Yearling prep is well underway for the thoroughbred boys - Adelaide Magic Millions will be here before we know it.
Lots of walking, then some walking, followed by a bit more walking, high quality feed, and a great farrier. Growing these colts physically and mentally at a steady controlled pace is so important. Regardless of whether they go to sales or stay on the farm, a good weanling prep - backed up by a solid yearling prep - gives them the confidence to be good equine citizens, wherever their futures take them. 🐎 🏆 🐎
Breeding season wouldn’t happen without our wonderful veterinarian, Dr Toby Ryan. We are eternally grateful for his advice and assistance, and he’s been kept busy scanning mares for us and our clients.
It is so important to regularly check the progress of a mare’s reproductive cycle when breeding - regardless of whether using live/fresh, chilled or frozen semen. Monitoring behavioural changes (teasing) as well as regular ultrasound scans to track not only the follicular development, but also the changing state of the uterus and cervix, gives a more accurate prediction of ovulation. This means we can time insemination to give the best chance of a pregnancy occurring.
As our first AI for this season, it was very rewarding to see a positive 14 day pregnancy scan for this mare today. Dr Toby also placed a caslick to help reduce the risk of pregnancy complications from faecal contamination (the conformation of this mare’s vulva predisposes her to these issues).
Spa day for one of our agisted race spellers - Chuck certainly seemed to smile as he appreciated the nice warm water wash bay 🧼 🐴 🫧 🚿
🥰 Huge thank you to young Ella for all her efforts in helping to keep this place running smoothly!
