Celebrating Azuki's Journey to Remission 🎉🐾
In the realm of veterinary oncology, the journey of our feline patients can be both challenging and rewarding. Meet Azuki, a courageous 7-year-old female Domestic Short Hair diagnosed with aggressive gastric lymphoma. She presented with vomiting and hyporexia, and had a gastric wall mass measuring 2.44 cm in wall thickness and moderate anaemia (PCV of 12). 🐱❤️
Large-cell lymphoma in cats often carries a poor prognosis, with many cases resulting in euthanasia within one to two months, due to poor quality of life. However, with chemotherapy, 50-70% of cats respond to treatment and the median survival times ranges from 4-12 months. Cats that achieve complete remission can sometimes be cured. 🌟
We saw Azuki last week. She has been clinically feeling well during her chemotherapy treatment, but we wanted to check. Quick ultrasound of the stomach showed she was in complete remission, a normal stomach. When we first met Azuki, she was reluctant and scared to enter the vet clinic and she growled and tried to bite us. Now, Azuki enjoys her visits, waiting patiently for her treatment while savouring her favourite treats. In this video, she is snacking on freeze-dried egg and bacon treats from VNG and Churu from Cenvet Australia 🥓🐟
Chemotherapy is well tolerated in >80% of dogs & cats. Many people do not know this. Many pet owners think their pets will become sick with treatment. Many people including veterinary staff think that cats should not be treated because they will have a horrible time. For many pets this is not true, and we hope Azuki's story reminds you that with a great veterinary team who loves cats and gentle handling, cats can enjoy their visits and have a fantastic quality of life during chemotherapy. 🐾💪
We hope Azuki continues to do well. Stay tuned as we will update you again when she completes treatment in approximately one month! 📅

Meet Leo! 🐱 This brave and friendly cat has hepatic large-cell lymphoma with a total serum bilirubin of 181! Woah that’s high! 😮 Without treatment, median survival times are less than one month. With chemotherapy, most cats feel and respond to treatment, living on average an additional 3-12 months, and approximately 5-10% are cured with chemotherapy.
After just one chemotherapy session, Leo is happy and eating again! Huge thanks to Cenvet for the tasty treats that helps him take his oral meds easily.
Vets, nurses, and vet students: Interested in learning how to administer chemotherapy safely in pets with cancer? It's easier than you think.
