The new emblem for the military working dog program has been released. The symbolism it contains and the thought process behind the new emblem is really something, so we thought we’d share an excerpt from the official description:
The emblem is in the shape of an irregular pentagon in honor of the patches worn by Marine units during
World War II.
The red outline signifies the combat service in every conflict since their activation.
The three white stars represent the original three Marine Corps working dog platoons.
The Blood Stripe down the middle embodies the courage and tenacity of fallen handlers and working dogs in service to their country.
The Doberman, the original breed used by the Corps, faces to the left in homage to the legacy of
the program’s past.
The Belgian Malinois represents the contemporary breed of the Marine Working Dog. It faces to the right, maintaining an ever-watchful eye on the future of the program’s
success.
Embossed in scarlet across a golden banner is Always Faithful. This not only is the motto of the Marine Corps, but the way of life for its MWDs.
From the island-hopping campaigns of the Pacific to the jungles of Southeast Asia and the deserts of the
Middle East, the Military Working Dog served with distinction alongside its Marines.
No matter the clime and place, in times of crisis, the United States Marine Corps MWD remains Always Faithful.
