🧐 The @catsprotection Annual PAW Report highlighted the increasing number of caregivers are choosing to buy a kitten instead of adopting an adult cat. So I wanted to share the reasons we chose to adopt a cat as opposed to buying one: 🐈‍⬛ We had a better idea of what we would get: many adult cats come pre-packaged with their personalities, which a rescue centre or fosterer will be able to match to your lifestyle and expectations. Although this will undoubtedly change slightly over time, their personality is pretty much set in stone. 🐈‍⬛ We knew we’d receive support through adoption: Many adoption centres will be honest about behavioural or physical concerns with the cats in their care before you take them home, and will support you with advice and at times financial aid depending on the condition. 🐈‍⬛ We wanted to help a cat in need: many cats who find themselves in rescue centres do so through no fault of their own, we couldn’t bare to think of cats sitting in a adoption centre whilst we had a perfect cat-friendly home ready for them. 🐈‍⬛ We had pre-requisites: we wanted our cats to be home-bods and love cuddles. When we first adopted Bert, we only had a flat so had to have a cat who would be happy indoors. As he was hard of hearing, he fitted the bill on all fronts! Adoption centres will always advise on which cats in their care would suit your home and needs best, to ensure a happy feline family! 🐈 Are you unsure which cat is best for you? Who else’s cat seems to ignore the purpose-made resting areas you provide them? 🙋‍♀️ I may be a feline behaviourist, but in our house Mymbles does not conform to ‘gold star’ behaviour. Mainly, because she is a cat! She has her own gold standard of purr-fection that even her two most attentive humans cannot fathom. For example, why would she want this soft, plushy nook made from blankets and cushions when she could sit on her human who desperately needs a wee? #nationalhugyourcatday is tomorrow, but before we go squeezing a big one on our feline friends, let’s talk about consent. 🐈 Choice and control are crucial for upholding high standards of welfare for your cat. Whilst scooping them into a bear hug may feel good to us, it can be distressing to your cat as they are not given the option to choose this interaction. 🐈‍⬛ Some cats like a good cuddle, but even if your cat usually loves a hug, like humans, their mood can change. Mymbles loves a good snug in a dressing gown, but if I tried to bundle her in when she was watching the birds outside she would not be grateful, she would like feel frustrated at the restriction to her movement! 🐈 So what? You’re telling us we shouldn’t hug our cat?! Not at all, but let’s give them a choice as to whether they would like a cuddle or not. 🐈‍⬛ Well they can’t tell us… Not using their words, but we can ask their consent! Check out the video… 1. Offer your hand out to your cat and allow them to sniff it. 2. If they give it a rub, you can give them a little head scratch. After three seconds, stop and offer your hand again. 3. If they move away from your hand, don’t proceed to cuddling. Respect their decision and give them space. 🐈 Here, Mymbles gave a couple of quick pheromones and then turned her head away, so I didn’t give her any more contact. She had food provision on the mind, and was likely trying to appease me by acknowledging my greeting! 🐈‍⬛ Have you tried this with your cat?
