Tight Bonds
Those of us who photograph wild horses experience firsthand the deep bonds these treasured animals share with each other. Do the horses sometime change bands and do stallions move on and create their own bands? Yes. But I've also seen wild horses who've spent years and years together and that bond should never be broken by us interfering with their lives on the range. Keep them safe, keep them wild, keep them free.

"The Waders"

Part of the joy of spending time with the wild mustangs is to see them doing the every day things. Chilling with friends, playing, sparring, and wading along the rim of a very inviting watering hole. These two sweeties paused just long enough for me to get their photo before they went all in.

Ranger

It seems like with the passing of each year south herd bachelor stallion Ranger just keeps getting more and more handsome.

He's continuing to mature and fill out and the dapples spattering his shoulders and sides becoming more apparent with the close of each season. Ranger put up quite the fight earlier last summer to try to win a mare of his very own and did briefly steal Little Star days after the birth of baby Solly but then suffered a superficial hip injury as Avalanche stole her away. Even Avalanche couldn't keep her for long though and she returned to her girlfriends with her young c**t and travels with them still today.

Ranger however, after temporarily going off to heal his wounds, reunited with Apple and the two have been inseparable just like in old times. It'll be interesting to see how this year plays out for the small south Onaqui herd. With limited mares and a healthy population of bachelor stallions time will tell whether the main nucleus of mares gets to continue to travel together or whether they'll be split up.

Another wonderful memory from the McCullough Peaks Herd, wild stallion Warbonnet (BLM name Medicine Boy) one of my favorite wild stallions, small but mighty. He had a huge family before the 2009 helicopter roundup and sex-skewing weighting heavily toward stallions but never ended up with more than one mare, Sasakwa after that. It is cold days like today that makes me wish I had a warm coat like this little foal. He is a curly mustang sporting his winter coat. The curly mustangs are know to be able to withstand much colder temperatures than a normal horse. This really helps them in this bitter Wyoming cold. Salt Wells Creek
