has finished her evaluation period and is now up for adoption.

She is incredibly sweet and friendly and loves to cuddle, preen you and play. She LOVES swings. She is more tolerant of other bird species than most parrotlets but would need to be supervised as this can be a very domineering species with other small birds.

Bubbles loves riding in your hood, pocket or sweet shirt and will hang out for hours with you. She is very quiet and perfect for apartment dwellers.

If interested in adopting bubbles please send a message and we will send you an application.

ADOPTED!

Bingo is a beautiful 2 year old peach front conure who has finished his evaluation period and is up for adoption to his new home. Bingo loves to hang out with you, sit on your shoulder and watch TV, play tricks and games and talk to you. He is very talkative and loves learning new words. He is very smart and loves trick training. He does not like being pet or snuggled, but he steps up without hesitation and very much enjoys hanging out on your shoulder or head. Bingo has been around other birds and children and would do well in an active home. We would not recommend bingo for an apartment as he is a typical conure with loud vocalizations.

If you are interested in adopting Bingo please message us for an application and interview.

Hi everyone!

We appreciate the recent influx of messages and calls regarding willingness to adopt birds, so I just wanted to post a quick message with some commonly asked questions:

1) yes, we do sometimes have birds for adoption, once they have gone through an evaluation period and quarantine.

2) yes, we do charge adoption fees. The adoption fees we charge help us with the expenses of the sanctuary birds and vet care/food for everyone. Please know it is *very* expensive to care for a large flock of birds! Adoption fees range from $40-$2000.

3) no, we do not have a spot where you can view all of the adoptable birds. If you are interested in learning more about our adoptable birds please send us your email and we will send you an application. Once you have completed the application process we will notify you if a bird comes in that would be a good fit for you or let you know if we have a bird available already. It is hard for me (there’s only one of me!) to wade through a ton of different people asking about each bird rather than having a group of already approved applicants to match.

4) the vast majority of the birds here have medical/behavioral problems that mean they will stay here permanently.

5) yes! We are looking for volunteers. Please let me know if you are local and would like to assist with caring for the parrots.

Edited to add:

Congratulations to lovely little Bynx on finding her forever home!

While most of the birds who come here are here for good due to behavioral or medical conditions that make them unadoptable, we do occasionally get birds who go up for adoption. Bynx was one such lucky girl!

Did you know that macaws mate for life and are monogamous?

Barbosa (greenwing) and Blooey (blue and gold) are the two oldest birds at the sanctuary. We aren’t positive on their ages but going off of family history we know that Barbosa is over 50 and Blooey is likely in her 30s. Previously it was believed that Blooey and Barbosa were both male, however recent DNA results show that Blooey is actually a female! Meaning these two are a true mated pair, although never producing offspring.

Barbosa is a wild caught greenwing, and the tendons were cut in his wings in a form of pinioning done many years ago by hunters and poachers to prevent captured birds from flying. He also has significant arthritis due to his age and the fact that he is unable to move his wings naturally. Holding his wings at an unnatural angle for most of his life has caused arthritis in his wings, but also causes significant balance issues (birds use their wings to steady themselves) and arthritis in his legs and feet from having to struggle to balance.

Blooey was surgically pinioned- which is where a small section of the wing is removed surgically so that flight feathers will never grow.

Neither bird can ever fly but they have each other and will remain together for the rest of their lives.

Blooey and Barbosa were blessed that they had a very loving owner who kept them in the same home for all of their adult lives, unlike some of the birds in sanctuary who have been rehomed many times in their lives. They came to sanctuary because their owner has unfortunately passed away; a situation that often results in these large and very long lived species ending up homeless.

Bonded pairs such as these are a different type of challange to keep in a home, as their monogamous bond does not allow them to bond with humans the same way that non bonded birds will. While they will allow me to approach and will step up if coaxed, we will probably never be able to pet them and biting/striking is always a strong possibility.

The best we can do for them is offer them a safe place to live out the remainder of their years together, with large outdoor enclosures to get fresh air (and a safe indoor enclosure of course for nights and poor weather) and proper vet care and diet to support their aging bodies.

Barbosa and Blooey are in their 40-50s and recently lost their beloved owner. Luckily they have each other to help them through their grief.

Rescue is TOUGH. Some of these parrots that come to me come from neglect or abuse situations but some of them come from homes where they were very well loved but their owner was no longer able to care for them. With macaws who can live to be 80+ years, they often outlive their owners or their owners age out of being able to care for them properly.

Bowie is one such bird, a blue and gold who has lived for nearly two decades with one owner who he was very bonded to. When he first came in he was extremely terrified of every person he met, and just us walking by his cage would result in panic/alarm cries and fleeing. He bit... and he bit hard!

He still bites, he’s still terrified, but he’s making a lot of progress in a short time. He’s talking, he’s coming to the front of the cage for me, he’s accepting head scratches and snuggles. Twice I’ve been able to pick him up to move him out of his cage so I could clean it, and although both times I got bit he eventually settled down.

It will take Bowie a long time to understand why everything has changed and that his routine and his bonded partner is no longer an option for him. He will grieve, he will call for her, he won’t forget. But he will adjust, and I’ll support him while he does so, and he will make friends and hopefully he will want to leave his cage soon and join in on outdoor play time and free flight inside.

In the mean time, step by step.
