Horse on a budget Caring for horses can be messy and expensive. My philosophy is a more holistic approach, return to nature.

I would like to share my personal success and failures, hacks and tips in hopes to lower the cost, but still provide exceptional care. Comparing commercial products and methods to homemade recipe potions and mixes that have been proven to work. Also sharing good ol' farmer's tips to make farm work smarter, not harder.

Thrush and “The Magic Goo”

Originally introduced by hoof guru, Pete Remey, as “Petes Goo”, proven itself many times over. My favorite go to Goo for deep thrush treatment. Bit messy but very effective.

Deep central culcus Thrush
(first off, throw away the purple and green stuff. It is to harsh, to aggressive, kills new soft tissue, which creates “food” for the invading organisms. It has been banned in some countries. Gentian violet (the purple stuff) is carcinogenic, a mitotic poison) rather try “The Magic Goo”

Ingredients:
50/50 mixture of
Triple antibiotic ointment
1% Clotrimazole, Athletes foot cream

Put in syringe. (Don’t fill the syringe too much, you want to be able squeeze it with one hand into the crevices) A little goes a long way.

Magic Goo on “steroids” will give you anti-fungal, anti-bio topical treatment that can be used on various issues. Such as Pastern dermatitis, Scratches, Dew poisoning, Mud fever)
Ingredients:
- Clotrimazole (athletes foot cream, antifungal cream)
- Neosporin (antibiotic ointment)
- 40% zinc oxide (baby butt cream, Desitin)
- 2 tsp copper sulfate powder

Mix about 8 ounces (250 ml) of zinc oxide, one tube (1oz) of Antibiotic ointment, one tube (1 oz) of Athletes foot cream and copper sulfate powder (2-4 tsps) in a container. You can try to stuff it into a 1/2 inch syringe, but zip lock bag or put back into the Desitin container.

For commercial products out there, I have had a great success with Tomorrow Dry Cow, comes neatly packed in syringes with soft tips and Equiderma Zinc Oxide Paste.

Pokeweed poisoning.

Common plant out here in NC, Pokeweed, caused this beautiful girl Lo**ta some major discomfort and irritation.
Sprayed with ACV/BlueListerine and swelling went down almost immediately.

We are not sure if she got into the raw plant out in the pasture or in her hay. Either way, watch out for it, were glover while removing it.
