Before jumping to punishments like yelling or sq**rt bottles or air jail, try first to catify your environment. If your cat is acting out then they’re probably not satisfied in their environment. Change the conditions before you try to change the behavior! 9 times out of 10 (official science stat) behavior will improve with improvements to environment.

Dogs need a lot of sleeps. On average, an adult dog needs 12-14 hours of Snoozin’ and puppies need even more. Let them take undisturbed naps during the day and be sure to give them plenty of sleep at night. This is especially important in homes with human kids or homes with varied sleep schedules. Many behavioral issues improve with good quality sleep! I am also a dog and need 12-14 hours of sleep a day. So, bye, I’m off to nap with the dogs!

Willow went to dog gym for the first time yesterday! She was very brave while she tried the treadmill for the first time. Afterward, she got a little treat from for a job well done. And we took some cute pics at the photo booth! We’re in love.

Join me in celebrating through the month of January 2024! I support Forsyth Humane Society in celebrating the compassionate care of pets and the people who love them in Forsyth County. I love Forsyth Humane and I have especially loved fostering teeny tiny cutie patootie kittens through Forsyth. Here’s some of the cutest photos of foster kittens!

Cats need vertical spaces. Many cats feel safest when they’re up high. Other cats need to observe their queendoms from the tallest towers. Whether your cat is looking for safety or looking for the best vantage point to view her peasants, make sure she has options. Good options. What does a cat consider good, you ask?

We all live in an overly stimulating and unpredictable world. We can help our pets by creating more predictability in their lives. Try these three techniques to add predictability.
💙
1. PATTERNS OF BEHAVIOR: create predictable patterns for your pets. Try to feed them in the same place each day or let them nap at the same time each day. Make your own patterns predictable so that your pet can feel confident about your intentions.
💙
2. RITUALS OF CONNECTION: check in with your pet throughout the day and just hang out with them for a bit. Be sure to show them some love when you wake-up, leave the house, get home, and before you go to bed.
💙
3. COMFORTING EXPLANATIONS: talk to your pet. Tell them where you’re going. Tell them what you’re doing. Think about how scary it would be to never know what your partner/roommate/family member is doing day to day. Talk to your pets at the same level you would speak to a toddler. They understand you.

🐶 NEW MERCH ALERT 🐶

I've had some folks ask about OPS t-shirts/stickers/mugs, so I've added a "shop" page to my website where you'll find everything from dog bandanas (with rainbows and blue heelers, of course) to a limited-edition "boo" heeler sweatshirt designed by yours truly. 👻

This position is called a “sploot.” Splooting can help dogs stretch their back legs/hips and help them cool down. It is also theorized to be a sign of relaxation! Is your pet a splooter?

Special thanks to Samson for modeling an A+ sploot.

✨ BIG BOOM: DAY 4 ✨

We’re almost to the weekend!
Today, I talk about how to safely introduce your pet to the sight and smell of fireworks.
💙
Tomorrow, I‘LL BE LIVE ON FACEBOOK!
Please join me at 2pm so I’m not all alone. Okay, thanks. Byeeeee.

✨ BIG BOOOOM CHALLENGE: DAY 3 ✨

Today we’re giving out massages!
💙
Giving your pet a massage will help both you and your pet feel calmer and more relaxed.
Keep your hand open and gently do circles on their chest, side, or back. This technique will encourage your pet to take a deep breath.
💙
Continue with the firework sound conditioning by either increasing the volume or the duration of the sound. Remember to love at your pets pace.
💙
See y’all Friday at 2pm for a Facebook live where I’ll answer all your pet questions!

27/06/2023

✨BIG BOOM CHALLENGE: DAY 2✨

Today we’re talking about safety plans.
Safety plans are especially important for our sound sensitive friends. For your big boom safety plan I want you to answer three questions.
💙where will you and your pet be?
💙who will you and your pet be around?
💙what safety measure do you have in place?
Consider these questions from your pet’s point of view and make sure you have everything you need to keep them safe.
Now is a good time to check leashes, harnesses, fences, windows, doors, and any medications your pet may need.

You can also continue your sound conditioning from yesterday by turning up the sound just a smidge. Go at your pet’s pace and have fun!

See you tomorrow for day three! We’ll discuss relaxing massage techniques for your pet!

Don’t forget to join me Friday at 2pm for a Facebook live!

✨ Big Boom Challenge: Day 1✨

Hi! Thanks for joining me on this challenge!
For day one we’re talking about conditioning. Conditioning works by pairing a neutral stimulus (ie bell chime) with a reflexive stimulus (ie food) until your pet has a conditioned response (ie salivating) to the neutral stimulus. For this challenge, the neutral stimulus will be the sound of fireworks and the reflexive stimulus will be whatever your pet finds most rewarding. Keep the sound low and short to start.
💙
Play sound of fireworks —-> have fun!
💙
If you have a sound sensitive or traumatized pet, play the sound as low as possible and then calmly reward/reassure/relax with your pet.
💙
Have fun and I’ll see you tomorrow to talk about safety plans!
💙
Hope to see you all at my Facebook live Friday at 2pm to answer all your challenge questions!

25/06/2023

✨ Join me for the Big Boom Challenge ✨

The Fourth of July is coming. That means lots of bangs and big booms. It also means lots of stressed, confused, and runaway pets. More cats and dogs go missing this time of year than any other.
💙
To help keep your pets safe this year, I’ll be posting a video each day walking you through conditioning and management techniques. It will only take you about ten minutes a day!
💙
If you accept this challenge you will:
-learn conditioning techniques to practice with your pet each day
-develop a safety plan
-strengthen your relationship with your pet
-enjoy a stress free firework day!
💙
Check back here for a new video each day!

AND THEN JOIN ME FRIDAY AT 2pm FOR A FACEBOOK LIVE WHERE YOU CAN ASK ME ANYTHING! ANYTHING, ALL THE THINGS, LETS TALK PETS!! 🎆

12/05/2023

Are you feeling stuck in your creature’s training or failing to make progress? Most training is focused on teaching tasks such as sit, down, or come. But task centered training doesn’t take a creature’s needs into consideration. One of the most important needs is safety and creatures cannot truly learn unless they feel secure. Sometimes we as humans logically know that our creature is safe and we forget to listen to our creatures when they tell us how they feel.
💙
Just because a creature is safe does not mean that they FEEL safe.
💙
Help them to feel safe by meeting their needs. Their safety, emotional, social, and cognitive needs. When a creature feels that their needs are being met then training is a snap!
💙
If you need help with your creature send me a DM or check out my services on my website!

We diiiid it! Day three of the Dog Behavior Conference in the books! I’m tired but fulfilled. What a weekend! Thanks to Victoria Stilwell and all the amazing presenters!

23/04/2023

As promised! Here is a video of my Forsyth Humane Society foster kittens engaging in Free Work! I’ve been using Free Work in my training for about a year. Today, I got to learn from The Sarah Fisher herself who pioneered this technique.

Free Work involves placing novel and familiar objects in an area and allowing your animal to explore them at their pace. We can then observe and learn from them. What do you see from these kittens? In their movement? Their interactions with new items? Their engagement with each other? It’s amazing what we see when we simply spend time observing 👀 💙
