COLD WEATHER TIPS FOR YOUR PETS! ⛄️

❄️NEVER shave your dog to the skin as their coat provides extra warmth during freezing temperatures

❄️Wipe your dog’s feet coming inside to avoid sharp objects such as icicles or painful snow balls getting attached to their fur or even puncturing the paw (petroleum jelly helps)!

❄️Avoid salted or chemically treated areas that will tempt your pet to lick their paws which brings me to my next (watch antifreeze puddles)- they are TOXIC to animals.

In this digital age….let’s face it guys, social media isn’t going anywhere. It’s allowed me to connect with SO many veterinary professionals around the world and even made me a little bit money on the side 👀💰 Here are my three secret ingredients to build a following of any kind:
1️⃣ Know your WHY- What’s your story? what audience are you trying to attract?
2️⃣ You have to be CONSISTENT- this is the sure way to see your growth and constantly be building a ever-growing audience. Put yourself out there rather than showing up every couple of months.
3️⃣ Engage with your followers: comment on their pictures, anwser your DMs, reply to your comments, etc. This is how you build a community which is so much more important than follower counts.

⭐️ This year I move closer to the dream I have had as a little girl. ⁣

I may not be where I planned to be, but 7 year old Lindsey is still proud. Through the bumps in the road, we all should remember that we are living through a answered prayer as we speak. 🥰 ⁣

I posted a question a couple weeks ago about strategically placing your rotations around NAVLE and SO many of you reached out to me wanting me to share it so I just thought I would make it a post summarizing many of the responses I got: ⁣
⁣
1️⃣ 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐯𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞/𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐀𝐕𝐋𝐄. A huge plus with this is that you have OPTIMAL time to study uninterrupted but the con is if you only have one vacation block (like Purdue 🙃) there goes the vacation. ⁣
⁣
⁣
2️⃣ 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 “𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐲” 𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 (where you’re less likely to be on call or have a ton of patients to look after leading up to the exam. Ex: Diagnostic imaging, dermatology, etc. ⁣
⁣
3️⃣ 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 “𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐤” 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐀𝐕𝐋𝐄. Ex: if you’re a small animal person, schedule a large animal rotation, rotations/subjects you find difficult, etc. ⁣
⁣
𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞: Internal medicine, pathology, neuro, and cardiology, + large animal blocks as well. ⁣

Has anyone seen fluid therapy given to a horse?! It’s still crazy the MASSIVE amount of medication and fluids you give to a small animal vs. a large animal and it still surprises me to this day.⁣
⁣
That’s what we practiced today in Clinical Skills, along with blood transfusions in small animals. The classes we have now are really gearing us to be able to be a huge help when it comes to being in clinics on the hospital floor. This lab was even more convenient because 3rd years start treatment crew shifts next week and my first shift will be in the LARGE animal hospital! Treating live animals, not models- Wish me luck! 🤞🏾

This is Jace 🐶 ⁣⁣⁣⁣
He is our little 7 year old Maltipoo that has 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 had issues with his knee (I was the one who discovered his “drawer” from when he was a puppy) and he was diagnosed with luxating patella from a very young age. Something that is in the back of my mind when I leave for school is how our family dogs, including Jace, are slowly getting older. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
𝐎𝐧 𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞, 𝐝𝐨𝐠𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝟕 and they depend on us to stay on top of their health and catch diseases early on before they get worse and produce secondary issues. Thankfully, I found an awesome joint supplement to help Jace to help manage his condition and make him feel better!⁣⁣⁣⁣

Cleft lips and palates result from a failure of the hard palate to completely close resulting in the oral cavity communicating with the nasal passages. I got to watch this little one grow and thrive during my externship while his mom fostered him before his surgery and adoption to a loving home. 🥰 ⁣

I always get the question what vet students do during the summer before you hit the ground running in August with a completely new set of responsibilities as you are one year closer to getting that DVM. How do we keep our minds stimulated all that time we are away from school to ensure we don’t forget everything we learned?!⁣⁣

Sure, getting experience through externships and summer job opportunities is a great way to test our knowledge but I will give you guys a tip and tell you to always cement what you learned during the day by reading up on various cases through the many resources available for us veterinary professionals online. ⁣⁣

𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐬. ⁣

They are uncomfortable, heavy, and take awhile to break in! I am glad to say while I was in Las Vegas, I wore my shoes from EVERY single day for 6 weeks and I can honestly say they are a 𝘎𝘈𝘔𝘌 𝘊𝘏𝘈𝘕𝘎𝘌𝘙! 🙌🏾⁣

Not only are they stylish (they look just like gym shoes), but they are slip resistant (good for the mysterious fluids on the ground at a vet hospital), and they are easy to clean since they are water resistant! My hunt for some good shoes to wear during the long hours of clinics are over. ⁣

⚠️ 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐓 𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐊𝐄 ⚠️⁣⁣
While I was out west in Vegas, there were MANY cases I was not used to seeing in the Midwest and one of them was a real-life heat stroke case in April! This week marked the first month of summer so it is important to keep a cautious eye on our fur babies, 𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘺𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘤 (𝘴𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘥-𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘥) 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴! Ways to do this includes: ⁣⁣
☀️ NEVER leaving your pets in a parked car⁣⁣
☀️ Limit exercise to the early morning or evening hours when it is coolest! ⁣⁣
☀️ Provide plenty of water at all times ⁣⁣
☀️ It helps to shave pups with thick fur (such as Huskies)⁣⁣
☀️ Invest in paw booties for protection of their pads and to keep them from burning! ⁣⁣
