Disclaimer: we took the fleece out of the box because it’s hot, and she can hang out on the cool tarp for now. She will have bedding, not to worry.

The Irish Setter has been termed by artists to be the most beautiful of all dogs. Along with its appearance, the Irish Setter is described to be fun loving with a “rollicking” temperament.

Are you interested in this breed? The OFA, working with the Irish Setter Club of America, recommends the following basic health screening tests for all breeding stock:
- Hip Dysplasia (OFA or PennHIP)
- Autoimmune thyroiditis
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy (DNA test)

Dogs meeting these basic health screening requirements are issued Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) numbers. For potential puppy buyers, CHIC certification is a good indicator the breeder responsibly factors good health into their selection criteria.

For more information about the Irish Setter, please visit the parent club website: https://irishsetterclub.org/

The Irish Setter's lovable personality has endeared the breed to sportsmen and pet owners for more than 200 years. They are outgoing dogs who enjoy making friends.

LAST CALL!!!! We are drawing for these beautiful quilts today. The proceeds go towards the costs of attendiand competing in the AKC National Championship in Orlando, FL. Eli and Eleanor are two of the five juniors to qualify from Missouri!

Why does this seem so confusing??? Well, because it IS confusing.

As someone who has been competing in AKC events since the late 80s, I still struggle sometimes with reading the AKC Rules and Regulations. This is why I chuckle when people say, "it's all in the rules, if people would just read them". And, I get that, but the rules are not easy to understand especially for someone just wanting to learn the basics of how dog shows work. Because you still have to navigate through pages and pages of how much space is required to hold a show, how to complete an application, how the catalog has to be done to learn anything about how dog shows work. And, even still, it's hard to understand.

This is why we make the graphics we do and why we create the content we do. So, those of you just trying to learn how about this crazy sport of ours works can find some concrete facts in a way that makes sense to you.

So, here is another cheat sheet for you. This one on AKC championship points.

We had a very successful trip to Lexington, KY earlier this summer for the Irish Setter Club of America, Inc.’s 50th Anniversary National Specialty! Unfortunately, our ad didn’t make it into the Memo to Members, but it’s too good to keep to ourselves! We took five setters, and our fabulous junior handler, Eleanor!

💕Eleanor and Vivian, CH La Veta Farms 3E’s What’s Your Dream CGC, earned First Place in the Open Junior Junior Showmanship class.

💜Georgia, Sunshine’s Ticket to Paradise, was Best of Opposite S*x Beginner Puppy under judge Dr. Don Sturz.

💚Fletcher, Sunshine’s Conspiracy Theory, CGC, made the cut in a large BPUP class.

💕 CH La Veta Farms 3E’s What’s Your Dream CGC, earned the 2022 ISCA New Member Award

This weekend, our beautiful Estelle was BOB for her first GCH Major! Thank you to Judge Linda Robey for this win, and for your lovely words about both of our girls! Eleanor and Vivian were SB for more GCH points with competition. At just 20 months, we look forward to a bright future for this girl! Thank you also to the Arkansas Kennel Club for putting on a lovely show!

This guy blew us out of the water this weekend by taking BOB from the Bred By Puppy Class at the St. Joseph Kennel Club show on Saturday under Judge Jamie Hubbard. Fletcher was shown by Eleanor to Winner’s Dog, then handed off to the talented junior Allie, who piloted Fletcher to BOB over six specials (including his mother!). (This is what happens when you enter three class entries and two specials, LOL!) Fletcher is from our Vivian x King 2022 litter. At 7 months, he has 10 points and one of his majors already. So excited to see what is in store for him!

Sweet Belle is still looking for her perfect fit!

Sweet Belle is still looking for her perfect fit!

So, as sometimes happens, we have an older puppy looking for a new family. Belle is from our Titusz x Scarlett 2022 Nashville Litter. She is 8.5 months old. Belle was placed with a sweet family with 3 children, and simply was not the right fit. Since coming back to us at the end of April, Belle has attended weekly obedience classes, and completed the necessary tasks to have her CGC title.

Belle would be a FANTASTIC rally or obedience dog. She loves to work, and is extremely handler focused. Please message me, or send an email to [email protected] with questions.

Belle will be placed on a strict spay agreement, and is not a candidate for a breeding program.

Did you know that we offer a Titling & Testing Incentive Program with all of our puppies? This means, even if you don't want to show your puppy in conformation, there are still PLENTY of things you can do with your dog, and we will reward you for it! Any puppy who completes classes, titles, or testing is eligible for rebates up to $300 over the life of the dog. (HINT, if you have a puppy from us, have completed a class or title, and haven't let us know....wellllllll, you're missing out!)

Congratulations to Johnny & Heidi (Sunshine's Ole Red, Titusz x Scarlett 2022 Nashville Litter) on their puppy class completion!

Just because a dog is AKC registered, doesn’t mean it has a good pedigree.

Just because you don’t want to compete in dog sports doesn’t mean you don’t want to buy a dog from lines who have competed. Those letters next to a dogs name for generations prove trainability, intelligence and adaptability, as well as, health testing for the entirety of the dogs lineage. There’s a reason military and police departments acquire their working retrievers from hunt test and field trial pedigrees.

Just because someone selling puppies says they are “health checked,” doesn’t mean they have OFA tested hips and elbows, genetic panels etc. their vets opinion of the health of their dog means nothing when it comes to breeding mentally and physically sound dogs.

Well bred dogs cost more up front, you’re paying for all the time and energy put into the parents, more so than the puppy itself. But, it is typically a “buy once, cry once,” situation. Well bred dogs typically are more willing to train, have far less mental/behavior issues and will cost you far less for the duration of their life.

Eleanor & Vivian had a great weekend at the UKC Midwest Classic!

Eleanor placed first in her juniors class all 6 shows!

This was Vivian's first show back from maternity leave, and while her coat leaves a lot to be desired (babies played heck with her feathers!), her body condition has never been better! She still moves and shows like a dream. She had no breed competition Friday, so was BOB for those two shows, and even in her "hairless" condition, snagged a Gundog Group 3! She was BOB two of the four shows with competition. So proud of you girls!

From The CC Vault: What is the Purpose and Use of Conformation Shows?

by Dr. Gerry G. Meisels
photo ©Lisa Croft-Elliott

Improving breeding stock was the innate reason for the creation of canine conformation shows as well as shows of numerous other domesticated animals. Improving anything must have a goal, and for breeders that goal is clearly to come as close as possible to the “ideal” dog as described in the standard, a dog that is outstandingly prepared for the job for which this breed was created, be that to flush or retrieve birds, pull carts, guard an estate, go to ground after vermin, run beside a horse-drawn carriage, or sit in the sleeve of a Chinese Emperor. The breed standards are the specifications that tell us what specific characteristics will make a dog most successful in its job. Identifying the dogs whose conformation comes closest to the standard should provide valuable input into the decisions of a carefully designed breeding program...continue reading here: http://caninechronicle.com/?p=255753
