Sometimes, when you contact me with an issue, the advice I give won't be a bit at all. Why is that?

Simply put - a bit can't fix everything. Some of the issues I've been contacted for have nothing to do with the bit, and I won't give you advice that is unsound. Some of these issues include:

- "they won't lift their shoulder"
- "they won't step under themselves"
- "they run through the bit"
- "they get anxious"
- "they don't understand contact"
- "they hollow through the back"

If the circumstances clearly point to a horse who is confused, in pain, or lacking in another area, I will not sell you a bit. I will pass you on to professionals who know more than me in those specific areas (bodywork, Saddlefit, dressage trainers, groundwork etc.)

Why doesn’t having an adjustable gullet saddle fix all your problems?

Unfortunately most adjustable gullet saddles have a gullet shaped like picture A so while they will go really wide there’s only a small contact point with your horse so they will be quite unstable. This is why you keep ending up changing gullets, put simply your trying to put a square plug in a round hole so it will be either too big or too small but will never be a perfect fit.
If your horse is shaped more like an orange 🍊 😂 then they need a saddle with a gullet shape that matches their back shape ( gullet B)you will then find even if your horses weight fluctuates a bit your saddle will still be an ok fit, if you put a round plug in a round hole it will either be a bit tight a perfect fit or a bit slack but in any of these cases will still look a better fit than a square plug in a round hole.

I know there will be people out there that love their changeable gullet saddle this is only my opinion, but a picture speaks a thousand words 😉

If you ride in a rubber or plastic bit then remember you should check it regularly for any damage. If you find damage then replace the bit straight away!

If the mouthpiece is damaged it could be uncomfortable in your horse’s mouth or it could break, as with the one in the photo.

If a bit does break while in use then make sure you check in the horse’s mouth for any damage.
